Forum Post: Here's a Great way to get the word out on "The Marches for Return of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 & to Close All Loopholes for Oil Speculators"--Celebrities! And I'm letting them all know...

Posted 12 years ago on Nov. 19, 2011, 2 p.m. EST by Howtodoit (1232)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

For the Marches throughout America to Reinstate the Financial Regulations we had in place in 1999 ( http://occupywallst.org/forum/the-day-the-gramm-leach-bliley-act-of-1999-came-up/), & before 2000 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodity_Futures_Modernization_Act_of_2000), in order to help America get on the same page (fast), I would NOW turn to Hollywood for help. Why? There's nothing like Star Power to help get the word out and to help bring more people to the Marches. Below is a list of Celebrities I put together based on either their charitable work, or I just felt they are a right fit for the Marches. It's at least a good start (in no special order--many others on Twitter page):

Sandra Bullock, Matt Damon, Quincey Jones, Allyssa Milano, Tyler Perry, Teri Hatcher, Rob Thomas, Bret Michaels, Bruce Willis, Johnny Depp, Mr. Sidney Poitier, Emma Watson, John Rich, Kevin Costner, Kirstie Allen, Valerie Bertinelli, Missy Elliott, Third Eye Blind, Kelly Clarkson, Courtney Cox, Cedric The Entertainer, Pamela Anderson, Megan Fox, Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus, Trace Adkins, Sofia Vergara, Michelle Branch, Robert Rodriguez, Luciana Carro, Dierks Bentley, Heidi Klum, Robin Williams, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Debbie Allen, Sharon Stone, Pam Grier, Mandy Moore, Rascal Flatts, Toby Keith, Hank Williams Jr, Faith Hill, Justin Bieber, Tim McGraw, Pitbull, Paula Abdul, Maria Shriver, Joe Mantegna, Neil Patrick Harris, Gretchen Wilson, Rachel Ray, Cloris Leachman, Mariska Hargitay, Chris Daughtry, Carrie Fisher, Slash, Kelly Ripa, The Rock, Shannon Tweed, Carlos Santana, Cindy Crawford, Mary Blige, Mark Wahlberg, Rihanna, Ricky Lake, Jenny McCarthy, Kevin Bacon, Levar Burton, Naomi Judd, Wynonna Judd, Nicole Kidman, Mrs Osbourne & Hubby, Liv Taylor, Sara Paxton, David Hasselhoff, Russell Simmons, Lindsey Lohan, Dave Matthews Band, Jeff Dunham, Bar Refaeli, Denise Richards. Seth Green, Jonas Brothers, Harvey Levin, Hilary Duff, Paula Marshall, Nick Cannon, Eva Longoria, Erin Andrews, Ashely Greene, Chelsea Handler, Carole King, Bob Dylan, Whitney Cummings, Queen Latifah, Cameron Crowe, Cameron Diaz, Janet Jackson, Tyra Banks, Jessica Simpson, Willie Nelson, Lady Gaga, Jason Alexander, Richie Havens, Chris Rock, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Justin Timberlake, Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard, Bobby Lee, Jackie Chan, Kal Penn, John Cho, Lucy Liu, Kelly Hu, Tia Carrere, Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Hudson, George Strait, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Zac Brown Band, Cold Play, Jamie Fox, Vanessa Williams, Alice Cooper, Billy Bob Thornton, Antonio Banderas, Betty Suarez, Mariah Carey, Shakiro, Mario Lopez, Noreaga, Rita Moreno, Gloria Estefan, Angela Bassett, Usher, Lisa Loeb, Alicia Keys, Leann Womack, Sara Evans, Shania Twain, Lorrie Morgan, Linda Ronstadt, Jada Pinkett Smith, Dwight Yoakam, Clint Black, Jim Brown, Forrest Whitaker, Travis Tritt, Danny Glover, J. Lo, Keith Urban, Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal, The Friars Club, Conan O'Brien, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Alba, Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek, Juliette Lewis, Chris Tucker, Sinbad, Ice T, Jay-Z, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Brian Wilson & Beach Boys, P. Diddy, Brooks & Dunn, Jimmy Buffet, Ryan Seacrest, Nancy Grace, Suze Orman, Brooke Burke, Eminem, Anderson Cooper, Jessica Biel, Tyra Banks, Beyonce, Dania Patrick, Jane Fonda, Van Morrison, Gwen Stefani, Carrie Underwood, Natalie Portman, Jack Black, Shaq, Randy Jackson, Jimmy Kimmel, etc.

