Happy Birthday Occupy! Rolling Jubilee abolishes $3.85m in Corinthian Colleges students' loan debt

Posted 10 years ago on Sept. 17, 2014, 10:25 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt
Tags: RollingJubilee

Please read and share this wonderful news about the Rolling Jubilee as reported in the Guardian. Then click here for a brief history of the Rolling Jubilee and the activist-tactic of buying and forgiving debt.

Over the last few days, over 2,700 Everest College students woke up to find that someone had paid off their private student debt.

This was no act of goodwill by the government, which is currently suing Everest parent Corinthian Colleges for its predatory lending practices. Nor is it a gift from Everest itself, which is expected to shutter its doors and possibly leave 72,000 students out of their time and tuition.

Instead, the disappearing student loan debt is the second major piece of financial activism by a group of Occupy Wall street activists.

To inspire Americans with student debt to unionize, the Rolling Jubilee Fund, a project of Strike Debt, has purchased and abolished a portfolio of private student loans issued to Everest students.

Strike Debt is also launching a new initiative – The Debt Collective, which will “create a platform for organization, advocacy and resistance by debtors”.

“Solutions are not going to happen if we just wait for Congress to do it,” says Thomas Gokey, one of the organizers “We need a social movement. We need debtors to unite to exert collective power.”

The portfolio was valued at – to be exact – $3,856,866.11 in student debt.

In the vast scheme of things, $3.8m is barely a drop in the bucket as the student debt owed by Americans has now surpassed $1tn.

The gesture, however, is meant to be symbolic as it proves that debt can be conquered – and at a discount. Rolling Jubilee bought the $3.8m worth of student loans for a total of $106,709.48 in cash. That’s about 3¢ for $1 of student debt.

“The Rolling Jubilee doesn’t actually solve the problem. The Rolling Jubilee is a tactic and a valuable one because it exposes how debt operates,” says Gokey.

“It punches a hole through the morality of debt, through this idea that you owe X amount of dollars that the 1% says you owe. In reality, that debt is worth significantly less. The 1% is selling it to each other at bargain-based prices. You don’t actually owe that.”

The 1% in this scenario are the companies issuing private student loans and the debt buyers, who often purchase student loan portfolios like the one purchased by the Rolling Jubilee.

Awesome! The people can do what the government won't!

Debt forgiveness is an ancient concept. Governments from thousands of years ago understood it's necessity. Today, sadly, they just want to continue to exploit and extract.

''#ScotlandDecides against monetising its wind, wave, hydro, oil + a resource backed 'Scotcoin' & a Public Banking Option! So Banksters Win!'' = my last tweet on the matter & the one prior to that was :

''As #ScotlandDecides against #scottishindependence in the #indyref - it seems Tony BLiar had you scared as per his threat - https://twitter.com/haysham/status/510093011293052928/photo/1 !''

"If what started in Scotland this late summer is not to disappear by midwinter, it is its spirit that has to be nurtured and replenished. Simply defined, that spirit was the determination to ask people a profound, even existential question: not to trap them in the weeds of this tax cut or that benefit change, but to ask them what kind of society they want to be. Such questions need not be only about identity. Sometimes, as perhaps in Scotland, they can be about both identity and the desire to live under a different, more just economic system. If this extraordinary moment is to last, that’s what we have to remember: that if you want people to come up with the biggest answers, you have to trust them with the biggest questions."

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/sep/19/scotland-glorious-revolution-westminster-anoraks-debate

I only wish the global left were strong enough to prevent the debt in the first place. I fear that the Scots will be joining England and the U.S. in the near future in indebting their students. Strike debt is a great thing, but hell, we have to create a society where debt is not necessary for survival, in the first place.

[-] 4 points by ShadzSixtySix (1936) 10 years ago

Money is like inches and ounces - an abstract, arbitrary - yet commonly accepted metric for measuring 'wealth' but it is not 'wealth' per se. Until ''the global left'' have clarified their critique of 'money' itself - and therefore by extension 'debt' .. then we will always be playing catch up and the initiative will remain with The Banksters & their lackeys in the mainstream political parties and media in 'USUK' etc.

