I guess he read it in the New York Post and saw it on Fox.

[-] Thrasymaque 1 points 11 minutes ago "The Occupy Movement, has, by consensus, determined to be nonviolent." They have not agreed to this by consensus. It was a decision implemented from the very get go. It was proposed by AdBusters before any consensus even took place. AdBusters has always been about culture jamming, and not violence. The goal as always been to force clashes with the police and hope the authorities retort with violence so they can use this against them in the media. ↥like ↧dislike reply permalink

stop talking about this guy and stop commenting on his posts. If you want to solve the asshole problem on this site, stop giving them what they feed on; Attention.

[-] 0 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 12 years ago

This guy suppresses legitimate information about the 911 events as well as crackpots like stuartchase and works to conflate discourse about a serious matter with all sorts of nuttery. As he is more or less on good terms with at least one of the moderators I felt it worth while to make it loud and evident what he is and what he is up to. If the moderators were moderating this problem wouldn't even exist.

whatever thrasymaque tells them to . Doesn't it seem strange that thrasymaque can do, whatever he or it wants, without getting banned?

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

What's strange? I never use profanity, and only deface the posts that are already deemed against the forum rules by the moderators. The rest of the time I engage in serious debate. Read the forum rules. Conspiracy theories are not allowed on here. That should give you a big clue as to why I'm left alone instead of being continuously banned like you clowns.

[-] 0 points by timir (183) from Brooklyn, NY 12 years ago

information here about conspiracy ban - it is only just a mark for OWS visitors. and conspiracy ban regulation was made to protect OW interests. Therefore OW movement web site do not take responsibility for individuals who post their theories. in recent time conspiracy theory may be considered like a threat. and YOU are not elected by OW or any other organizations to make those illegitimate assessments

[-] 1 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 12 years ago

Beats me.

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

As you know, posting 911 conspiracy theories is against the forum rules. If the moderators were doing their jobs, I wouldn't have to deface your posts, they would simply be deleted and your account banned.

If Occupiers are this eager to distract themselves with a red herring instead of pursuing tangible objectives then I submit that this is evidence to show why the 99% are ruled by the 1%. This group organizing a Constitutional Convention or accomplishing a real revolution is about as unlikely as a pack of sled dogs assembling a nuclear weapon.

All non violent resistance movements - against evil- must provoke the system to prove to the cameras and the world- That the people are living under oppressive conditions. where if you speak out against the corruption of government , you will be beaten, maced, jailed. threatened. and if ows gets any stronger they will be shot.

[-] 0 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 12 years ago

"where if you speak out against the corruption of government , you will be beaten, maced, jailed."

That's the truth. This is not the same thing as saying that OWS wants to provoke police violence. the US cops could respond to unrest the same way that Russia's has (at least as of today), that is by standing back and allowing the opponents to speak and assemble peaceably.

My personal opinion is that Times Square New Year's Eve is a good place to avoid. I fear the worse can happen. I would advise anyone and everyone to stay away from there. I have no special information, it's my hunch - my gut feeling - that something really terrible is overdue to happen in New York. There has been one incident of a vehicle illegally parked there and ignored by NYPD, whose members are always thinking about their perks, their donuts, their days off, their retirements and don't attend to what is supposed to be their jobs.

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/seeing_no_TO4RmTqsjQzbuRUQ2cZOOJ

The bomb that fizzled in Times Square was not uncovered by cops but by sidewalk vendors. You see cops sitting munching snacks at the Brooklyn Bridge, the tunnels. so what? This is the security you depend on. Good luck with that. I'm staying away from there on New Year's Eve and so should everyone else.

not at all, do I want to see protesters beaten

one and all, do I want the eyes of the world open

the camera expands our perception

[-] 0 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 12 years ago

Could you say that in prose? As Thrasy says, I'm not educated, so I don't know what your point is.

