There is way too much spam on this forum. Any meaningful ideas quickly drown in a sea of spam and flame wars. Trolls contaminate the forum with disinformation. Can't we start filtering the inputs? Why not charge users $1.00 to post a comment? That would filter out the frivolity and you can use the money to finance the movement.

Yea, I know what you Trolls are going to say. This comment just constitutes more Spam. Go sit under a bridge and eat some rats, Troll.

Using the principles established into law under Citizens United, voting will be based solely on money.

Cool, it's like a poll tax kinda!

LOL, charge $1.00 and have it go to who? the people using your donation money for expensive Hotels?

Part of learning is knowing what others think and how they operate. Cutting through the chaff is something we all need to know how to do. Besides, I find it difficult to know what is spam and what is not. Charging a dollar would tarnish the whole concept. Live and let spam. Which reminds me, there also is a whole lot of talk about spam. Eliminate the complaints and the attention and they don't take up as much space.

How about just some normal moderation, like every other forum on the internet does? Nobody else would tolerate this shit. "Censorship" is like the battle cry of the trolls, everyone on the Internet knows this, but here it seems like the trolls cry it and everyone runs away and lets them have their way.

So if someone disagrees with the majority then they are automatically a troll. And censorship is only if they don't agree with you?

[-] 1 points by Edgewaters (912) 12 years ago

Do you always put words in people's mouths or just on Sundays? You know what they say about assumptions and asses.

All I'm calling for is the same type of moderation used literally everywhere else on the Internet, as I explicitly stated. You seem to be opposed. Why would that be?

[-] 0 points by MVSN (768) from Stockton, CA 12 years ago

Perhaps because this site is part of a leaderless movement that has no core and no consensus of it's core political beliefs. And moderation varies immensely between websites. Who will determine this level of censorship you want?

[-] 1 points by Edgewaters (912) 12 years ago

The moderators of the website. Isn't that sort of obvious?

The website is just a website. It isn't OWS, just an affiliate. It has moderators. They should do their job. We have threads here about people selling TVs and so on, as well as many that violate the forum rules.

Over and above that. It's pretty obvious that certain individuals are attempting to subvert/hijack the site and turn it into Ron Lawl 2012 Campaign Headquarters. If not by moderation, how do you propose avoiding this? Or is that something you support?

[-] 1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

I agree with you, but the problem is the moderators are doing this job without pay. It's impossible to filter out all the spam. People can use proxy servers to hide their IP to escape banning. You ban them, then they just come back and spam some more.

This website is open source. Unfortunately, jart has not received much help. She's the sole programmer here, and she is also a very busy Occupy protester. If you take a look at the recent history of commits, you'll see she isn't working on the site on a daily basis: https://github.com/jart/occupywallst/commits/master/

This is a community effort, and if you wish to help, you can do one of the following:

  1. Provide pull requests for the website. You can help create filters for spam. Jart programmed a few, but there is a lot of work left to do in this area.
  2. Apply to become a moderator so you can actively help reduce spam.
  3. Report spam to moderators so they can delete it. This saves them time as they don't have all day to read all the posts.

Open source projects are only as good as the effort the community is willing to put into them. Complaining that the volunteers are not doing their job is fruitless. You need to participate and become a volunteer yourself. There's nothing free in this world.

Perhaps by not censoring the speech of those that disagree with you.

[-] 1 points by Edgewaters (912) 12 years ago

Oh, I see, we're on the merry-go-round. All the way back to step 1 when you don't have an answer. When we get to the point you don't have an answer, back to step 1 again. Round and round we go. How rational.

[-] 1 points by Infowar (295) 12 years ago

That would be censorship of the poor.

they already pay all the taxes- and are not represented, by this government-- its only right that they pay a posting tax. thrasymaque

Nice touch! I like how you signed the comment with my name. Next time, use a capital T to make an ever better forgery.

And you are the ultimate arbiter of who is a troll? Who appointed you to this post?

[-] 0 points by SpartacusTheSlave (60) from Las Vegas, NV 12 years ago

Are you, MVSN, the ultimate arbiter of who asks: "And you are the ultimate arbiter of who is a troll?" Who appointed YOU to this post?

[-] 0 points by MVSN (768) from Stockton, CA 12 years ago

Sigh.... Good one Einstein...

[-] 0 points by richardkentgates (3269) 12 years ago

who is spamming? could you list all of the days spam for us in the OP please?

[-] 0 points by SpartacusTheSlave (60) from Las Vegas, NV 12 years ago

If you don't have $1.00, how the Hell are your reading this on the Internet? Internet is not free. Well Hell, Congress is going to wipe out these Occupy websites anyway, after they pass SOPA.

[-] 1 points by CrossingtheDivided (357) from Santa Ysabel, CA 12 years ago

NetZero offers like 18 hours of free internet per Month to anyone with a phone connection. . .but I see your point.

[-] 0 points by Glaucon (296) 12 years ago

I have $1.00, but not $1.00 for each comment I want to make. If you post 5 times a day, that's already $150.00 a month. For some people that's expensive. Personally, I'm interested in everyone's opinions, not only the opinions of those who can afford to express them.

[-] 0 points by SpartacusTheSlave (60) from Las Vegas, NV 12 years ago

Yes, that's my point. You will be more succinct and efficient if it costs you. Just like when you drive your car.

[-] 0 points by Glaucon (296) 12 years ago

Interesting point. I can't agree though. People would just move to another forum. I couldn't even afford one post per day which would be $30 dollars a month.

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

$1.00 per post? That gives the advantage to richer people. Isn't that exactly what Occupy is against?

[-] 0 points by SpartacusTheSlave (60) from Las Vegas, NV 12 years ago

That's the spirit ! Come on Trolls !

Ows.com is a soros spawned flypaper op FOR the hasbarats commieanarchistANONwanabes - to discredit thr movement, keep the demo(no)crazy splitting the REPUBLIC, redundant parallel processing in little walled-garden culdesacs. Stats and trends are certainly being baked into a nice little pie by some billion$thinktank so WE can be consumed kosherlike at the next bilderberg meeting.

So instead of worrying about it-read the history of why we are here. http://occupywallst.org/forum/interesting-read-about-the-constitution-and-corpor/ Educate the sincere, dish the trolls with wisdom and without anger, let them show up as the shills they are because THEY have no power here. Rock on!!!