Thanx for your link, which I'd read in my hard copy of The Guardian and in compliment .. I will append and recommend these two excellent articles by Ellen Brown ; the very recent first re. 'Public Banking' and Scotland and the second, an older eye opening piece from a year after OWS' start :

Scotland had a unique opportunity to strike a blow at Banksters for The 99%. Sadly, they let 'fear' rule.

"...a stunning 35 percent to 40 percent of everything we buy goes to interest. This interest goes to bankers, financiers, and bondholders, who take a 35 percent to 40 percent cut of our GDP. That helps explain how wealth is systematically transferred from Main Street to Wall Street. The rich get progressively richer at the expense of the poor, not just because of "Wall Street greed," but because of the inexorable mathematics of our private banking system."

Sigh. Everyone needs to understand that. End debt slavery now!

"You don’t have to listen to my political point of view. But it’s not that I’m not voting out of apathy. I’m not voting out of absolute indifference and weariness and exhaustion from the lies, treachery, deceit of the political class that has been going on for generations now and which has now reached fever pitch, where we have a disenfranchised, disillusioned, despondent underclass that are not being represented by that political system. So, voting for it is tacit complicity with that system, and that’s not something I’m offering up."

[-] 5 points by elf3 (4203) 10 years ago

No because anyone who regularly goes to vote ( like me) deserves to have more than the lesser of two evils. Democrats are so disjointed giving corporations and minorities a dual reach around...they can probably do their own now. Btw republicans have started doing the same thing knowing minorities will become the majority. Action speaks louder than words, but you know what speaks even louder? Silence, complete, pc , don't step on any toes or make any waves, maintain status quo, I need campaign money, and votes , and to advance my political pull so I can clear the big bucks for myself silence Even worse they think we are too dumb to realize when they say one thing and do another ...or when they ignore an entire country of working class people mired in struggle and secretly promote the trans pacific partnership job killer and do nothing to reign in outsourcing, monopolies , or mergers or war profiteering. And when we all sink into poverty as our wages stagnate yet another year they continue to promise the working class alone will continue to fund safety nets for the inner city, the unemployed and downtrodden, highways and roads, corpirate giveaways, and oh yeah themselves. Federal pension anyone? And dont forget they have to keep their government crony workers fat too. Contract anyone/ government position? Commence speeches on importance of business and the business community and how tax breaks to companies create more jobs. Because nothing spells progressive like - trickldown...? Huh?...And how corpirations are going to get more money billions in fact to build Cabrini Green Housing (that one is for all you lucky inner city kids) yay communist block housing and more service sector jobs to supplement those wonderous living quarters. (Who needs upward mobility when you have all this!)They have ignored the fact that helping the poor doesn't mean shit when the people who pay taxes to do that, are treading water and living paycheck to paycheck not sure if they will get downsized one month to the next. They know this. They ignore us because if they acknowledge it instead of dancing around it every way possible...then they might have to grow the balls and speak about it, and actually do something...ALL politicians are but a shareholding for corpirations...who all want a return payout and if they don't get it they pull their funds. You see they aren't thinking about what happens when the working class sinks and can't hold up the country anymore.politicians will be taken care of...they have a life raft. Maybe politicians need to know what its like to live now on a working class income never accumulating enough to build upon or grow it or to be poor not having any way forward from the service sector to become self reliant and both poor and middleclass never knowing what the instability of a trickldown corporate lick boot economy will bring...!!!

The burden is now on the GOP to deliver the goods. Last time around, it had the exclusive control of both Houses of Congress and the Presidency and that did not help much (9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq, Stasi state, tax cuts for the eelites, piling on of national debt, financial scams, Great Recession).

Of course, the donkeys (or were they actually asses? - frankly I love horses but not so much into distinguishing between mules, asses, donkeys, etc. They may as well all be Santa's reindeer. Or are they actually elks? :/ ) were given the same privilege and that did not help much (financial criminals precipating the Great Recession got their balance sheets puffed up by the government; jail was reserved for the little people).

This time it will be different again!

ahh trust in the Monarchy eh?

