Forum Post: Warmongers Everywhere - ‘US would give Israel unilateral support in Iran strike’ – Romney

Mitt Romney says the US would back an Israeli military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities under his administration. The US will support “any and all” measures to allay Iranian nuclear ambitions, the presidential candidate stated.

“We have a solemn duty and a moral imperative to deny Iran’s leaders the means to follow through on their malevolent intentions,” said the presumptive Republican candidate, addressing a 300-strong audience in Jerusalem. Romney is on an overseas tour to gain international laverage ahead of this fall's presidentials. He added that the US should not delude itself into thinking that “containment is an option.”

Prior to the speech, one of Romney’s aides told reporters that the presidential candidate would back a military strike against Iranian nuclear sites by Israel.

"If Israel has to take action on its own in order to stop Iran from developing that capability, the governor would respect that decision," said Romney’s national security aide, Dan Senor.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu voiced his support of Mitt Romney, saying he “strongly agreed” with his statements and “it is important to do everything in our power to prevent the ayatollahs from possessing nuclear weapons.”

While Romney shied away from any direct criticism of his competitor for the White House, he emphasized the threat of nuclear Iran had only worsened over the past five years. He said that diplomatic distance between the US and Israel could only serve to “embolden” the country’s adversaries.

In an appeal to Jewish voters in the US, Romney referred to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and said that it was the US government’s long-term plan to transfer their embassy there from Tel Aviv. Romney is currently trailing in popularity among US Jewish voters with 28 per cent to Obama’s 68 per cent according to a Gallup survey released on Friday. The Obama administration tries to avoid referring to the city as Israel’s capital given that the Palestinians also envisage the city as their future capital.

Military support already underway?

The Obama administration has already briefed the Israeli government on plans for a possible military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, reported an Israeli newspaper on Sunday, citing an anonymous US official. Israeli publication Haaretz alleged that National Security Advisor Tom Donilon had put forward the plans to PM Netanyahu earlier in July during his visit.

A senior Israeli official speaking on condition of anonymity dismissed Haaretz’s report as incorrect, while the US Embassy has refrained from commenting.

Both Israel and the US claim that Iran is enriching uranium for the purposes of developing nuclear weapons. The Obama administration has thus far sought to discourage the Israeli government from military action, preferring to use economic sanctions to isolate Iran. The Iranian government dismisses these claims and maintains that its nuclear program is purely for civilian ends.

Isreali war mongers (right wing), Have been putting enormous pressure on the American government to invade/attack Iran! Although not Isreali labor party (left wing), nor the majority of the Isreali people support more military action. Obviously, understandably the Isreali people are tired of war.

American war mongers (right wing) have been putting enormous pressure on the American government to invade/attack Iran! Although not American left wing, nor the majority of the American people support more military action. Obviously, understandably the American people are tired of war. Me too!

Fortunately, we are NOT invading/attacking Iran. Fortunately we have a leader who has resisted the pressure from the right wing. We should agitate for no attack and we should support all efforts to resist. Show our leaders and the right wing that resisting war mongerers pressure is not futile.

And for the record. I personally am against Iran getting a Nuclear weapon, Also, I am against Israel having nuclear weapons. In fact no one. Not the USA, Not China, Not Russia should have nuclear weapons!

They all should be destroyed, and abolished. I believe this Pres can start that process if we support those efforts.

Our leaders won't do it without the people agitating in large numbers continually for it.

It's the only way.

The fact that a presidential candidate is campaigning in a foreign country is appalling. But when no one brings up the obvious abnormality, it is a symptom of how blind we have become.

romney doesnt pay taxes? who told you? the same un named person that told reid? that same un named source said that obama had the lowest grades of anyone in harvards history.

[-] 1 points by frogmanofborneo (602) from New York, NY 11 years ago

Romney has to prove that he pays taxes. He showed 20 returns to McCain who turned around and said "hmmmmmm I think I need another candidate for VP." Now McCain is worried about the impact Adelson will have once he becomes an issue.

