A video clip is raising new questions about whether police used excessive force against Occupy Oakland participants during the fracas after last week's general strike.

Re. OWS & on the 4th of July - who the hell would stinkle a news / info comment like that ?! I have just twinkled it back to +1 but Anti-OWS corporate shills clearly still abound here. Ho-hum & from your link:

''Brooke Anderson, 33, was awarded $20,000. She recounted her ordeal to the Guardian on Wednesday:

  • "I was there on October 25 to support the protest and we were there for several hours singing and chanting. It was a really peaceful protest. Towards the end of the evening the police officers moved towards us with metal barriers and I was knocked to the ground. I tried to get up and leave but I was held by police officers who twisted my arm behind my back in a very painful position. "I was crying and screaming and my friends asked police to let go and several of them were hit and arrested."

''Supporters of the protesters created this video, which contains footage of Anderson's arrest :

Thanx for your important comment, link & update. Occupy Wall Street - because ... what's the option ?!

fiat lux et fiat justitia ...

Thanks for this post. I Speak against these Officers. I condemn the Federal Government in this action even if the influence was only Training of local Officers. The Federalization of Police or the Militarization of Police is a problem. We train thousands of guys... and what they are going to sit around and comb their hair????

You Young Guys... Get used to speaking out against the Police & Government. The Stasi State, the Stasi Police state is not going to get better. Things will only get worse as far as police powers go.

Lets start a post with action ideas that they can consider with their newfound inflow. I would say first though, they need to go purchase a building or get a 5 lease on something to create that central location.

We really need to get back to the issues at hand. Occupy lost momentum because of two major things. First, there was too much focus on the process of direct democracy. And, second, the internal army, the police, shutting down all the occupations killed momentum.

However, the issues are still at hand and any real revolution begins with the festering of those issues. Focus there. Focus on low wages, eroding workers' rights, our total loss of privacy, degradation of the environment, massive tuition for university, endless wars, hoarding of profits at the top, etc. etc. etc. We sure have enough issues to get this thing moving again.

Don't worry, whatever you do, don't worry. The groups involved in this debate all know that they alone are right, settling things as amicably as possible will probably be easier once escalating rounds of violence begin. Probably to the advantage of the people without the authority position.

Thanks for posting this video link, everyone should take the time to view what is happening. Everyone should protest American Media Non-Coverage ( NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS, etc. ). Yes they are corporations. Why should we be shown social uprisings around the world, but not here at home. We should invite foreign media to cover what our own media does not, social inequality and oppression is not something that just happens elsewhere in the world. Please everyone with a camera continue to record save and post your videos. There may come a day when some of these videos will be useful in a court of law.

I don't believe it. On top of everything else the article says there was another veteran beaten by police so badly he needed surgery (Kayvan Sabeghi).

One has to question the actions of the police in these cases. The video is clear that there was no provoction for shooting the guy. Those people responsible for allowing this to happen within the city government and the police force should be brought up on criminal charges or at least have a civil suit filed against them.

The danger here is that others in charge of police, and individual police, will see a lack of repercussions for this as permission to adopt the same tactics and that will push us over the boundry into a real police state condition. Whether or not you agree with this particular movement, you should recognize the danger to the very idea of freedom and our constitutional rights.

"Black Block" are provocateurs in costume

There is no such thing as a fan base for the German Baader-Meinhof Gang in America. That goes back to the 1960s and 1970s.

Shane O'Sullivan made a thorough documentary titled Children of the Revolution. The participants were unhinged at best.

What you are getting is provocateurs/arsonists/vandals with no connection to the OWS movement. Young males, short hair, arriving after protests (11 P.M.) with incendiaries and metal tools.

Oakland PD had no preparation for dealing with provocateurs as a gang operating apart from normal protesters.

Same situation as the US Air & space Museum riot on October 8th.

That was incited by provocateurs. 100%. We've identified the two main individuals.

The first comment sums it up: "I cant believe I was standing 5 ft from a row of cops brandishing batons, gas launchers and non-lethal shotguns cops who just gave me numerous lawful orders to disperse as required by state law and I was hit with a non-lethal projectile. Amazing! The brutality of the Pigs! I should be allowed to do whatever i want, whenever i want!

What qualifies the 'force expert' who sits in his corner office all day turning the kiddies into good little liberals as an 'expert'? When he mounts a shield and faces a few thousand 'entitled' brats with fire bombs and bricks and can come up with a 'sensitive' way of getting them to stop vandalizing property and creating an atmosphere of anarchy, maybe then his opinions will be considered. Until that day...."

[-] 2 points by buphiloman (840) 12 years ago

Try watching the damn video before you make uniformed comments like this one. There were no "kiddies" throwing "bricks and firebombs" just a dude with a camera who never gets within 20 feet of the Police. You live in a police state. Wake up. Deal with it.

People used to die during protests. Now a leg shot with a rubber bullet is the big hoop-la. Pussies.

It's shocking that OWS would defile a public statue like that. Savages

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

This could be big for Occupy Oakland. If they can convince the public that both the cops and the block bloc are using force while they do not and never plan to, it could really turn heads towards the Occupy movement. This is one of those things you have to milk. What a great strategy to film the cops. It intimidates them, and they are bound to slip up. Each time they do, +1 for the occupiers.

I though Oakland would be the downfall of Occupy, but I'm starting to think it might be the jolt that moves it up to the next notch.

The only way to use to much force against OWShitters is too kill them, then drag their corpses around.

[-] 1 points by darrenlobo (204) 12 years ago

Maybe you can sing the Horst Wessel lied or us while you're at it.