[-] 1 points by Mattholck (51) 12 years ago

I'll fix a verb case error, and move it to twitter to fiddle with it later

[-] 0 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 12 years ago

Are you agreeing with thrasy, the New York Post and Fox that OWS tries to get its people beaten and maced "on purpose"? Are you saying that's a good thing? really I can confess to being slow, tht's not a crime.

[-] 1 points by Mattholck (51) 12 years ago

no one wants to e beaten

[-] 0 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 12 years ago

Well, as a veteran NYC night shift cab driver I can dispute that, I mean I've taken people to and from places where they pay to get beaten, but yeah. Saying OWS goes out to get beaten and maced is a terrible slander and an attack on everyone who is part of or even is just rooting for OWS, and an attack on the 99%.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

Feeling that the envelope is being pushed on many fronts; It is excessive force, remain on the fence with this - because many in the movement, are in it for the wrong reasons. Not in agreement with the police, we know that if people are afraid to go out in public due to the crowds (in certain cities this is causing issues) that something must be done to get people to behave...There has been excess force and disagree with that.

Many adults are nothing more than aged children that misbehave all the time through many outlets. They simply have not "grown up"

[-] 0 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 12 years ago

There never is a valid excuse for excessive police use of force, "pain compliance" techniques.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

Fear on part of those in control - trickles down to those who enforce control....The fear is at the top, police are programmed pawns to advance the agenda.

[-] 1 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 12 years ago

There is nothing the 99% can do to allay those fears. Even a totally passive population would evoke fear in the 1%, and in fact the population still is pretty much passive. OWS is a harbinger perhaps. I hope so.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

I do agree that it has gotten to excess, because of fear on their part.

There are many out there that have drawn negative attention to this organization, which has upped the ante on the other side...(police/gov)

I do agree it has gotten out of hand. It is at the expense of all that a few are ruining it for the greater whole....

The police really think they are at war with the citizenry. They are afraid and fear drives hate/anger/sufferering...

[-] 0 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 12 years ago

Fear on the part of the cops? Really? What are they afraid of from a woman who is crouching on the ground behind a netting the cops already have her captive in? A grandmother in her eighties in Seattle gets soaked with pepper spray because these goons are afraid of her? Really? I got tossed down the staircase in a precinct house while I was handcuffed to another prisoner because those thugs were scared of me?

What was being implied in above post , is they are being trained this way.. At war with citizenry; your cited example only shows how messed up it has become.

Wait until our military is patrolling the streets "in fear & terror" and more of us will be brutalized...

I do not disagree, and thanks for the links..I will be busy for a bit.

"Wait until our military is patrolling the streets "in fear & terror" and more of us will be brutalized."

I hope those days don't come but I fear they shall.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

Show no "fear" that is how they win. Give minimal respect to the authority, nothing more nothing less, and go on your way....Pick and choose battles wisely...

If you show fear, it will be exploited and you will become prey to the predators.

[-] 0 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 12 years ago

I respect them to the extent that they can harm me. The only authority I really do respect are the ones who try to keep traffic flowing safely. They do a public service and without them there would be more traffic fatalities and injuries and it would take longer to go from here to there.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

What I meant, is wink and nod for now, do not forget - pick and choose battles wisely when the time comes....do not react in cocky, disrespectful manner.

Stay quiet, step back, learn the strategy, find the flaw then exploit. Wait until they empty their ammo; Do not waste energy reacting to somebody with a power trip. Chances are without the sidearm & badge, they would cower and bow to you or simply run the other way...

WTF? Antother Bash Thrasymaque POST???....

I do not know why everyone keeps singling T-maq out , and creating posts on him....If you don't agree with opinion, simply debate in a civil manner.

A couple of his replies got to me on a couple of topics back, and we had some INTELLIGENT debate...It was actually fun. He is engaging, sometimes likes to pour some gas on things - perhaps this is to weed out the less intelligent majority, that protest by finger pointing and name calling amongst many other immature tactics demonstrated throughout this forum.