Why so many? If our Goal is to bring Together every City/Town in America, then we need Star Power everywhere; for example, some will be needed in their hometowns.

Sorry for any typos and for who I left out (running out of space here), but you know who you are! Please Join Us!

Here's my Proposal on "How to Accomplish the Marches for the Return of the Glass-Steagall Act & to Close All Loopholes for Oil Speculators." http://occupywallst.org/forum/howtodoits-proposal-on-how-to-accomplish-the-march/

And I should point out here that I'm an Independent, nothing said or posted here was swayed by any affiliations, except for the school of common sense.

I just saw an opportunity here with this OWS Forum to hopefully help more people understand how and why we got into this financial mess, and one possible way to fix it. That's all. God Bless America!

Please feel to add the others down here....

Re-instating Glass-Steagall is up there with Getting Money Out of Politics. Great idea to march for it!

[-] 2 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Yes! I agree, we should make this first big victory a comb of both! Money out of politics and Reinstating the G-S Act; Then, I feel we will have the strong voice in WDC we desire and need to get the rest done...

For everyone new to this Forum, it is what it is, just a Forum so far, an IDEA Up for Discussion; one, obviously I like. One I feel that could not only go a long way for OWS; but, even more importantly, our Whole Country. Why? Because We can't fix Wall Street and Create more Jobs until we make Congress break-up the Big Financial Giants; so then they have to release the Trillions of Cash they are sitting on into the Economy, make sense? After all, that was a big part of how they fixed the problem in 1933 for future Generations!

And I feel the key to making this MARCH a success is that we also need people from "all walks of life" to come together and join this Mission: To Remake American into the Financial Giant it once was! Before the Wall Street Casinos opened!

So everyone, please join us! As far as I'm concerned, this is not just a OWS March, this is a March for all of America & the World! One everyone needs to be a part of; otherwise, it might be impossible to achieve this Huge Task!

Btw, I not an official member of OWS or anything but Meals on Wheels (and if anyone from WDC is curious, for MOW's I do have my Level 2 Homeland Security Background Clearance). I just saw an opportunity here with this OWS Forum to hopefully help more people understand how and why we got to this financial mess, and one way to fix it. That's all. God Bless America!

Sincerely,

Howtodoit

This is an excellent idea. Get them talking. People will listen.

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Thanks ZenDog! Solidarity! We have to keep dreaming big! We will reach our goals!

After all, once this gets out to the masses, not only will they be MAD, but they will RISE UP and help us accomplish these two big goals: Return of the Glass-Steagall Act and Closing All Loopholes for Oil Speculators! You have to remember here that Congress and Wall Street pulled a fast one on us in 1999-2000, and 99% of the public is unaware of this; otherwise, this would of been DONE a long time ago.

With all due respect, my question to the Media is: How come you always pose this question, "How do we fix the Economy?” Come on, you all went to college--it’s staring us in the face: We Reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act and Close All Oil Loopholes; btw, why again is oil almost $100 a barrel? Well, it’s not because of a supply and demand problem...it’s the Financial Giants buying up the “Oil Futures." How can they do this? They changed the laws with the Commodities Future Modernization Act of 2000 (it’s all on March Forum), which deregulated ENERGY markets! So our first two calls to correct this wrong is former Chair of CFTC Brooksley Born & former Director of CFTC Professor Michael Greenberger. Why? They tried to stop it!

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

We should not stop at oil futures markets - trading in the future price of necessities is to profit from others misery - and since such speculation is known to drive up prices it does indeed induce suffering.

we should examine Deregulation of the media

and every other deregulatory effort undertaken since . . . 1900!

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

It's time to change that too! Go in high gear!

[-] 1 points by Peretyatkov (241) from город Пенза, Пензенская область 12 years ago

To achieve the goal - all methods are good! If only they - under the law. Try it. But, if my opinion - I'm a skeptic with regard to the stars. Why?

  1. They are selfish.
  2. They are on the other side.
  3. They simply do not understand you. They were not interested.
[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

I hear you, but their are some great ones like Russel Simmons!

Maybe a formal generic invitation letter should be drafted to invite celebrities to the march and give options as to what degree of participation they wish to be included. Example as maybe a spokesperson, a marcher, a performer and so on. The letter could be pasted into celebrities facebook pages or on twitter or wherever. But this has to be something that's real and not some pipe dream. How about if 20 or so agree and there are no actions in place in advance for even a legal march to take place.

