Occupy Oakland: Take Back OGP

On October 25 of last year, the Oakland Commune at Oscar Grant Plaza was raided with enough brutal force to gain international attention. Since then, continuous state repression and police brutality have sought to divide Oakland and keep its residents from reclaiming public space in a time of local, national and global austerity.

The Oakland Commune served as a socio/political refuge for Oakland residents. It was open and free to all and provided a space where people could traverse race and class divides in order to share food, discussion and visions of a more just world. During this time, it was reported that crime within the beat that contained Oscar Grant Plaza went down 19 percent, which highlights the social efficacy of the community when allowed to come together and care for itself.

This Thursday October 25, Occupy Oakland will take back Oscar Grant Plaza with the intention of reclaiming the commons and the right of the people to organize in City Centers. This is a call out to all those who either experienced or were intrigued by the power of the Oakland Commune to come and contribute to the evening’s planned discussions on racism, patriarchy, state repression, and bridges to building a mass movement. A pot luck, community forum and general assembly are scheduled to begin at 4:00pm, followed by a march at 7:00pm. Films will be shown in the evening.

Come gather with us in the commons!

I hope this comes out good. I remember Oakland was the home of the Black Panther Party and its Survival Programs. It is important to have a Community Office and a stable location where people can connect up together in order to develop a strong sense of community.. Peter S. Romney says Russia is still Americas enemy, which goes to show that it has never been about Capitalism/Socialism, unless Libertarianism is really an extreme form of Marxism. America doesn't like competition. Yes the working class have to realise that their labour is a commodity like any other but not the big Pharmaneutical corporations. The legalisation of Marijuana could transform Mexico's economy for instance. The penalties in Mexico for the possession of a small amount of grass are Draconion but you can buy any Pharmaceutical drug across the counter without a prescription.

Gotcha. How'd you go in the hurricane?

You're probing me, l'm not sure if I like that. I didn't know they were going to say I live in New York so now this might be the right time to place to my cards on the the table and make a clean breast of things and freely admit that I may not actually live in New York just to get it off my chest. Wow, I feel so much better now.

Probing? Just showing some concern is all.

Glad you feel so much better now.

Ok, thanks, but what has this all got to do with what I said abiut Romney etc?

Romney says what he thinks people want to hear.

I wouldn't be taking him seriously at all. He's a schmuck.

Has there been any effort this time around to work with sympathetic members of the police department or with the City of Oakland?

I know that may come across as naive, but it is far from it. This is coming from the perspective of realism and survival. I know it is difficult to bridge that divide, especially in Oakland now, but I think it is critically important. Local Gov't will be what sustains us in the future as Gov't at the Federal level sinks further and further into illegitimacy.

If this is just a stunt, I'm not interested because I believe it will be counter productive. We already made statements of protest last year. We need to go beyond that and look into a sustainable movement that makes further progress rather than fights over the symbols of yesterday and yet takes no new ground.

If work has been put into sustaining an occupation which will transform Oakland, I'm all for it - as would be most of the rest of Oakland.