Is this not what the forum is all about, debate? On this point, I happen to agree with the comment he made quoted at heart of this post...

Many in the movement have broken away from this self described, nonviolent status; this is most likely due to a lack of organization and the lack of leadership. Many are their to throw stones, call names, etc just as a simple tribal outlet.

On the other hand there are many who mean well.

There are people in the protests that have given it a bad rap, do you not agree???

It it Thrasymaque's fault for pointing out a fact? Sometimes the truth hurts....

[-] 2 points by shadz66 (19985) 12 years ago

@ 'NEP' : Though no one is questioning his intelligence ; his judgement is extremely suspect, imho !

It is however, the "ThrasyMonkey's" own fault that he has repeatedly posted pornographic imagery on this forum and that he seems to have hubristically appointed himself as our 'forum censor in chief' !!

'Thrasy" is an inveterate bully and as he has made his own bed, you should leave him to lay in it !!!

ad iudicium ...

[-] 1 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

That was not him with the porn, that was Thrasymoque, there are other impostors, Thrasymene, Thrasymquae,Thrsaymaque , etc - These IDs were all created (notice mis-spelling) to start trouble and give him a bad name;

It was always those that couldn't hold up debate with him, would create a mis-spelled Identity and start trouble - Once he pointed out the mis-spelling to me and cited the posts, and opponents at fault, I realized that these people have been starting more crap than they blame him for.

He defaces some of the posts, so what - most of the posts that this happens to are useless; they have so much misleading info - people actually start going back and forth over threads that have nothing to do with politics, the movement , etc..

Many of these are simply created to get him to respond.... He has been "censoring" the things that have started trouble, and are created to distract the real topics we should be engaging in.

I re-read many posts, and he was the one that pointed it out, there are actual trouble makers on here, that created impostor IDs, I thought he was a trouble maker - but only until I engaged him, and questioned him directly, he showed me the threads of the impostors....

This is childish, non-productive and he seems to be the only one taking initiative to self-police the forums. Of course he will take hits for this. I took down a couple of threads using similar methods and was equally blasted for it......

We are mostly adults on here, it is time we stick to the facts if the movement is to sustain.... See , if he says something like this, he would be hung out and chastised for "bashing the movement"

Sometimes the truth hurts, if it does - do something about it.

[-] 2 points by shadz66 (19985) 12 years ago

"He" has owned up more than once to posting under more than one moniker ("Glaucon" being at least one of his alter egos). He seems to be labouring under the impression that his own writing style (vocab., syntax. grammar etc.) is undetectable to readers - especially in "his" longer posts ?!

I think that he may be a tad autistic and a shade schizophrenic but as "You" seem such an expert on "him", what d'you think ? ~{;-p)

ab absurdum ...

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 12 years ago

That is simply not true. Thrasymaque has said himself that his writing style is the evidence that distinguishes him from other fake posters that use similar names. Same thing with the graphics. They are mostly comical and have a way of making fun of whatever the subject is.

I don't believe for a second that he posted anything obscene.

First, there is no evidence that he did. Second, he has no reason to post anything obscene. He gets plenty of attention and discussion without resorting to obscenity. So what would be the point? Third, there have been so many fakes attaching themselves to him - in order to get attention. It's far more likely that if there was anything obscene, it came from a fake. If he did, wouldn't his IP be banned. It's pretty simple. He's still here. The fakes are gone.

[-] 2 points by shadz66 (19985) 12 years ago

To your expertise on all things "Thrasy", I humbly defer (NOT ;-) !!!

Now go do something useful with your time and watch "INSIDE JOB", The Latest Working Link : http://documentarystorm.com/inside-job/ !!

fiat lux !

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 12 years ago

I didn't say I was an expert. I was just pointing out logical common sense. My common sense tells me that Thrasymaque would not post anything obscene.

I don't know why you don't acknowledge my points, which I think make alot of sense. Instead, you've seemed to change the subject.