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Great Idea paulg4. Been wondering were you have been! Go to this forum, I have Followed 90% of them so far on Twiiter and Ashley Judd said she's in!!!! She's our first big one! She's also the Ambassador for YouthAids

Glass-Steagall was only ONE of the reforms designed to fix the problems that led to the Great Depression.

Another measure passed to address the causes of the Great Depression was the Banking Act of 1935. It removed control of the Federal Reserve from the politicians who were using it to further their own political ends. It was the Banking Act of 1935 that established the current method of selecting the Fed's Board of Governors via nomination by the President and confirmation by the Senate much as the Supreme Court (except for only 14 year terms rather than life).

I assume we can all agree we want to keep ALL the lessons learned from the Great Depression, correct ?

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Yes!

Btw, would love to hear your input here: How to March for G-S Act? http://occupywallst.org/forum/howtodoits-proposal-on-how-to-accomplish-the-march/

[-] 1 points by Rico (3027) 12 years ago

Will do... right now I'm busy promoting my Christmas shopping guidelines ! They started inside this forum at http://occupywallst.org/forum/ows-please-support-the-american-worker/ and seemed popular, so I moved them to http://bit.ly/vof9WH where I could "hide" the OWS politics (need those conservatives on-board too!) and provide social media links. My hit counts suggest it's catching on (but PLEASE forward the http://bit.ly/vof9WH link far and wide if you agree... need all the fire we can get!)

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

will do!

Yes! I hope so. And thank you for posting that here Rico! A great reminder.

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

nice heads up, I'm going to twiiter them both this now:

Hi, Thanks for your OWS support & here's an Proposal for The Marches for G-S Act: http://t.co/UtBYofIT Please spread the word!

[-] 1 points by betsydoula (143) from Beverly Hills, FL 12 years ago

Marianne Williamson already spoke at occupy la, and what about Jeffrey Sachs? They are not movie starts but are both intelligent and have much to say. Marianne about spirituality and Jeffrey Sachs about the fate of our species. I'd like to add that many people on the fence about OWS are asking why not occupy congress?

[-] 1 points by TLydon007 (1278) 12 years ago

To be honest, I think Jeffrey Sachs and Cornel West speaking at OWS were more important than any people on that list.

Less star power and more intellectuals is my take.

[-] 1 points by betsydoula (143) from Beverly Hills, FL 12 years ago

Yes, we need more well respected intellectuals.

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Great idea. Please all feel free to post more names here, that's what it's for, after they will all see it soon!

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

any thoughts here? if we do the march, one way to get the word out...

[-] 1 points by number2 (914) 12 years ago

I think everyone should be able to agree with these regardless of political philosophy/ social philosophy.

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

hi number2, my number 1! As someone mentioned earlier, the OWS is only 2 months old! And look what they have done so far...for me this is history in the making...and I feel I can speak for a number of people that I have either used their story or youtube link here on on the Forums--they all love you! Not that I have spoken to them, but I make sure that they know what we are up too! And no one has said no! God Bless the OWS!

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

thoughts? think this will work? What do we have to lose by not trying...

[-] 1 points by kbamazin (7) 12 years ago

Are we really gonna go to celebs to get the word out. we can't do it our selves?

[-] 2 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Of course they will (if they do the March), but the point is that the OWS is for US! So let's make sure they know it too! Plus, what a great way to jump start this movement!

So far, Ashley Judd is on board! That alone may do it..but still feel that when we win back Control of Capital Hill from Wall Street's control (by breaking up the financial giants), it should be everyone's victory! The OWS is for ALL!

That's why main goal is education. After all, once this get's out to masses, the spirit and will of the American People will get it done right...God Bless America!

[-] 1 points by gnomunny (6819) from St Louis, MO 12 years ago

I'm curious as to how you chose this particular list of celebrities. Were they at random or did you have specific reasons for picking them?

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Thanks for asking this. Besides their charity work; honesty, I just felt it was a good fit for the OWS; celebrities that I feel could get March on the Map ASAP. After all, if our goal is to bring together every city in the USA, we need some in their hometowns as well to help to spread the word.

[-] 1 points by gnomunny (6819) from St Louis, MO 12 years ago

In theory I can find no fault with the idea. The problem may be in knowing who was sincere and who would be doing it for their own personal gain. That's the problem with celebrities, they're absolutely dependent on publicity to remain relevant. In and of itself, contributing to charity doesn't automatically mean they're 'good people.' Tax write-offs and such. And I would want to thoroughly research the celebrity before giving them the okay. Case in point: In my opinion, Jay-Z would be completely out of the question. Reason being, he tried to profit off OWS by putting out a t-shirt line (Occupy All Streets) that was quickly cancelled, probably because of the backlash he received by not planning on donating any of the profits to OWS. The smart move on his part would have been to continue the t-shirt but plan on donating to the cause. That would have been good p.r. Instead, he cancelled the shirt. Greed.

