In the aftermath of the worst climate change disaster in New York City history, organizers from Occupy Wall Street and 350.org have teamed up with to coordinate a people-powered relief effort for New York’s hardest hit neighborhoods. Beginning with the Lower East Side, Red Hook, Astoria and Staten Island, volunteer organizers are using the new site Recovers.org to connect offers of help with places of need.

The group has already launched a relief hub in Red Hook, in partnership with the Red Hook Initiative, to help coordinate donations of food and supplies and to cook meals for the over 5,000 residents of the Red Hook Houses housing project that are without electricity in the flooded neighborhood. An afternoon relief caravan will head out to the Rockaways, one of the hardest-hit areas of the city. This evening, members of the OWS Puppet Guild will be putting on free puppet shows for children in the Sunset Park and Red Hook neighborhoods.

“There is only one force more powerful than a storm like this, and that’s the power of people coming together to help their communities. We’ve been able to put together an amazing network of people in a short time who are providing the help our neighbors need, and building stronger, more resilient communities in the process through mutual aid. Thanks to climate change, this storm is unfortunately only the beginning of an increasing trend of natural disasters hitting large urban areas. We hope that we can provide a blueprint for how to generate a rapid response in the face of such emergencies. All power to the people,"

said Lopi LaRoe, artist and Occupy organizer.

“Corporate power contributed to this disaster, and people-power will get us out of it. Without climate change, Sandy would not have been the storm it was. The fossil fuel corporations have wrecked our climate and now our homes, and it’s well past time for us to work together to fix this problem. Building a stronger movement that cares for each other is one of many steps we need to take in the coming years.”

said Duncan Meisel of 350.org.

OMG - as if Sandy was not bad enough - now all of you along the East Coast must get ready for a predicted NorEaster. Hang tough - do what preparation that you can.

this is brilliant. keep the political cheap shots out and you will gain massive goodwill. regular people doing great work. the biggest problem with climate change credibility is the fact that the messengers are usually not credible.

The bottom line: Big government is seldom the same as effective government. That applies as much to disaster relief as to anything else.

We all face a huge challenge to create global sustainability, starting with our own health, fitness and well-being. Be smart - Keep Fit! ;)

The term "Climate Change Disaster" needs to be used more often.

In my state we've had warm winters when it's usually cold (that part is kind of nice) but we've had an insanely long drought, wildfires, intense heat, agriculture is down in many areas, lakes dried up... and all less than a year from massive floods that destroyed farms, towns, and homes.

Climate change is real. We need to call these events by their real name and work on ways to solve the problem.

Romney will dismantle FEMA and the EPA  (= more $ for the people/corporations). Leave it to the states, he says. Yeah, sure. Maybe he'll make dams out of used etch-a-sketches? What we need is a tidal wave ...of voters..... to sweep these kind of guys out of power. This is the BEST way to help the victims of present and future Sandys. AND yourself.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZENtH3psXl4&feature=player_embedded

And a tidle wave of people in the streets to tell all politicians to create change that benefits the 99%!

Why does New York need "people powered relief" when there's FEMA and the Red Cross? Isn't the Federal Government taking care of all of this? Weren't they prepared at week in advance to bring aid and relief to the people who would be affected by the hurricane?

Seems like the PEOPLE of the STATES are coming forward and actually helping these people faster and more appropriately than the "government" institutions have. Seems like the government of New York is busy posting cops and generators and water stations and food along the New York Marathon route for tomorrow, so they don't have the resources left over to help aid the poor, the hungry, the cold and the displaced.

The fact is that truckloads of donations, food, clothing, water-you know, the kind of stuff that Mitt Romney was MOCKED for pulling together-from regular private citizens-are reaching the affected neighborhoods SOONER than FEMA and they pulled it together in 24-48 hours. FEMA is supposed to be READY to step in at any moment and they STILL haven't reached every affected neighborhood.

This entire mess is one FABULOUS example of how ineffective and corrupted FEMA truly is, and why Romney's suggestion makes more and more sense all the time.
