Pink slime -- that ammonia-treated meat in a bright Pepto-bismol shade -- may have been rejected by fast food joints like McDonald's, Taco Bell and Burger King, but is being brought in by the tons for the nation's school lunch program.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is purchasing 7 million pounds of the "slime" for school lunches, The Daily reports. Officially termed "Lean Beef Trimmings," the product is a ground-up combination of beef scraps, cow connective tissues and other beef trimmings that are treated with ammonium hydroxide to kill pathogens like salmonella and E. coli. It's then blended into traditional meat products like ground beef and hamburger patties.

I signed. WE all need to take direct action when it is offered. Thanks Nevada1. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/9/stop-using-pink-slime-beef-in-schools/

Folks this is what I said what would you say?:

We need to invest in our children and their schools. This country is going to Hell in a hand Basket. Get physical education a boost provide nutritious meals get rid of junk food, fund creative arts in school as well as music and Go after the criminals of the economic melt down. We would not need to worry about funding good schools if our country was not being manipulated by the corrupt.

Yes I am angry. We need to stop the demise of our children's future.

Good post.

This is why I buy meat at an actual butcher shop.

It's a local business, with a trusted butcher, and it tastes so good.

They say hello, when I walk in the door...........:)

Go vegetarian ! Torturing cute fuzzy things is really mean anyway....go on You Tube and download the videos where factory farms are caught skinning them still alive or gestation cages where pigs live in a concrete cage so small they can't move their entire lives and you will not eat meat again anyway - well if you have a soul. I only hope karma exists and the heads of McDonalds and corporate eateries all come back as cows or pigs.

Resist the urge to eat this stuff.

[-] 1 points by RedSkyMorning (220) 12 years ago

I've worked on this before. You're petition may help here. School districts don't have the money to pay for better food themselves. The money has to come from the Feds.

[-] 1 points by Nevada1 (5843) 12 years ago

If managers of food producers had to eat this, it would not be happening.

Hi BradB, Thank you for post.

Just received petition from Care2 Action, about this.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/9/stop-using-pink-slime-beef-in-schools/

Let's go viral with this.

This slime is sweepings from the slaughter house floor.

[-] 1 points by badlimey (48) 12 years ago

Just add it to the list of the thousands of other injustices, inequalities, and criminal acts that take place every day. It's time to get focused people.

Would you please read the following article and respond with your comments either privately or via this forum.

The time to facilitate change is now and we are running out of time. If we have not created massive exposure for this cause before the war with Iran takes place we have lost. Thanks,

I read somewhere that it's not really meat at all. It's mostly connective tissue.

But don't forget, they keep telling us kids are our "most precious resource." But they don't bother to rebuild our infrastructure so kids can live in safe enviroments, while infantalizing playgrounds on the basis of "saftey." Our schools are overheated puke-green experiments in Psychological warfare, where the bullying is so out of hand that every month or so, a kid finds an uzi and blasts a few dozen of his classmates.

Most of the teachers at least tacitly condone this bullying, because it gives them a vicarious thrill, and because it reinforces the sick social order which they themselves secrely despize (the reason they condone it being simple spite and cowardice). Most teachers who don't fit this profile are labled troublemakers, and find themselves packing.

Finally, when these kids graduate there are no jobs out there for them to find that don't lead to self-loathing and despair. So a lot of them go off to fight in foreign wars, the reasons for which they can't comprehend, and when they get back they end up living under a dumpster somewhere.

Yup, we Americans really love our children.

"Yup, we Americans really love our children." You sure can say that again!

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

How can we even hope for an improving society when we are doing this to our children. It is nothing short of appalling.

[-] 2 points by fiftyfourforty (1077) from New York, NY 12 years ago

It is appalling. I agree. I grew up in NYC and raised to kids in NYC. It was constantly and always so that they fed garbage to the children and no complaining, no promises ever changed that.

[-] 1 points by shield (222) 12 years ago

Any time United States uses the term "our" they mean "their". I was reading a book about scientific innovation throughout history and it pointed out something interesting. Historically, the scientific community has been resistant to new theories, especially those which undermine the currently understood and widely accepted paradigms. It is rarely established scientists who delve into new areas of research and innovate in those areas, but newcomers to the field who have yet to be indoctrinated with the old systems and find the new ones stimulating and engaging.