[-] 1 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

There is no Monarchy to trust. There are just good age-old time-tested teachings to follow. The belief in the Monarchy helped preserve the knowledge and wisdom of the ancient Greeks and Romans (the Islamic world also preserved much of that) and pulled the West out of the Dark Ages to enter the glorious Renaissance. Beliefs had real world-altering effects regardless of whether Jesus is Son of God, whether God exists, etc.

I thank the Church and the Islamic world for having preserved history and ancient learnings so if I accord respect to ancient teachings, you will understand why. God is great or Allahu Akbar are both fine with me even if there may be nothing to God or Allah. Truths are eternal and even misplaced faith can be correct at least sometimes.

right on man. i do think that the understanding of money is one of our basic problems. i was at the march yesterday - nyc is announcing a big green initiative to be accomplished by 2025 (oops i found out it's 2050 - what's the hurry) or some such date. the reason we have to g"go slow" is the "we don't have the money!" many at the march feel that way and too many here do also. the fed should "rpint" the money just like they did to give to the banks and we should attack climate change like we did ww2. it would put people to work and drive down the use of fossil fuels - we could then keep them in the ground for the future - we will need them in the future - i am sure of it.

You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all.” ― Mario Savio

Sounds like a good reason to have compulsory voting.

Inequality will be in the world's limelight, now that Ebola has wedded Dallas, Texas, U.S.A. to Liberia's hot zone. We will soon see if the world's 1% can isolate themselves from the 99% as a decades old "poor Black African" disease spreads. Will skin colors matter? Will ethnic origin make a difference? Will the high positive balance in the bank account save the 1%? Have the 1% built BSL-4 containment facilities to live in?

[-] 4 points by Revolutionary (311) 9 years ago

We are fighting with the enemy of the humanity who is very less intelligent but extremely powerful which is like a toddler carrying nuclear weapons/their control == what I mean to say is that this toddler can be controlled but we need patience to use our wits .we can change strategy , we can merge strategies , we can superimpose plans to achieve our good objectives to save the humanity from capitalism and destruction. And ablve all we must never feel defeated rather the evil is afraid of us.

[-] 4 points by grapes (5232) 9 years ago

The enemy is afraid of us because it can never ever build enough of the so-called "BSL-4 Containment Facilities" to live in. The master is always chained to his slaves. Those who built the system know how to or are foolish enough to destroy the system. There is no fool-proof system because fools or otherwise anything that can happen will happen in due time. The only escape is to change the "potential energy barrier" configuration.

"We all need a New Politics that is holistic and fuses The Political with the Ethical, Moral, Spiritual and Environmental"

Shadz has that right. Nice to see you Revolutionary. Will humans rise to the occasion and fight back en masse against the few greedy grubbers? Will our economic system put people over profits? These are momentous times.

In a watershed moment in America, for the first time, more than 50% of America's schoolchildren live in poverty.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/16/southern-education-foundation-children-poverty_n_6489970.html

That statistic brought a tear to my eye this morning. The absolute abject failure of our capitalistic economic system is evident right there in that number.

All this while 85 human beings have as much wealth as the bottom half of earth's population or 3.5 billion people

The whole humanity is looking forward very earnestly towards the people of USA to save them from the contemporary governance system and the capitalism .Only the American people can do it.Then then the future generation would dream of being a part of you -of the revolution. Your first two lines are the way out to stop the one percent to control the 99percent who use the instrument of control ie money to control the people.Let me here add a joke about the unnecessary importance that the money the instrument of control has been given as under:Descartes once said something like 'I think therefore I exist' I say for the sake of joking 'I do not have money therefore I do not exist'.Let me directly add thay the use of the contemporary money is a human rights violation.

Peace and Solidarity to you and yours. May we find a way out of the morass soon so our children and grandchildren can live lives with love and generosity and peace and hope.

World revolution is possible and we have to make it imminent through scientific methods to involve people in the process. We need a modern revolution using minds not necessarily mouths for example we have to prove it mathematically that how much imminent it is.that is how quickly can we transfer our good ideas and methods to the people. We have to go step by step better system by system.we can make simulation of revolution than coming on the roads.

