Cops (especially NYC cops) are f'ed over more then anybody. They've got to put their lives on the line every day and deal with a lot of bull. You know how much the average salary of a NYC cop is? $38,000/year. Lets hope they don't have a big family...
These cops should not be suppressing these protesters, they should be embracing their cause.
These cops should be protesting with us!
I propose we embrace the police and let them know that they have a spot in our 'revolution'. They will not be left behind, and we will fight for their rights and equality as much as we will fight for our own.
Next time you have a run in with the cops on Wall Street, present them with a flower and let them know that we are the 99%, join us.
The cops are loving this. You know how much OT they are getting off of OWS?

Ultimately they will have to become part of the 99%, or face the fact that their job serves the 1% by providing the brute force to keep us quiet and under control.
Cops have families too - we need to appeal to them about this as a matter of the future of their children (i.e., generations of Americans).
The NY cops are professionals. They will do their job. Don't involve them....and....be respectful.
Cops unfortunately end up with an us/them attitude pretty quickly due to the constant barrage of negative human activity they have to deal with. I think many don't really see civilians as good people, but as crimes that haven't happened yet. I'm so glad you all continue to treat them as people, and remain non violent and non abusive. I have started to suspect the cops are being ordered to a harder line, though. Be prepared for that because it will continue to get worse. Do not try to give them things, but do practice worse case scenarios with your friends so that under stress you can react appropriately. I would love to see groups of protesters chanting the first amendment! Imagine the power of that in a video for all the world to see, including those who want to smear the movement.
In the times square video, watch the faces of the guys on horseback. They read as pretty ambivalent to me...
Cops are a part of the 99% but they are brainwashed...I have family in the nypd & it's like they are on the job 24/7...Sickening, They eat, shit & sleep just like everyone else..The badge gives them heart, they now meet people with more heart! "Occupy Wall Street"
The institution of the police is not a friend to OWS. That doesn't mean individual police officers are not sympathetic, but the police are the economic rulers' front line. Always have been and always will be. It's part of the job. We shouldn't provoke or antagonize the police, but at the end of the day, they will oppose OWS in service to the rich and powerful. As OWS grows, this will become clear. We can be friendly, but ultimately, the police are not our friends.
You are mistaken. Starting salary is $44,754 reaching $90,829 after 51/2 years. That's WITHOUT overtime. http://www.nypdrecruit.com/benefits-salary/overview
The love police ;)

Actually, I think that is their starting salary.
Cops are part of the 99% too.
Great post!
Please remember to give thoughtful consideration to any interaction you have with police officers. They don't want to be out there policing your actions anymore than you want them out there doing so. Like it or not, agree or not, they have a job to do and if that means arresting someone for violating a written statute - and you happen to be that person who is in violation - don't resist and draw unnecessary attention to thoughtless actions that indicate the OWS is in any way some sort of violent revolt against "the man".
And what of the protesters in NYC that got the thoughtful consideration of a baton to the back, a punch to the face or a good old-fashioned macing? Moreover, what of the people of color who are consistently and unfairly harassed by the cops on a daily basis? Have they not given enough 'thoughtful consideration' to the police in their interaction?
Firstly, your second point is moot. It has nothing to do with what I was saying, which is - for the sake of the OWS movement, be mindful of how you react to the police because violence will discredit the movement.
As far as the "baton to the back" and whatnot, it is naive (at best) to think that all of the police actions at OWS has been rogue and without provocation. I was not there to see the entire interaction between an OWS member and the police that led to any violent reaction from police. Don't divert the conversation away from keeping the OWS peaceful by just spouting things like "baton to the back" without proving it was not provoked in any way... that, like the violence, discredits the movement.
I saw several videos of police interaction where OWSers acted in a very provocative fashion. It doesn't help the cause. At the Occupy Columbia event we had this past Saturday, there were several kind interactions between citizens and police -- no violence, no arrests - lots of open dialogue.
Focus tangibly on the constitution rather than the superficial distractions. The constitution is what government must operate under. Focus on government, because cops are of government, if you seek to control that which it operates under, and do so lawfully, they must support you.-----
However, you must outwardly cite a law you seek to see upheld while invoking the right to uphold it. In this case it is your first constitutional right, to have congress convene delegates to propose amendments to the constitution.
A sign would read-"Article V convention under the US constitution NOW!
Let us work to keep these thread at the top and displace the false with the real.

Opposing unity that seeks to use the constitution to defend the constitution is not constitutional and supports treasonous usurpation.
You can embrace them all you want, but they will continue to resist your support.
Police are not all bad people, nor are many making it rich off their jobs. However, as long as they are enforcing laws crafted to serve the rich they themselves are beyond the pale. And in order for them to stop enforcing laws that serve the rich they would have to quit being police officers. At that point they can be embraced, as they would no longer be enemies of the 99%.
How many OWSers have to be beaten, run over and maced by the police for folks to understand this?
$38k to be a cop in NYC? They should be leading this movement......bet the commissioner makes a very generous 6 digits a year.

You should check the main sources first and foremost.

Well thats a little better.
Peace Officers are part of the 99%! Embrace them by ALL means
Embrace them, absolutely. I mean, not literally, but then again a hug can go a long way.
But yes, talk in a civilized way to cops who are just hanging around. Ask what they think of the movement on a personal level, develop a dialog.
Having a level head and peaceful is always the best route.
always have an escape route
