Thousands Rally to Resist Occupy Portland Evictions

10,000 filled the areas around the Occupy Portland encampments last night as the deadline approached for eviction. 12:01 am came and went but the cops could do nothing: too many supporters blocked their path. It was peaceful.
The cops waited it out and are clearing out the Chapman and Lownsdale Park camps this morning, tearing down the remaining tents. There is a General Assembly meeting at Pioneer Square at noon today. Occupy Portland will continue. The whole world is watching!
Our emperors have no clothes. Our emperors have no shame. These governors, mayors, city councils, police chiefs and street cops of America need to realize that it is NOT UP TO THEM whether or not Americans peaceably gather , protest, discuss, or demonstrate. To avoid buying of candidates which is what happens, some other counties have legislated to limit campaign funds applied by any candidate for advertising. One cap for all.
This would be an improvement but still the best ideas may not get to the publics eye and ear from the most brilliant potential representatives due to their lack of funds, We want to elect leadership and representation with our ideas, not with money.
To over come this a better models has been used.
All candidates advertising is paid for by Govt coffers and no private money can be applied in any way. All candidates are put on the same footing.
Then we may well see a better range of voting options. The cost would be peanuts, and the quality of what we could see would be an out of sight improvement.
Added to that make stringent laws prohibiting any corporations, companies or groups from endorsing or supporting any candidate.
Presidential elections should be direct from the people, independent of middle men. Dump the Electoral College intervention by big money.
There are many ways to break this rotten system of oligarchy that oppresses us.

The local police department failed to act for a period of several hours, despite there being justification to get that protective order in the first place. Watch out for oathkeepers, they have something of a reputation as a being a collective of mercenaries and extremists and their interpretation of the constitution is questionable.
Mercenaries would imply they are not active duty soldiers or veterans, which form the large portion of their membership. We do want them on our side you know.
Also, it is very hard to misinterpret that people have the right to 'peaceably assemble' or be free from warrantless searches and seizures and have the right of due process. Rights we are trying to stand up for ourselves. The only misinterpretation of these basic rights seem to be coming from Mayor's offices these days.

Thats why I push Oathkeepers. Military need to think ahead what they would do if the government starts calling protesters 'enemy combatants'.
The US military is also limited by the Posse Comitatus Act and only congressional approval would allow them to enforce the laws of the land at which point I don't know who has rights anymore.
Under Bush, they amended the Posse Comitatus to read it could be enacted if the president declares martial law or a state of emergency., no Congress needed. And added a clause which said Congress couldn't review it for 6 months.! State of emergency is what happened in Katrina, and national guard and regular army(!) were enforcing public order. The police chief made announcement on national tv declaring that the national guard, us army, sheriffs and police would be going door to door and removing all civilian owned weapons, and they did. The NRA helped the citizens sue and made them give them back. Lot of material and television video available to view about it. It was done once, it could happen again. YOu have to wonder how much would it take to declare martial law or a state of emergency in a city from OWS?
I am having a hard time imagining a declaration of martial law to deal with peaceful protesters. But then again I'm sure the government could twist the facts to make it appear that peaceful protests are a threat to national security because they are impeding business and commerce and creating more debt for the country as a result or some other bullshit excuse like that.

Your article is completly right about the people needing to take over the economic instutions - jobs. Society has evolved to the point where we no longer need money, trading or bartering to keep society funcioning. We only need democracy and a majority of the people to volunteer for jobs and nothing would have to change except starvation, war and genocide would all vanish. There are enough people who care for family and love and peace that people would volunteer and all would soon have enough. But first the people must come together. I am a firefighter in Arizona and have been following the movement on the internet since the media stopped covering it. It disgusts me to no end to see law enforcement being used against the very people that they swore to protect. I don't understand why the police and firefighter labor unions don't speak out against these attacks on the public. After all, labor unions and the movement share the same goals. I support the movement and educate everyone that I can. Keep up the good work and God Bless. On a side note, a local councilman in Phoenix wants to put a price on freedom of speech be billing the protesters for all the police overtime from Occupy Phoenix.

Today the corporations and monied run our country. There is a need for a 28th Amendment to our Constitution to restore rights to we the people. 1. Congress will no longer accept campaign monies from any corporation or lobbyist group, no exceptions 2 Upon leaving public service, no former member of Congress shall be employed as a lobbyist in any form.
Add to that: Politicians are elected by us as Civil Servants. They are not Demi gods. We can vote for their pay raises, benefits and vacation time. Did I read that they just voted to give themselves a week off every 2 weeks? Pensions that amount to 6 digits MUST STOP!! They are currently not working during work hours - must they be paid to do Nothing? Oh, they did pass the baseball hero coin and we can still use In God We Trust on our money - hard work? or hardly working. I'm afraid that there is no difference between the 2 parties anymore - they are all too big and rich to care and am sure they have already laid out their battle plans for us - the people who voted for them - what a world we are leaving for our children - wasn't my American Dream and nor will it "BE" their's - --OWS - Thanks for your enduring what some of us cannot (age/disabilities); but, we are with you in networking, petitions, contributions, and exercise our Occupations at local levels - in the streets - even if only for a day. The policemen defend the elites because are paid by them. The day that the money to pay these monsters will come to an end, they will back us. That is happening in Italy, where the policemen haven't enough money to buy the petrol and to repair the cars. In the meantime we can organize a national or an international "class action" with million people who denounce their brutality. The elites are playing their last cards. They know that, if the citizen win, they will have lost forever. This permits to foresee their imminent debacle.