I've already seen the Inside Job. If you or anyone else is interested in more information about the financial crises, I would recommend reading books instead. There is alot more in depth information in books than you can possibly get from a movie. Some good ones that I liked - "Too Big to Fail" by Andrew Sorkin and "All the Devils Are Here" sorry, can't remember the authors. Also "The Big Short" by Michael Lewis.

ok, so now can you at least acknowledge my points and let me know what you think?

[-] 2 points by shadz66 (19985) 12 years ago

@pril (abv.!) & Thr@sy (B,low!) : Which points points & more pertinently, whose points ?!

I think "you - WHOever YOU think that "you are", should read :

Get A Life and STOP looking for my approval !!

ad iudicium !!!

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 12 years ago

My points. I numbered them - First, Second and Third.

First, where is the evidence that Thrasymaque posted anything obscene? Is there an obscene post with his user name and IP address attached to it? Did you see it? Or are you just going by heresay?

I have never seen Thrasymaque post anything even remotely obscene. I've never seen him write anything obscene. But I have seen many fakes writing obnoxious ridiculous stuff. So this leads me to the logical common sense conclusion that the real Thrasymaque would not post anything obscene.

Second, what reason could he possible have for posting anything obscene? I see no reason for it, since he already gets lots of attention and discussion for his perfectly non-obscene posts.

Third, like I said, I have seen many fakes posing as him. I haven't seen any fakes around lately. Some of them are gone because they have been banned. Thrasymaque has had the same user name for like two months and is still here. Not banned.

Given all of this, wouldn't it make sense that if there was any obscene material, it would have come from a fake? Why would he do something like that which would just discredit himself? He likes to come here to debate with people. It would not make any sense.

"WHOever YOU think that "you are"? I have no idea what you mean by this. I think I'm me. In fact, I'm sure of it.

Why do you keep changing the subject? You said that Thrasymaque posted pornographic pictures. I replied to that subject. That's the way a conversation is supposed to work. I'm not looking for your approval. I was responding to your post, expecting you would reply back to my comments. The way a conversation is supposed to go. Instead, you basically ignored my comments, and changed the subject. I think that is very strange.

However, I tried to be polite and respond to your change in subject. I am also interested in the financial crisis, so I didn't mind doing so very much.

But I think it's a little rude that you would ignore my points. The things I labeled "First", "Second" and "Third". And I don't need to get a life, I already have one. And I know that I am "me", just so you are clear on that. Hopefully we've at least got that much covered so you don't change the subject to that again.

ad iudicium. I'm coming up with this is latin for common sense. I'm trying to do that. Tell me what I said that doesn't make sense.

[-] 2 points by shadz66 (19985) 12 years ago

YAWN !! I didn't read the above. Please Get A Life & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQ1NXbNRaug !

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 12 years ago

ok, nice song. But what the heck is your point?? This is a bald girl singing. What does that have to do with your accusation that Thrasymaque posted obscene material? You are not making sense.

If you can't be bothered to read a reply that is in response to your post, why do you come to this forum? That doesn't make sense either.

I'm starting to see a pattern here with you. I'm going to have to conclude that there is something wrong with you. I won't make any accusations except to say, you don't make sense. Which is fine I suppose. It's your life, and if you are going through life not making any sense, that's your choice.

How about stop making baseless accusations about Thrasymaque (or others, just in case there are more people you are slandering) for which you have no evidence.

[-] 2 points by shadz66 (19985) 12 years ago

Yawn Again !

Tho' I did read this one and thus like much to do with "ThrasyMonkey", this thread is only generating more "Heat" but little or no "Light" !!

"May June and July" be good for you and let's all see what next summer brings !!!

dum spiro, spero ...

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 12 years ago

May, June, July, that's very cute. I like that.