[-] 4 points by beautifulworld (23824) 8 years ago

The question is: How do we get people to care? When they are in the muck of what society tells them, brainwashed by MSM? When our economic system keeps so many people down?

Did you know that Cuba has produced a vaccine for cancer?

They've had it for years. I can only think that the greed and drive for profit in our capitalistic healthcare system prevented it from coming here.

To simulate the revolution one should take the assumption that all types of resources are at your disposal rather can be controlled or are at the disposal of the say thinker/system which convenes the revolution. Resources can be classified in any way convenient to the thinker(to think clearly)/system necessary for the initiation, propagation and culmination of the revolution. Our humane philosophy(which has always to be updated) shall drive the peoples revolution. What is and what has been happening so far is that the people have been reduced to animal like responses/thinking while at the same time they are being fed that they are treated as human beings or respond really freely. We have to proceed scientifically, classifying resources and classifying the attributes of the people needed for all steps of revolution—it is like running a parallel government which cannot be seen to be like that rather it shall be labeled as a parallel government by the 1% who control and enjoy resources directly or indirectly because we may have rather will have to use the visible or invisible things to replace the use of money in our circles or outside! India is attempting to kill me through radiation and slow poison and sometimes the police threatens to kill me through a roadside bomb or government hired hooligans therefore my chances to contribute to the simulation of the world revolution are lesser.

[-] 3 points by beautifulworld (23824) 8 years ago

Bernie Sanders is organizing such phone calls as you speak of below. I, personally, was on a phone call with 500 supporters all for the political revolution. And, I was invited to a conference call which I couldn't make but which had 10,000 revolutionaries supporting Bernie's platform to control Wall Street, break up the banks, institute real healthcare for all, free education, etc. 10,000 revolutionaries on the phone with Bernie at the same time!!

There is an awakening in this country right now. The establishment may still push their way to victory, of course, but they do so at their peril. And, we sit this one out at our peril. I encourage all lefties to get involved with Bernie's campaign. We don't have much time.

It's always nice to hear from you, revolutionary! Great ideas.

The delay is a very sorry state of affairs created by India by exposing me to intense radiations from radioactive sources put by India in order to kill me! Now India threatens to kill me in darkness! However, today I discovered perhaps the first sentence of my article' how to start a beautiful world' as follows: It is not the revolution as history has witnessed but a 'Revolutionary Rehabilitation Program' for all the people (including the 1%who control the present system--they should not get disappointed).we shall rehabilitate Mr. Bill Gates too who sounds too philanthropic--i am 100% sure he shall never refuse the offer!!!!!!). Moreover, talking to thousands of people is nice but we need to have at least three trustworthy friends to build the the pyramid of friends made up of triangular shapes(which are inside a big triangle rather make a big one, corners of inside triangles represent people) with the base called as G zero, followed by G one,G two etc where each stage has different functions to perform but upper stages have special selection processes which could be continuous. We have got Basic Pyramid and other Pyramids for special functions all (of whose tips) touching the top tip.I need more time to write it fully which consists of few pages. What we have to remember is that things are easy but people do not know!or believe in that the things could be so easy.

[-] 3 points by beautifulworld (23824) 8 years ago

Hmmm. Well, I think a simulation is a place to start. Start setting up the world the way you want it to be. Work outside of the establishment structures especially with regard to the economy and the political system. It will take a long time. Bernie Sanders, though running as a Democrat is clearly not your average Democrat and hence is a good example of trying to take back the resources for the people. He is not an establishment candidate and that is why he is getting basically zero tv coverage although millions of Americans are following him.

[-] 4 points by Revolutionary (311) 8 years ago

We can use many methods to change the setup of the governance but first the easier ones which need lesser effort, naturally but there is a threshold of effort we must make in order to save the humanity from destruction. What we need initially is the bond of friendship and sympathy between people say a manageable group of 5 or six at a time who are already familiar with each other daily biding good morning/evening or meeting or discussing. The beauty lies in the idea that each one is the convener of his/her personal group who invites more people to his group on phone or other social media to appreciate and to inculcate the humane values in them. Each of the invitee shall be requested to convene such a group of his her friends. We may or may not start to say good morning revolution as one chooses to.Eventually the 1% shall beg us and say "a simulation is a place to start and just do it"! Things are easy but complicated.I mean it is very easy to over throw the present system of governance!I shall come up with a brief within this week,I hope so.