My point in bringing this up here is this: By leaving education in the hands of the greatest criminals in the world, who is indoctrinating our kids? And with what kinds of systems? Things were bad when I was in school. That was only 6 years ago and I can see that it's already gotten much worse.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

Very Good Point, but I still wouldn't give up in public shools. Like all out institutions they can either work, or not work, depending on the people who run them. I think in spit of the inevitable sacrifices with most families already having two jobs and still trying to take care of a family, this thing we must do . . . we must get involved in the system to save ourselves from an every-widening cycle of decline.

[-] 1 points by shield (222) 12 years ago

If the public school system is to remain, I would like to see it taken out of the control of the federal government, and well as the "associated" taxes. I would like to see schools run by local (town-local, not state) groups so that those actually going to the schools (or their parents) have a say in what goes on in their own lives.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

I understand your point of view. Public schools have a checkered, if not dismal track record in the last two or three generations,. But if your childrens needs aren't being met, I would recommend home schooling rather than charter schools. Charter schools have had an even worse record that public schools, on the whole, when it comes to educating children. Home schooling now is the method whereby children really learn and fulfill themselves. But for many people that is simply impractical. I think public schools can be, and need to be, reformed. That is possible. We once had excellent public schools in America and we can have them again. But we need to get belligerent in our advocacy. We need to express our anger and dissatisfaction or nothing will change.

[-] 1 points by shield (222) 12 years ago

I agree to a certain extent. I have never accepted the idea that public schools used to be good and have never had proof provided. I also am not aware of an accurate history of public school in this country.

Let's assume that it started as a local (again, town-local) effort to provide education for the children of that town, whereby those children's parents paid or provided some form of compensation to those townsfolk who were to provide the education (directly, and not through "school boards" or governments). I would (and did) suggest that this method would be most preferable to those who's children are to receive education from a source other than those children's parents. The point at which I would propose that things went south is the point at which the federal government (which is not composed of the parents of the children to be educated) gained control of the school system.

I disagree with the idea that the people of this country can petition the federal government to change the school system such that it is in the favor of those who's children are to receive education. I believe that if we are to see education in this country reach (or be restored to) an adequate level, we must truly RE-FORM the school system. We must make it impossible for a central agency to determine what our children may or may not learn. We, the people of this country, must determine what our children are to learn. It must not be the case that a majority will determine what the children of the minority learn. We must determine what our own children will learn. And since it is truly not practical in this day and age for each of us to adequately teach our own children, WE (not the federal or state government) must create systems in OUR communities which allow this to happen.

[-] 2 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

I posted a long reply here that disappeared. I will only say now that what we need are UNCORRUPTED public schools.

[-] -2 points by HoarFriday (27) 12 years ago

Simple solution, don't have them if you can't home school them, or at least have much more vested interest in their educations than your child-less neighbors subsidizing your children's' educations. This is a huge failure.

How many patent failures, on behalf of The People's government, to educate their wards do people need before they realize it's never been a half-way decent idea to relinquish the honor and responsibility of educating your own, to masses of corrupt bureaucrats?

[-] 1 points by BradB (2693) from Washington, DC 12 years ago

so this is the "PLAN" ... huh ?

do anything to remove public schools... even if it means "POISONING" the kids .... FU...

we need to put these guy's in JAIL

[-] -2 points by HoarFriday (27) 12 years ago

Yeah, your idea of not promoting people taking care of, and responsibility for, their own copulation trophies, is brilliant.

Don't even attempt to open their eyes as to what took place, all giving implied consent the state and waiving parental rights to the same state, and how that can be reversed IF, and only IF, people want to assume responsibility for their own.

How responsible is it for parents to remotely considering any bureaucracies, corrupt or otherwise, any power in determining what their children will eat, much less be taught?

Bring me your children, all of them, for my appointed socialists and communists to educate in the ways of bigger government and submissive citizens who shall forever be grateful to our nation which will soon be 85% government over 15% outsiders.