In the future, I hope you follow your own advice about "Heat" and "Light" as it relates to Thrasymaque. : )

[-] 2 points by shadz66 (19985) 12 years ago

Re. your questions : "First, where is the evidence that Thrasymaque posted anything obscene? Is there an obscene post with his user name and IP address attached to it? Did you see it? Or are you just going by heresay?" !

a) I saw it myself ; b) Yes, there must be - unless he's deleting them afterwards & I'm sure that no one is saving them ; c) Yes, I did & d) No, see a) & c) !!

Also, whist looking for an old forum-post of my own I came across this, which perhaps you ought to also consider : http://occupywallst.org/forum/why-is-thrasymkay-spamming-porn-to-this-forum-with/ from 2 weeks ago !!!

"ThrasyMonkey" is proving to be a bit of an old round 'energy vampire' and 'Disrupter In Chief' on this forum and we can all do without it !!

IF you know him and can get him to '1-2-1' with you "April", then please ask if he "May Stop June what he's doin' !" and if won't answer truthfully, ask him "Why July ?" (geddit?)

ab absurdum ;-)

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

"ok, so now can you at least acknowledge my points and let me know what you think?"

You shouldn't use big words like that. The verb - to think - can't be just thrown around at leisure.

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 12 years ago

You are correct! It seems I've committed a logical fallacy. lol. Did I describe that right?

Oh my gosh, now I have to go read all his stuff up there! lol. I think he's ignored my points again and is trying to change the subject. He's the one that started talking about pornography. Now he's talking about the financial crisis I think. That's like conversational whip lash. Very strange. Just as well maybe, I think the financial crisis is a more appropriate topic anyway. Maybe he got bored of talking about you finally. : ) Hey my sneaky strategy worked!!

Have to go look up ad iudicium now.

A "Thrasymaque" expert ??? This is funny.... No , not an expert, just a general observer. I read everything, read into nothing; I simply take a step back and analyze. I have engaged him on many posts, and often I found a lot in common.

The reactions to absurdity on the other hand, all depends on perspective, and who is throwing it out....

As for autism/schizo, etc I think not. I do not pass judgment unless I know for certain..

There are others on here that used many "clone" identities, many of which were used to fake the originals. Once this was pointed out, I took another step back to view the big picture....

He seeks truth, and tries perhaps too passionately to wake others up to reality...

Most people that are from other countries get it...Like me, he is not under influence of "media spell/programmed pop/consumption/follow the pied piper" as the masses are. Many believe what they see on TV and read, most is propaganda. Most of what is created is to keep the masses confused and unable to think for themselves, only think with what is presented.

Most people think based on ego, and some seeds planted in at one time or another and create belief system on this. It is false. You live life through a tunnel, with tunnel vision, based on a reality created for us all - based on what news media, movies, sit coms, etc that formed personality. I never fit into this category myself, and often have been branded weird for having a brain, thinking for myself......

Those who do not fit in the program are always alienated by default, called weird, schizo, etc...

I can tell a lot has changed since I grew up, most people are not original anymore. Social engineering is what its all about, and the only people that are normal anymore are those that tell it like it is. Most are from other countries, or have language barriers.
They are not programmed....

I have seen the transition throughout my life unfold, it is sad to see there are not many thinkers and dreamers left.

The only thing he is guilty of is being a thinker, problem solver, realist and dreamer. I guess I am guilty of the same, and I am proud of it.

I feel he is trying to do his part and open people up to the big picture, take off the blinders if you will....

OK "ThrasyFAN", as a person from "another country", I can relate to your passionate defence but should "he" read and register "your" posts then hopefully, "he" will refrain from The Porn in future !!! ;-)

I guess I missed this whole porn thing.....I did see something about a Peter Pan pic; I think he likes to spark debate and many of you take it to heart, or read into things the wrong way. He is blunt and tells like it is, therefore mis-interpreted. It has happened to me as well, and I had to sugar-coat things or waste paragraphs explaining so everyone could understand my point.