[-] 2 points by beautifulworld (23824) 8 years ago

Thanks for your reply, above, revolutionary. India has its problems, as does America. It is up to the people to bring the necessary change and yes, I agree, having trustworthy friends is an important early step in making change. Good luck you you.

[-] 2 points by beautifulworld (23824) 8 years ago

I think you are right, revolutionary. The revolution we need is one of the heart and mind. It must start between us human beings. Changing the way all humans think and see the world away from one of fear and greed and toward love and generosity is how this revolution blossoms. Working outside the system to bring this about is primary, then working within the system to change the system will follow after.

[-] 3 points by Revolutionary (311) 8 years ago

Those 85 are mass murderers. They are reposible for millions of deaths. But it's not just them. At the very least, it's the 1% of each nation and to some degree, the world as a whole. The masses are also partly to blame for increasing the world population with no regard whatsoever for sustainability or environmental impact.

''Those on the streets around Wall Street are the physical embodiment of hope. They know that hope has a cost, that it is not easy or comfortable, that it requires self-sacrifice and discomfort and finally faith. They sleep on concrete every night. Their clothes are soiled. They have eaten more bagels and peanut butter than they ever thought possible. They have tasted fear, been beaten, gone to jail, been blinded by pepper spray, cried, hugged each other, laughed, sung, talked too long in general assemblies, seen their chants drift upward to the office towers above them, wondered if it is worth it, if anyone cares, if they will win. But as long as they remain steadfast they point the way out of the corporate labyrinth. This is what it means to be alive. They are the best among us.'' From :

StrikeDebt Organizing kit!!

http://strikedebt.org/Strike-Debt-Organizing-Kit.pdf

We're NOT done!!

In the immediate future, we would like to put two related events on your radar. We are quite certain they will take Strike Debt to a new level of national visibility, and that they will mobilize individuals and communities far outside of our current orbit.

-On November 15th, Strike Debt New York held The People's Bailout Telethon, a multimedia variety show featuring headline acts such as Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel, Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead, comedian Janeane Garofalo, and Strike Debt allies such as Occupy Faith, Occupy our Homes, and Healthcare for the 99%. The telethon launched the Rolling Jubilee, a project to purchase and cancel bundles of anonymous debt at pennies on the dollar. At the time of writing, we have raised almost $300,000, enough funds to abolish six million dollars worth of debt. Rolling Jubilee has the dual capacity to expose the debt collection system and eliminate large quantities of debt. The event was broadcast and can viewed on the Rolling Jubilee website.

-On December 16th, Strike Debt New York will hold a Winter’s Jubilee Holiday Party and Open House for community members to learn more about Strike Debt, meet New York members and Jubilate! If you are in region during this period, we encourage you to come by.

-On January 21st --Martin Luther King Day—Strike Debt will hold a National Visioning Session envision to imagine an economy that works for the 99%--the People's Reconstruction.

And some background

A history of Debt resistance

The failure to resolve the bankster strangle hold on students/homeowners/workers with ever more debt/indentured servitude is an illustration of the power fin corps have over our elected leaders, & reflects our (the people) ignorance, inaction, complacency, & apathy.

This is why we must increase our efforts to educate (spreading, current info), inspire (updates/suggestions on action) & coalesce with like minded organizations.

Absolutely not gratuitous attacks, & partisan purity policing.

That is counter productive.

Right? Are you with us?

Student Debt has a terrible warping effect on the Youth of our Nation, and therefore the Future of our Nation.Student Debt makes real the Vision of Corporations for our Future-no person who is not from a rich family may pursue a career in any field other than applied science, technology, engineering, medical or finance. That's about it.Corporations can make the most money off of these.Entry level jobs in these fields will pay enough to enable students to start paying their debts. Those whose parents still have a house can avoid grinding poverty for awhile by Living at Home. The Arts, sciences like anthropology, legal and many other fields will go begging because the entry level jobs in fields such as those don't pay enough to live on even without giant loan payments.WHO the FUCK are they to decide what our Young People do with their lives? FREEDOM means Young People decide that for themselves.Wake-ee! Wake-ee! Eggs n' Bak-ee! Young People-Your Freedom to Run your own LIFE has been STOLEN!

