Tonight at the most prestigious theater chain in Hollywood, right in the heart of Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard, the legendary Arclight Theater, will screen the anti-Occupy Wall Street blockbuster "The Dark Knight Rises" no less than 15 times before 1 a.m. They can check out the 12:01 a.m. showing ... or the 12:05 a.m. showing ... or the 12:06 a.m. showing ... or even the 12:10 a.m. screening. That's plenty of ways to watch Batman (Christian Bale) square off against Bane (Tom Hardy), a revolutionary using the kind of class warfare rhetoric OWS brought to the public discourse to take down Gotham City. The city's famously liberal dwellers may be shocked to see the year's most anticipated film includes an all-out attack on their precious 99 percent club, the same one President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi embraced so heartily last year. They probably won't like seeing their ideology cast as the latest Bat villain, nor their already discredited plan to use Bane as a stand-in for Mitt Romney fall apart. They'll simply bite their collective tongues as the ticket money starts rolling in.

I think it's remarkable to see a major studio film that actually portrays a revolutionary scenario and talks about class warfare, which are two things that almost never appear in capitalist pop culture (at least not since the crisis of the 1970s when there was more space for social critique in Hollywood cinema). The Dark Knight Rises seems to acknowledge systemic inequality and injustice, even if it portrays a demagogue hijacking legitimate grievances. That being said, the politics of the film are pretty muddled and can certainly be interpreted as conservative. The gunman who opened fire in a Colorado movie theater shortly after midnight Thursday was armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and two pistols, officials said.
While much remains unclear about the shooting – which took place 30 minutes from Columbine High School where 13 people were shot to death in 1999 - it is likely to reinvigorate the debate over gun laws.
In Colorado, as it stands, people are allowed to have handguns in their cars, businesses, and homes, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Here are some highlights from the State Patrol’s primer on the state’s gun laws:
Colorado allows people to “possess a handgun in a dwelling, place of business, or automobile.” But they cannot “carry the weapon concealed while transporting it into your home, business, hotel room, etc.” Colorado allows a person to carry a firearm in a vehicle, loaded or unloaded, if its use is for lawfully protecting that person’s property or another person’s property. Concealed weapons permits can be obtained in the county in which a person lives. Colorado prohibits gun registration.