[-] 0 points by salta (-1104) 11 years ago

he doesnt have to prove he paid his taxes. this the same silly ploy that rather used on bush,....make an outrageous statement , after all its the seriousness of the charge, not whether its true. someone said the obama had the lowest grade of anyone that ever went to harvard. let him prove otherwise.

Whatever you might want to say about Obama he has demonstrated intellect. No one cares if he graduated last out of Harvard. Getting into Harvard without a rich connected family is an accomplishment that anyone would be proud of. In any class someone graduated last. So the fuck what? Romney could shut up all the talk about his IRA account, his Caymans and Swiss accounts, whether he paid at all. He showed his returns to McCain, why not to the people whose trust he seeks.

Lost on him (photo: davelawrence8/flickr)

Senate Majority Harry Reid made waves when he claimed a source connected to Bain Capital informed him it is likely Mitt Romney didn’t pay taxes for several years while at Bain. We don’t know if this is true. There is probably no legal way even for Reid to prove it since Mitt Romney refuses to release more tax returns.

The attack though has clearly gotten under Romney’s skin because it is the type of claim that is believable. Romney, a man who took most of his income at the lower capital gains rate and uses numerous offshore accounts, likely did pay a shockingly low tax rate for several years.

While defending himself Romney demanded Reid provide proof to back up his claims, but the irony is lost on him. From the Huffington Post:

“Well, it’s time for Harry to put up or shut up. Harry’s going to have to describe who it is he spoke with because of course, that’s totally and completely wrong,” Romney told Hannity in a radio interview. “It’s untrue, dishonest, and inaccurate. It’s wrong. So I’m looking forward to have Harry reveal his sources and we’ll probably find out it’s the White House. Look, the Obama campaign is going to do everything in its power to try and talk about anything besides the president’s record. Home prices, median American incomes, gasoline prices, 23 million underemployed or unemployed.

The simple fact is that Romney has made claims about his tax returns that he refuses to provide proof for. The position of the Romney campaign is that the everyone should simply trust what Romney says about his taxes even though Romney won’t verify them by releasing his returns. Now that Reid is the one making claims about Romney’s tax returns, though, Romney ironically claims it is totally unacceptable for someone to make statements unless they are willing to provide the proof to back them up.

In the same interview Romney attacks Reid for not being willing to “put up” proof to back up his claims, Romney makes his own counterclaims that Reid is not telling the truth, while he himself is still refusing to “put up” the simple piece of proof that would show if Reid is wrong.

I wonder how long it will be before Reid will respond by saying if Romney is going to call him a liar, Romney needs to “put up or shut up” by releasing his returns to prove Reid is wrong.

you're laughably pathetic. obama an intellect? 57 states? austrian language? treat someone with asthma with a breathalyzer? calling olympic participants " olympiads"? the "bomb " that fell on pearl harbor?, "The middle east is obvioulsy an issue that had plagued the region for centuries", burns up 9,000 gallons of fuel on earth day, expects to be president for "eight to ten years", reads off the prompeter "navy CORPSE man", signs the guest book in westminster abby with the wrong year, thinks europe is a country, a self proclaimed white sox fan that cant name a single player and loves "cominskey park". i said that obama had the lowest grades ever at harvard and you fell for it, just like you fell for reids babbling about romney not paying taxes.

Obama had to be plenty smart to get to where he is. His daddy didn't do it for him. AS for our back and forth really if I were the moderator your user name and ip would be banned from this forum. Consider this conversation closed.

Someone disagrees with you, therefore they should be banned. Isn't that how Mao got rid of dissent? Except he really banned them.

Grow a pair and have a debate.

[-] -3 points by salta (-1104) 11 years ago

obama has the gotten where he is due to the elimination of his opponents. smart? no . why should i be banned? your lack of tolerance is showing as is you horror of facts, as evidenced by your not responding to the long list of obama " gaffes" otherwise known as stupidity.

Unsubstantiated rumors can stain a reputation almost as deeply as hard facts. The people who spread them don't realize they become stained as well.

you think harry reid cares?

Only if the voters of Nevada are paying attention.