None of us are 100% perfect by any means. I have personally witnessed on here , impostors utilizing variations of his ID and this was to deliberately start trouble. Once I revisited the posts, I noticed several were a mis-spelled variation.

Then people that got angry @ the impostors started attacking the original....

I can say that there are many out here who enjoy debate... Personally, I refrain from attacks on anyone person, in another way in different context doing so only attacks yourself or someone you may care about....

All I think I am trying to say, lets get along here... We are all in the same sinking boat - lets stop throwing each other overboard.

NEP : I agree with your sentiment (even if Thrasy "himself" doesn't {see his most recent post below}). As such, on the matter of that which binds us :

Not really sure what I am supposed to be looking for here, the only thing that does not sit right with me in regards to 9/11 is tower 7......exploding on camera floor by floor and collapsing..And week leading up to it were allegations that pentagon lost a lot of money, Rumsfeld was in the hotseat. Then it happened, and all of that was forgotten.

There is reasonable doubt surrounding many situations out there..

However, there are bigger fish to fry, the bankers/elitists (those who have corrupted the system with lobbyists) politicians, etc that are real problems. We must keep our eyes on the ball, rather than stay divided on issues in the past..

[-] 2 points by shadz66 (19985) 12 years ago

Right Then !!! Drop this bollocks and go watch "Inside Job" !! Link Above ! ;-)

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

I have already seen it amongst many others with similar points of view....Like JFK, many shots fired, magic bullet theories, etc; all reasonable doubt and distractions to keep our eyes off of the ball.... Many have bitten into the poison apples, and cannot think for themselves... I feel there is much corruption and I know what is what...

The thing is we cannot change what has happened thusfar; various "comissions" created throughout history immediately following serious events have always been to distract, and program the results into the weak minded masses, while everyone is still shaken or terrorized and will believe anything to move on.

This is why we are in the situation we are in now.

" The goal as (sic) always been to force clashes with the police and hope the authorities retort with violence so they can use this against them in the media. "

This is a slander against the movement that is worthy of the NY Post andFox. Thraymaque goes ape at the sight of the numbers "911" and proceeds to vandalize posts with all sort of ridiculous images. This also tends to discredit the website and has nothing to do with debate. He is bad news, especially as he claims to be a friend of the OWS movement.

@louis : Backing you up with : http://occupywallst.org/forum/why-is-thrasymkay-spamming-porn-to-this-forum-with/ !! An unpleasant but necessary subject, as The "ThrasyMonkey" is such an "energy vampire" on this forum. Quel Dommage ~{:-(

If it's written then it's libel, not slander, and what he said is completely true. I posted asking why Occupy is against cops, asking how it makes sense to clash with cops for the sake of clashing with cops. I stayed focused on that post for a whole day because I wanted to poll the crowd to see how they felt about it. The responses illustrate very clearly that what he said is true.

"He is engaging, sometimes likes to pour some gas on things - perhaps this is to weed out the less intelligent majority, that protest by finger pointing and name calling amongst many other immature tactics demonstrated throughout this forum."

I think you're the first here to nail this right on the head. Indeed, I push a little hard sometimes to get a better feel for my opponents. The people here creating anti-Thrasymaque posts are mostly the conspiracy theorists. They are the easiest to destabilize. The real intellectuals on this forum, and there are some, don't get angry so easily.

The only thing I get annoyed or angered at, speaking in my capacity as a OWS-friendly public intellectual, is that I constantly have to tell the nutters on this site to loosen the bands on their tin-foil hats and go see a competent mental health professional.

But I am sure I will have to say it many, many, times again.

A growing body of evidence points to a concerted campaign to prepare Americans and the world for war against Iran. This is not idle speculation. It fits a pattern that repeatedly preceded previous hostilities.