A 60 Minutes report on Sunday examined the ways that members of Congress trade on inside, privileged information to make themselves rich — without breaking any laws. Even though many positions in the federal government are bound by conflict of interest laws, Congresspeople are exempt from insider trading rules and are perfectly free to make business deals based on information they learn through their jobs.
The story is based on the work of Peter Schweizer, a researcher at the Hoover Institution. (Others have been studying the issue. As Bloomberg's Lizzie O'Leary and others have pointed out, The Wall Street Journal has reported on this issue quite recently and Megan McArdle dedicated her column in The Atlantic's November issue to the phenomenon of "congressional insider trading.") Schweizer and his team have looked at financial transactions made by Representatives and Senators and found that many, including the past three House Speakers, have made deals that appear to be based on non-public information that they had access to thanks to their position in Washington. Schweizer calls it "honest graft," since many people would consider it unethical, even though it's not illegal.
Some times it's stock trades (John Boehner reportedly invested in several health care stocks shortly before killing the public option in last year's legislation) and other times it's simply making a well-timed business deal. I have extrapolated this from three recent NPR news casts. I believe that the 99% Occupy Movement should capitalize on this recipe of three existing wrongs that appear to be among (if not) "the" major contributors to this tragedy that we are all protesting:
Imagine (1) a transparent Congress who is not allowed to withhold the names of companies who financially support their campaigns, while (2) abolishing the 501c4 non-profit "campaign contribution" organization tax code loopholes (that they hide their crime behind,) and (3) repeal Corporate Person-hood, and you will have America back. Period. These are the three legislated policies that formulated this disaster.... It's called "conspiracy," and conspiracy is illegal in this country.

We are getting the news that crimes are being committed by those among the Occupiers. It could be claimed that these are false reports. It is up to Occupiers to find out the truth, though.. because that kind of thing gives the movement a bad name. Occupiers need to police themselves. Their mission is much too important to hide criminals. While Chomsky is not my hero, he often says things that are sensible, like to be a peaceful movement regardless of the emotions that are motivating violence. Anarchistic passion is initially needed to move a body to action (since self-interest is primary in the human psyche) but it burns itself out leaving only chaos in its wake as well as risking rejecting by a public that is coming around to supporting the movement. So it is prudent to know when to turn the corner to more propitious activity. It depends on what Occupiers really want.

This is all over the news in New York. I am sure it will be in the news tomorrow. I spent the day in a quiet sub-urban town watching the kids play soccer. Sideline conversations were about the 99%. Most of the moms and dads agree with the movement. Keep up the fight. I am too old to do it..
The 'news' from Occupy tells a really different picture than what Reuters is saying:
The other day in the Park I was facilitating a discussion when I was approached by a Reuters reporter and asked for my name (by the way, before he identified himself, which is a journalistic no-no). I told the reporter he could interview me if he wanted to, but he could not quote anything I said while facilitating, since I would be synopsizing other peoples' positions (which would mean that he would be quoting me paraphrasing someone else, and not speaking my own position). He promptly left. Reporters who come through Zuccotti Park regularly quote us out of context or ask deliberately leading questions. I'm not saying they're all lying all the time, but they certainly have agenda.
News media is all about appealing to the broadest audience as possible and being as pro-establishment as possible to attract advertisers whose main goal is to sell some sort of a product. A large percentage of people actually believe most of what they read on these "news" sites or from the TV (which is basically some kind of infomercial in disguise.) OWS is getting crucified in the media. Because people don't like to hear the truth and it sure as heck doesn't sell a product.

OWS is getting "crucified" because you have no unified message and no spokesman to represent you to the media. The result is that the media randomly selects anyone who is willing to talk to them and this then becomes the "position" of OWS.

Portland has a population of about 584,000, if generous 10,000 people were at the protest last night not all from Portland per the Occupy Portland "representatives". Even if all were from Portland, that means only 2% of the city is making up the 99%.
What are the numbers like in other cities?
The constitution is an article that described the right people should have and protected.
However, where is the line between obey the law vs. braking the law? You all have the right to protest and exercise your freedom of speech etc. but the other side of the coin there is law and order. The police officers, law enforcements, and military are representing the law that the very same constitution had stated and they sworn to protect. If the people of a city 100% agree upon the movement of OWS, then yes maybe the officer is on the wrong side of the fence, but this is not the case for a town, city, or the whole country at this time yet. The office are holding the laws and defending the constitution for those individual who are opposite of the OWS movement, those individual could be the 40% 30% or even 1% of the whole, but we too have the same right you guys are preaching. I am the individual who is on the opposite side of OWS, I do have the same right as what the constitution had written. The officer in uniform are protecting my right to have a clean and quite public park I can visit, a clear road and sidewalk I can use, and they defending my right of freedom of speech to say NO to OWS movement if they are no longer a peaceful protester. The current government system is base on election; come up with a fair non-leaning election process is going serve greater goods vs. challenge the authority or the law which written base upon constitution to protect all individual having the very same right.

So far, most of what i see are fringe ideologies and a message for change with no fair, equitable, and just plan for implementing that change. Seems like anarchists that resent and want to destroy the very mechanism that enabled them to have a voice in the first place. An idea, lots of hard work, and hopefully, ethics, can produce financial success in America. Godlessness produces corruption in the wealthy and poor alike. I find it a shame that you disparage a group of people who are demonstrating against avarice and covetousness, who - whether they believe in Jesus or Krishna - are representing the spiritual values of egalitarianism, fairness, and concern for their fellow human beings, as somehow Godless. Most prosecutors are not charging the protesters with any crimes and just releasing them as they are not breaking any laws.