Debt is rooted in interest and is the m.o. of banksters everywhere throughout human societies. Here's a wee peek into other possibilities for The 99% in the U$A & everywhere :

It is all simpler than it looks but Banktsers and their fawning lackeys like to try to flummox us with faux complexity. Young and old - The 99% have got to take interest in this 'business of money and banking'.

''The millennial generation has seen up-close and personal how libertarian economics and unregulated capitalism have brought our nation's economy to its knees.

''Take the student loan debt crisis for example.

''Right now, the United States' outstanding student loan debt stands at more than $1.18 trillion. More than 40 million Americans hold student loan debt, a number "greater than the entire population of Canada, Poland, North Korea, Australia and more than 200 other countries."

''The average debt for a 25-year-old American has risen a staggering 91 percent during the past decade, and most of that is student loan debt.

''Student loan debt exceeds both credit card and auto loan debt in the US, and the average college debt per person is over $23,000.

''That debt is also hurting the overall economy.'' - from :

Free public college, & student debt relief will help millions of decent hard working americans.

http://www.pressherald.com/2014/10/12/g-i-bill-started-the-steady-march-to-college-for-all/

"During the 1960s and ’70s, there was a psychological shift toward imagining that any American should be able to go to college, Thelin said.

But tuition started to increase significantly in the 1980s and ’90s, leading to new pressure on the federal government’s student loan program. The volume of student loans ballooned in the 1990s, when Congress increased loan limits, introduced unsubsidized loans, and increased access to include more middle-class families. Borrowing increased by almost $10 billion from 1992-93 to 1994-95, nearly a two-thirds increase in just two years."

(hmm, coinciding with civil rights?)

A new gi bill is acceptable.

Perhaps you could tell us which of McCain's or Romney's plans you prefered to Obama's actions, or if you would rather tell us how you saw Stein winning? explain that, give us any clue that you live in the real world and are not insane.

Tuition vs. Median Income over time:

This chart shows in-state and out-of-state tuition at public colleges vs. median income over time. Honestly, the tuition amounts seem low to me and it's too bad it doesn't include private colleges as well. But, it is a useful tool. Basically, median income has hardly budged while tuition has doubled. I think, if you look at private schools it has much more than doubled since 1987.

Since I’ve put off grad school primarily for this reason, I’m only looking at my student loan debt for the next seven-ish years. My heart breaks for those who don’t see an end.

''Fortunately, activists on behalf of students believe that we all deserve to see an end. In a radical twist, these activists believe that our lives are worth more than any debt. So they’re doing what Wall Street and the government can’t seem to figure out — they’re cancelling student loan debt.'' from :

''Initiatives like the Rolling Jubilee are meant to inspire and enlighten by making us question the system of debt. The goal is that the collective power of debtors becomes a force to be reckoned with — a force that demands greater economic equality. When his abilities are assessed more specifically, it’s even worse. His administration’s approval ratings for handling the economy, foreign policy and immigration are all significantly lower. As November’s midterm elections approach, Democratic candidates in tight races are running away from him. Most Americans have not felt the country has been moving in the right direction since he came to power; most still think they are in a recession.'' from :

Re. the 'Compound Interest Equation' above - you're right .. 'n' is obviated if it is assumed that n = 1 and thus leaving :

  • A = P x (1 + r) to the power 't'

Tho' this is a more elegant equation, it is nevertheless also true that interest is compounded many more times than once a year and banks calculate & 'compound' interest on a daily basis - especially on loans and debt !!! Now just imagine that 'n' = 365 Matt !!! I am sure that there are some serious implications to that !! My mind boggles a li'l at the thought of it AND at how we speak so little about 'Interest & Jubilee' !