Here are the recent examples on Iran:

-The claim that Iran is a WMD threat. Pretty much everyone is familiar with the long-term, continuing efforts to paint Iran as some kind of nuclear threat. This ignores the possibility that Iran is telling the truth in contending it is embarked on solely non-military nuclear research (debatable), and serious doubts among many experts that Iran is preparing nuclear weapons. Perhaps most important, it discounts the fact that many countries (including Iran’s arch-enemy Israel) have nuclear weapons, and disregards the undoubted truth that if a country like Iran ever did launch nuclear weapons, it would be wiped out in a nanosecond, creating a very strong disincentive for offensive use. At the same time, by encouraging other countries and internal foes to believe that it has nuclear weapons, Iran creates an inexpensive protective shield for its regime. A dangerous game, to be sure, but without further evidence of Iranian nukes, hardly a reason to launch a war that would surely cause even more death and destruction than the misguided Iraq invasion.

-The claim that Iran tried to hire Mexican drug cartel hit squads to kill a Saudi ambassador on US soil (fizzled). Remember this one? So ludicrous that even ultra-cautious corporate news organizations laughed it out of the spotlight. Still, it may have been a test of what will fly—and likely did impact a percentage of the population, particularly those getting their info from jingoistic outlets like Fox.

-The claim that Iran was complicit in the 9/11 attacks (current). A federal judge, reviewing evidence presented in a lawsuit on behalf of 9/11 victims, concluded this month that it proved Iran “provided direct support to Al Qaeda specifically for the attacks…on September 11, 2001.” This one may gain traction due to powerful lingering emotions on the topic. (For complaints about the general operating style of the judge who ruled in the case, click here.) Because this ruling and the underlying lawsuit are based largely on the claims of defectors (and past experience shows that defectors frequently trade politically valuable assertions for personal benefits), more research is needed on this. (Remember discredited CIA Iraq source “Curveball”?) The cited “NSA intercepts” also bring to mind the intercepts put forward as proof that Saddam had WMDs.

It is further worth noting that the defendant, Iran, was not present to challenge the assertions. In addition, examination of many of the plaintiff assertions shows that they may misrepresent circumstantial evidence. (Example: “Several of the 9/11 hijackers transited Iran on their way to or from Afghanistan, taking advantage of the Iranian practice of not stamping Saudi passports.” This ignores the fact that Iran, which is an enemy of Saudi Arabia, makes a practice of not stamping Saudi passports so that Saudi nationals, especially minority Shiites, do not get in trouble with Saudi authorities on their return—similar to Cuba’s practice of not stamping American passports.)

This story has yet to break big, but count on the ruling to be cited increasingly in the months ahead by those pushing for war.

And here are a few past examples of fake accusations and media distortions (1990 to 2011).

Blame Saddam for Incubator baby deaths and plots against Bush’s father; provoke him by slant drilling from Kuwait, then imply no objection if he takes action; blame him for 9/11 complicity, falsely tie him to Al Qaeda, claim he possesses WMDs and poses an imminent threat, misrepresent claims to make it seem that he did not destroy WMD stocks as ordered.. More here and here and here.

-Blame Qaddafi for Lockerbie bombing, mass rapes, mass murder, fund an uprising, then bomb him for “humanitarian” reasons when he responds in order to assure his survival. Click here and here for more on this.

You don’t have to approve of these regimes to see that these appear to be (and in many cases certainly were) false provocations that reek of ulterior motives (hint: how many of these countries are oil exporters?) In fact, you can abhor these regimes and hope that they will not survive, and still realize how problematical it is for the American government to repeatedly foist big lies on its own people. This kind of thing is beneath any administration claiming lofty ideals and purporting to serve the public interest—and something that none of us should feel comfortable being party to.

If the public interest is defined as “seizing oil wherever it may be found,” then, well, that’s a conversation we need to have…and quick. There are severe consequences of this definition. Among them, the empowerment of those forces, both corporate and governmental, that profit most from the unbridled development of fossil fuels—and that have good reasons to block the development of renewable sources of energy. They’re known today as the One Percent, and they are destroying our world.
