Forum Post: Pentagon Finds Perils for U.S. if Israel Were to Strike Iran

A leaked war games scenario appears intended to weaken the push for war with Iran by Israel and its Lobby in the United States.

WASHINGTON — A classified war game held this month to assess the American military’s capabilities to respond to an Israeli attack on Iran forecast that the strike would lead to a wider regional war, which could draw in the United States and leave hundreds of Americans dead, according to American officials.

The officials said the war game was not designed as a rehearsal for American military action — and they emphasized that the exercise’s results were not the only possible outcome of a real-world conflict. But the game has raised fears among top American planners that it may be impossible to preclude American involvement in any escalating confrontation with Iran, the officials said. In the debate among policymakers over the consequences of any possible Israeli attack, that reaction may give stronger voice to those within the White House, Pentagon and intelligence community who have warned that a strike could prove perilous for the United States.

The results of the war game were particularly troubling to Gen. James N. Mattis, who commands all American forces in the Middle East, Persian Gulf and Southwest Asia, according to officials who either participated in the Central Command exercise or who where briefed on the results and spoke on condition of anonymity because of its classified nature. When the exercise had concluded earlier this month, according to the officials, General Mattis told aides that an Israeli first-strike would likely have dire consequences across the region and for United States forces there. The two-week war game, called “Internal Look,” played out a narrative in which the United States found it was pulled into the conflict after Iranian missiles struck a Navy warship in the Persian Gulf, killing about 200 Americans, according to officials with knowledge of the exercise. The United States then retaliated by launching its own strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

It would be hard (given how much technology has advanced since the 60's) for Israel to pull off a "false flag" attack on a US war ship, or for that matter, for the Iranians to successfully hit a US war ship with a missile strike (given our missile defense systems). I'd be more concerned about US troops in Afghanistan if the shit hits the fan (but being out of Iraq certainly helps, since our troops were within range of Iranian artillery, for which there is no real defense besides duck and cover).

Iraq wasn't our neighbor either, nor Afghanistan.

There isn't much love lost between the US military and Israel. Chairman Joint Chiefs Adm. Mike Mullen shut the door on an Israel attack back in '08 when he flew to Tel Aviv to warn Israel’s military establishment how “important” it was that “history not repeat itself ”—referring to Israel’s deliberate attack on the USS Liberty in June, 1967. The Establishment media blacked out the event (in which 34 American men were killed) for decades—and still does.

Given the fact that this brazen two-hour attack upon the United States has been hushed up for 41 years, the reason for Mullen’s meeting is obvious—someone within the intelligence or military apparatus of the United States has concluded that Israel is planning a “USS Liberty Part II,” meaning an attack on a U.S. ship, most likely in the Persian Gulf, leading to a massive loss of life to be blamed on Iran.

As was intended in 1967, when Israel attacked the Liberty, angry Americans would demand the “obliteration” of the guilty party, the false identity of which the Jewish media establishment in America would provide. And while all players involved have been tight-lipped about the particulars of this meeting, Mullen’s impromptu trip to Israel and subsequent discussion was in effect a stern warning to Israel to “Not even think about it.”

And I don't think they will because if they attempt it, American forces will shoot their planes down en route over Iraq. With the stakes as high as the odds are long, the commanders calling the shots will do whatever they have to to avert a catastrophe even greater than Iraq - and the chance to settle an old score with Israel will prove irresistible - and they won't be awaiting orders from headquarters.

The dog and pony show between Bibi and Obama is just a shakedown for more US aid in exchange for political peace from the Lobby.

Thank you for that really interesting info on the Liberty. I had been told about the Liberty verbally a long time ago but could not find any information otherwise. So the story does have some basis then!

Indeed it does. The reason you and most Americans are unaware of the attack is because the subject is taboo in high government and media circles. Even to mention it brings about instant condemnation as an "antisemite".

For McMullen to broach the subject took balls and probably took the Israelis by surprise.

For a good account on what happened to the Liberty and her crew, check out James Bamford's book, Body of Secrets.

Israel tried a false flag attack on America before in the 1967 war, they may try again. The aim then was to blame the attack on Egypt and drag us into the war, now the attack would be blamed on Iran.

Every American should know about this.

I'm afraid that if Israel attacks Iran, the blowback would be worse than they'd want to deal with.

Netanyahu needs treatment for his anxiety and paranoia. Iran's a rational player, but I'm not sure about Israel.

Well the veterans certainly do NOT want war - and nor apparently even the top military brass.

And most of the Chilean army was happy with Allende as leader. Pinochet played the fool until he got his assured US support. Likewise in the USA itself - you only need one General Turgidson and he'll be posted to the command that matters.

Who by? Not by the Presidential patsy (who just has to say yes-we-can) but the true rulers of the country - like Hal [liburton] and the waco-flako Zionist majority (i.e. CHRISTIAN Zionists) who believe they are carrying out jebus's master-plan for mankind.

Whatever could have gotten into the minds of so many Jews that they would back Christian crazies like that?????? So sozzled on Zionism they can't see the fallout - not the nuclear fallout but the same Christian rabble in the wake of the US defeat in this war.

What will these all-American Christian rabble be looking for? Answer: Looking for a scapegoat! Looking to blame the J....

With people like Ron Paul or Lee Whitnum that keeps exposing the bad apples in the government, it is more difficult for them to get away with it.