Odious Debt & Onerous Interest that is Compounded by Banksters and their lackeys is the core issue - as I tried to explain via the 'Compound Interest Equation' farther up this thread !!! You seem to claim to understand it but I'm not at all sure that you do !! Please re-read this sub-thread, from your fist reply to me ^up there^ - it won't take long and it will be edifying - I promise.

From your link, I excerpt ... “Democrats are looking to energize students heading into the fall elections by reducing the interest they pay on students’ loans. … Republicans are resisting because Democrats would use a tax on the most affluent to pay for it,” Humphrey School of Public Affairs political science professor Larry Jacobs told the Minnesota Daily last week.

''Both sides of the political spectrum are behaving in a highly predictable way, as Jacobs explained. Political inaction often results from a lack of compromise between parties.''

What a total fkn crock o' shit !!! The ''political spectrum'' does NOT have just two sides 4 fux sake !! Well perhaps it does - but ONLY to the Duopoly Deluded ! Your man Oblahblah has been in office for 6 years already, so as I asked you further up the thread - just remind me what he's done for 'Students & Debt' or is he just too busy consolidating generational conflicts in the name of Hegemony and so called 'National Security' ? IF it is the later .. which countries' ''National Security'' is really under primary concern here ?!

Your problem is that, in the main .. I look at your links & I mostly see 'conservative acquiescence to the stautus quo' but with only a little added tinkering. People are disillusioned with the 'same old ; same old polytricks' - while avaricious, corpulent Banksters and larcenous Corporate Warmongers laugh at us all.

So is it really any damn wonder why people tune out, get angry and then because they are mislead and misdirected - not to mention, miseducated - that they then turn inwards and start to try to blame and so hate their fellow citizens ? Sad shit. Here, read this by the ever insightful Gary Younge & try not to weep

I'll end this overly long response to your b-s, by quoting the very last paragraph of your link : ''Heading into this fall’s elections, we would like to hear from candidates — specifically Sen. Al Franken and his Republican challenger, Mike McFadden — on how they would aim to cut through these deadlocks in Washington to make some real changes.'' These bastards won't change a fkn thing. They are owned !

"Colleges Win, Student Borrowers Lose In Obama Administration Absolution"

"The U.S. Department of Education is turning its back on at least 1,000 borrowers in favor of shielding their former colleges from potentially crippling sanctions that would have resulted from high rates of default on federal student loans."

Enough with the excuses, Obama and Democrats. It's easy to do nothing and keep pointing the finger.

''Enough with the excuses, Obama and Democrats. It's easy to do nothing and keep pointing the finger.'' Ditto bw and please further consider :

'' As if aging in America isn’t hard enough these days, a new government report has uncovered that seniors are facing yet another barrier to a secure retirement: their student debt. Once thought to be a young person’s issue, new data released by the Government Accountability Office shows that older Americans are also finding themselves buried under the weight of their student loans. The data helps paint a much larger picture of the overall economic insecurity that too many of our country’s seniors face every day

''The price of an education is quickly becoming too heavy a burden for far too many people, and it’s a burden that’s staying with them forever. College debt looms large as the most difficult debt to get rid of, and these numbers paint a startling picture of exactly how big a toll it’s taking on people as they age. For many, student debt is following them from the cradle to the grave – they’re condemned to a lifetime of payments that stagnant wages and mounting economic insecurity make it nearly impossible to manage.

''That threat puts all of us in jeopardy. It endangers an already fragile economic recovery, and it exacerbates the financial vulnerability of people who have worked all of their lives to provide for themselves and their families.

''If our economy doesn’t work for students, and it doesn’t work for workers, and it definitely doesn’t work for seniors, you have to wonder, is it time to try a different approach?''

Thanx for your strong 'Huff.Po' Link & I recommend any and all readers here to read it. Solidarity bw.

Agreed, The foot dragging by the so called peoples representatives is outrageous.

This all illustrates how important grassroots efforts are in retaking the corp owned pols/gov to serve the people.

Fighting for free public college for all will require putting aside the distraction of partisan flame wars/finger pointing. You are right.

From the street we demand free public college, & we will continue to support all political efforts regardless of party affiliation, we will urge replacing any & all representatives (all parties) against progress on this goal.