Ye shall not concern yourselves with how or what they are educated or what food they are fed. After all, we, at the DNC, have entitled digestive tracts and must have the best of all feasts.

Ammonia is cleansing and will rid your children of republican borne parasites and bacteria. Do not question the Lord thy God.

[-] -3 points by onepercentguy (294) 12 years ago

so bring a healthy, wholesome meal packed from home. problem solved. but no, that would take some effort by the parents as opposed to always blaming the schools for not raising your kid correctly

this isnt nearly as offensive as fast food and soda being sold to our kids in school

[-] 3 points by BradB (2693) from Washington, DC 12 years ago

dumb ass ... the only reason for any "school lunch program" ... is to provide "nutrition" for those who can't afford it .... what do u think it is for ????

[-] -2 points by onepercentguy (294) 12 years ago

no, you're just ignorant as to how the program actually works. the program provides food and funding to individual schools, private and public. meaning everyone at a particular school participating in the program eats the same USDA provided foods, whether their lunch is free or not.

what, do you think they have one cafeteria line of regular food for students paying full price and another line of the pink stuff for those on free or reduced lunch? nonsense.

this kind of attitude is why no one takes OWS seriously

[-] 0 points by onepercentguy (294) 12 years ago

what part of what i posted isnt true? they dont feed that stuff only to the free lunch and reduced lunch kids, everyone at a participating schools eats the stuff, bro. that's the whole point of program.

the stuff is every bit as treated and chock full of chemicals at the MREs our soldiers in the field live on, shouldnt you be outraged at how much of an injustice it is that they dont get healthy food too? silliness.

[-] 1 points by BradB (2693) from Washington, DC 12 years ago

you are only thinking about you..... why is it there at all ?

why not simply rent space to fast food joints ?

because..... kids were going to school malnourished ... and this was a way to fix that ....

whatever side spins a school might do... as make a little money... has nothing to do with the purpose

[-] -1 points by onepercentguy (294) 12 years ago

that's why i said their parents should pack them a simple, healthier lunch. sandwich bread, regular lunch meat and a piece of fruit are hardly too expensive for even the poorest of people. i'd put that lunch at less than a dollar, which is what reduced lunches under the program cost approximately anyway.

i was in and out of homelessness for a few years as a kid and my folks were still able to put together sandwich lunches for me. and when they didnt, i ate the processed soy burger and pink stuff chicken nuggets as part of my reduced lunch and, surprise surprise, i didnt die.

the school doesnt magically inherit the parents' responsibility to properly feed and raise a child. its the people who believe that it should that are ruining our country.

[-] 2 points by SmeggitySpooge (78) 12 years ago

Who does your grocery shopping for you or do you eat out every meal?

[-] 1 points by BradB (2693) from Washington, DC 12 years ago

another "wanna be hip" guy ... who thinks he knows what it's like to be impoverished ... or let alone homeless

[-] 1 points by onepercentguy (294) 12 years ago

frantic subject changing aside, the bottom line is you dont even understand the program you're arguing against. like i said, everyone at a participating school eats the stuff, not just the free lunch kids. this is fact. and everyone, even the poor kids, have parents who can pack healthier lunches. you want to blame others rather than hold people accountable for their lack of parenting. that is sad.

[-] 1 points by BradB (2693) from Washington, DC 12 years ago

Hah, hahahahahaha. HAHAHAHAHAHA....!!!!

This really made my night. :D You have clearly never even been close to being homeless much less poor... Heck for that matter, was the last time you set foot in a grocery store the 50's? A dollar, oh wow...

The school lunch program is EXACTLY there for kids whose parents can't afford to feed them. You might try actually going to the usda's site and reading about the program's history you claim to know so much about.

http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/lunch/AboutLunch/ProgramHistory_2.htm

[-] 1 points by RedSkyMorning (220) 12 years ago

You have to divide the cost of all the foodstuffs. You don't send the child to school with a loaf of bread, a bag of apples and a pound of lunch meat. The problem is that if you're trying to avoid them eating chemicals and indigestible ingredients, the cost is much higher.

[+] -4 points by BlackSun (275) from Agua León, BC 12 years ago