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Great point, And please remember my goal here was to offer of some suggestions of who I feel can help us the most now; especially the ones that may not know yet that they are the OWS too! Please keep me in check here, I value your input here...again thanks for this gnomunny!

[-] 1 points by gnomunny (6819) from St Louis, MO 12 years ago

The important thing is you are using your intelligence to come up with new and viable ideas. We need many more like you. What OWS is doing now, some of us feel is only the beginning. We envision tackling many of the problems here in the US and, by extension, maybe other places around the world as well. Many of those celebrities on your list would undoubtedly make a good fit with us. Willie Nelson for one. Having seen many interviews, he seems like a good-hearted person, not at all corrupted by his fame, and has had his fair share of problems with the government. If you are actively pursuing this idea, by all means continue.

[-] 2 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Thanks for that gnomunny. Most likely like yourself, I just felt a calling to help. I love everything the OWS stands for; and I feel Together/United we will all find the best way to help America the Most! And whether the OWS goes in this direction or not, it doesn't sway my opnion of them at the least-- For me, the OWS is the heart and soul of America!

He reputedly had his own golf course once and, when asked what par was, he said, "Par is what I make it; this hole, for instance, is a par 11." Our kinda' guy!

[-] 1 points by gnomunny (6819) from St Louis, MO 12 years ago

You mean Willie? Par 11, that's great! My kinda guy. And course.

[-] 1 points by Phanya2011 (908) from Tucson, AZ 12 years ago

Yep. Nine holes. Par was whatever his score was :)

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

any thoughts here? I can help make this happen!

[-] 1 points by Phanya2011 (908) from Tucson, AZ 12 years ago

You might see what organizations they belong to that already do work in important areas and invite those organizations to join the movement, not as leaders, but supporters.

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Perfect. Great point, And again, my main goal here is ask all of you what do you think of these guys? What are your choices? Thanks Phanya2011

[-] 1 points by Phanya2011 (908) from Tucson, AZ 12 years ago

As far as I'm concerned, anyone and everyone should be invited to join in. It would become clear soon enough if they were in it for other reasons. If one celeb's motive is profit, that alone might bring people who follow a given celeb to the forum...thus are conversions made. Exposure to the ideas is what we seek. Those who fundamentally disagree will always do so. That's why we need to reach the uninformed and unaligned.

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

So what is the OWS doing today? Besides leaving my fellow Americans Camping out for them? Love to hear a game plan! Sincerely...

[-] 1 points by Phanya2011 (908) from Tucson, AZ 12 years ago

http://neworganizing.com/project/candidate-project - this is a group actively seeking new candidates for every election. No better way to occupy Congress than send a whole bunch of people-backed candidates who are beholden to no one else. Let them spend their money on awful ad campaigns; we can choose to ignore them :)

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Perfect. If OWS has the nerve to throw 1000's of people out there with no game plan, I say, what are we doing here? I know I'm broke and have lost a month's pay trying to help out my fellow Americans! Get it TOGETHER OWS! Do something big now! Why? Now, your dealing with my People! Who are you anyway? With this FORCE--I would of had this done last month!

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Btw, what do you think of this Proposal, I hear it's on the Ballot for a vote soon, Wow! That is huge--Thanks OWS! My heart and soul of America!

http://occupywallst.org/forum/howtodoits-proposal-on-how-to-accomplish-the-march/

[-] 1 points by Phanya2011 (908) from Tucson, AZ 12 years ago

To tell you the truth, this is a good idea, but the current Congress will never, ever do it. They have shown us over and over again that they do not care about our country or our people. However, if we can replace every single incumbent in Congress with someone who is on the side of the people, and who will be happy to serve only one term if necessary, then some things can be accomplished. If, as I've been told, such "newbies" are told by the Party that they will be shut up and shot down, they can make a gigantic public fuss about it, since they aren't beholden to anyone but the people. We are in a unique time right now, and I believe all of the old ways will fall apart; we need to be in a position to prop up the system so as to transform it.

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

right, we also need to focus on that too. Only two months old, just wait Congress until we are 7 months old on or around 6/16/12! Go ows

[-] 1 points by Howtodoit (1232) 12 years ago

Yes! Thanks for that. After all the OWS was founded on the belief that it was for all of us; however, some don''t yet understand that, so let's let them all know!
