Conservatives Panic Over ‘U.N.-Affiliated’ Election Monitors

[Oh, SNAP!]

Polling board members in Arlington, Virginia, demonstrate touch screen voting machines to OSCE observers in 2004

Conservative blogs and news media are all buzzing about a team of international election monitors coming to observe the presidential elections in November. The observers are arriving at the invitation of the State Department and the behest of a number of civil rights organizations, including the NAACP, ACLU, and others.

The latter groups’ call for an international team to keep an eye on the U.S. elections focuses particularly on states that have enacted strict voter I.D. laws and other curtailing of voting rights. An NAACP delegation visited the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland in September to bring attention to the issue. The NAACP’s move, and the idea of foreign presence in the U.S. to observe elections, has infuriated many on the right.

The response at the state-level is varying. Alabama Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard is, in protest of the monitors’ presence preparing legislation to have all poll watchers in Alabama hold U.S. citizenship. “It’s bad enough that Alabama remains trapped under the provisions of the Voting Rights Act,” Hubbard said “So we certainly don’t need anyone from the United Nations coming into our state and meddling in our elections, as well.”

Catherine Engelbrecht of True the Vote appeared on Fox News on Monday claiming that the monitors’ presence was actually intended to prevent and discourage U.S. voters from exercising their rights. Fox’s Megyn Kelly readily agreed, stressing the left-leaning nature of the civil rights groups, seemingly unaware of the State Department’s role in inviting the monitors. It’s worth mentioning that True the Vote, itself a Tea Party group voter suppression effort, is currently under investigation for possible criminal conspiracy. They would never do that, because it's not fair or the christian thing to do.

This is interesting - we have United States citizens callin in the UN because they don't trust US citizens.

These are people that need to be watched because they will be the ones who want the UN to void our constitution and have this country under the control of the UN.

It must be really interesting that we have anti-democracy RepubliCons actively suppressing Votes in various key states and districts.

Especially interesting that these anti-constitution RepubliCons have a record of stealing at least two recent elections.

Extra specially interesting that when these anti-American Republicons seize power and their fascist redistribution to the top 1% policies crash the world's economy, the world would really like to make sure that doesn't happen again!

And most interesting of all that the rest of the world is not as misinformed with nonstop RW Hate and Lie propaganda as we are ~ except for Somalia, Burma and North Korea.

More minor politicians that are too dumb to realize the people that own this system are the same ones that are in the UN.

Must be a slow news day.

Either that, or the MSM doesnt want to cover the real news.

Jay Walljasper can write whatever he chooses. Bottom line is that neither one will address:

  • Monetary policy
  • Foreign policy
  • Tax policy
  • Trade policy

And Obama wont push for gay rights because of certain factors that he is not willing to stand up to.

As for the four I listed, Im not talking about skimming over the top of each issue as the two do. Im talking about commone sense, which would be viewed as radical by most, changes. Shit that matters.

The whole thing is being propped up by the fed right now, because these two parties are bought and fixing the issues goes against what they profit off of. The Fed is running out of options, and maybe when they do, DC will magically snap out of it, and decide to side with the people instead of the money.

Dont hold your breathe.

Dems aren't as dumb as I thought. Lot's of people are going to get all 'Red Dawn' over this.

"Lot's of people are [going to get] all 'Red Dawn' over this."

Tell that to Gabby Giffords.

I live in North Milwaukee. All I can say is good luck to the guys with blue hats. I'm OK with this but I don't know why. Here's a tip for the UN- watch yourself in those small Wisconsin towns.

The fertilizer of RW Hate and Lies in the dark grows some poisonous mushrooms of ignorance and violence. Time to move forward and leave the dark ages behind us, not go back. Considering the massive Republicon Voter suppression assaults, if the UN is willing to help we can use it.

This is hysterical - they're sending UN representatives to police us? Are they going to be armed? Will they wear UN badges so we can identify them? Will they be big and strong and mean? Will they look like Dolph Lundgren?

Obama can bow to the UN all he wants, no American will. What if we police these freaky foreigners right out of our state?

By the way, on Nov 6 I'm taking Big Bird to the voting booths with me, he wants to vote, too. Seriously.

You'd be funny if you weren't serious ~ liar or ignoramus neither one is funny considering the consequences.

The UN Anti-Election-Fraud Squad will be fitted with full body armor, pepper spray, assault weaponry and armored vehicle back up, exactly like the Anti-OWS-Protest-Police were.

The UN is an American invention and institution on American soil.

A good mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a neofascist RW Zombie brain is already wasted.

good. it's about time, objective people watch the vote tallyers here.

[-] -3 points by yobstreet (-575) 11 years ago

They won't be permitted to enter; they won't be permitted to observe; they definitely will not be permitted to tally. And if they don't bring a Federal army with them, they'll be lucky if we don't leave them bleeding in the parking lot.

Cool, I hate the UN; let's rock and roll.