Solidarity.

Wow...great message - will the public get to hear it? Lately I'm amazed at how many people have become locked in to this system we have now. They are so tightly in it they don't even want to hear there might be another way because " wha whomp" if you even approach it they actually get mad. You are seen as crazy. Yes my own family has argued with me to shut up about politics because " that is cynical and negative" even positive stories like this because they are so resistant to the idea people could have an affect or that it could really change. They literally shut the door on any conversation about politics or world issues as though it is a disease I'm trying to spread or something icky they can't stand to think about. I couldn't even tell them a story like this. Same goes with coworkers or even discussing it publicly with my husband. People look at you like you are the schizophrenic that walked into a room pacing back and forth. Not like I'm loud or forcing it down any throats and I only bring it up when I sense a doorway open like if they complain about taxes or talk about who they are going to vote for...(sadly these people vote) but other than their sports team like mentality ...it's off limits a black box not to be opened or a bad childhood they want to forget. They are literally and figuratively consumed with operating within the bounds of the system we have ...and are resistant to any thought they don't have to play with the rules as they are. For people so accustomed to the rules as they are ...they have grown to depend on the consistency and to change them would for them be like changing the rules of football. They have learned the game and they don't want to learn a new one.

http://youarenotsosmart.com/2010/05/26/the-perils-of-introspection/

"Freedom is the enemy of synthetic happiness. In a Harvard photography course, a sample of students were given the choice to keep one of the two pictures that they developed; half of these students were given the chance to reverse their choice, while the other half was given only one chance. As it turns out, the students with a reversible choice were much less satisfied than students that had to make a single decision. Simply put, our psychological immune system works best when we are totally stuck"

Subjects that got to choose their poster later reported disatisfaction subjects that were told which one they had to choose invented reasons they were satisfied. So not only do we fool ourselves into believing the choices weren't being constricted or manipulated we convince ourselves we are happy with the reality we " chose" or believe we chose. This is bad stuff and explains a lot about apathy and our society accepting status quo. So I guess if we look at the various ways in our lives we do this we all do to some extent. A painful examination...not everyone is willing to subject themselves to pain. Nor will they let us. So many layers to our problem.

Add to that corporations and government are using psychological warfare on the public and workers ...which should be illegal.

[-] 3 points by elf3 (4203) 10 years ago

Also apparently members of this protest lack the capacity to fool ourselves into satisfaction...plus we see that the choices are being constricted and even if it brings unhappiness or failure ...we still want the choice and believe they exist beyond the scope of what is on the surface...in that we don't feel totally trapped because another world is possible so we don't lie to ourselves to brighten the reality we live in.

i cannot stand by deception

[-] 3 points by elf3 (4203) 10 years ago

This also explains those people who are and report being satisfied in horrible or dead end jobs. They see themselves as mature and responsible too but in reality they are deluding themselves into a controlled and mundane existence. I guess someone has to perform that kind of thing. Not me! Call me irresponsible or crazy. That I can deal with.

[-] 2 points by elf3 (4203) 10 years ago

Yeah it would be easier considering if another world isn't possible because we can't pull other people out of their fake stupor, then we ourselves are going to be trapped except we will know it = misery...

[-] 3 points by elf3 (4203) 10 years ago

Choosing unhappiness in favor of progress freedom and truth...why the hell do we do that?

[-] 1 points by elf3 (4203) 10 years ago

JOHANSSON, HALL, & SIKSTRÖM144 Unknown to the participants, on certain trials, a double-card ploy was used to covertlyexchange one face for the other. Thus, on these trials, the outcome of the choice becamethe opposite of what they intended. The number of manipulated trials detected by the participants was surprisingly low.Even when they were given unlimited time to deliberate upon their choice no more than30% of all manipulated trials were detected. But not only were the participants often blindto the manipulation of their choices, they also offered introspectively derived reasons for preferring the alternative they were given instead.

http://www.academia.edu/3188456/From_change_blindness_to_choice_blindness

And apparently they believe they chose this system according to psychological studies...so they create reasons why they like it and invent reasons they chose it. I'm sure corporations koch and the like are exploiting these findings as well.
