Forum Post: Winter Plans?

I was wondering what the plan is for when winter sets in? It will be unlikely that protestor turnouts will be in such numbers once the cold and snow sets in, in the north. There is such tremendous energy and hope for this movement, I'd hate to see it falter. I assume a change in tactics will be needed. Any thoughts?

model and learn from the homeless. Its entirely possible to occupy through winter, it just requires organization and evolved tactics and lots of warm clothes.

Turn your protesting energy to volunteerism for the betterment of humanity. You'll work up a good sweat shoveling the snow from a disabled persons driveway.

[-] 1 points by AlchemicalGirl (15) 13 years ago

Why would you assume that protesters can't also be volunteers? And how does shoveling the snow from a disabled person's driveway create living-wage jobs, affordable health care, and stop corporate greed?

[-] 1 points by Coreupt (294) 13 years ago

I don't assume that you can't do both. Your post is asking what to do about the protests and I was suggesting that mass volunteerism will have a substantial effect on humanity and the public's perception of the protesters. The issues of jobs, health care and greed wont be solved by protesting but by action.

Technology is the impetus for the dawning of the new era. For the first time all of humanity can instantaneously communicate on a global scale. We can control our birth rate with the use of safe effective birth control. We have the resources to feed and house the world’s population. Most all human suffering is manmade or worsened by greed and lack of empathy. Technology has also given us the ability choose our destiny. We can continue the current trajectory: depletion of resources, growing inequalities and war. Or, we can choose a new way.

The path to enlightenment, equality, and sustenance is attainable with a united movement. Part of that movement is time bank. Time bank is a network of humanity. Organized on line. Completely transparent. All inclusive. Hour in. Hour out. That’s it. No person’s hour is more or less valuable than another.

A worldwide time bank can be started now. With enough participation it can catalyze the transition from the current corrupt monetary system to a society where money is irrelevant and each person is valued. Fear and greed will paralyze this movement. Hope and imagination can propel it.

Time is the Substance from which I am made. – Jorge Luis Borges

I agree with volunteering, and your ideal view of it. However, this still does not address the issues at hand. While volunteering is helpful and "feels good", it does not provide income, help pay bills, student loans, mortgages, or address other issues that OCW protesters take up (such as policy changes and Corporatocracy).

[-] 1 points by Coreupt (294) 13 years ago

Protesting does nothing to solve these problems either. The solution is the dissolution of capitalism. I am not foolish enough to think that this will happen overnight. But policy change is not likely, even with 99% of the population protesting, because money is power and power corrupts. I believe that time bank can be a transitionary tool that can help us overcome capitalism and its inevitable ills.

[-] 1 points by AlchemicalGirl (15) 13 years ago

Protesting, however, is a good start. It allows people to vent frustrations and grievances while coming together for common cause(s). I would not say protesting does nothing to solve problems. There is a laundry list of protests throughout history that have been the catalyst for change, for women's rights, minority rights, LGBT rights, suffrage, workers rights, and ridding dictators, to name a few... Will this happen overnight? Of course not, but policy change CAN happen, if we make it happen.

[-] 1 points by Coreupt (294) 13 years ago

Point taken, protesting has its place but action by a few "doers" (think Rosa Parks, Mother Theresa, Harriet Tubman...) has significant results.

[-] 1 points by AlchemicalGirl (15) 13 years ago

Yes, naturally. Protesting is an excellent start, but further steps need to be taken other than taking to the streets. The question is: What's next, when the snow flies and not so many people come out in the cold? There is a crucial next step to be taken. Participating in government is obvious, but with a lot of bright minds, I think we can do this in new and innovative ways. :-)

[-] 1 points by Coreupt (294) 13 years ago

So do I. Please start a time bank in your area and encourage others to join.
