Method of Non-Violent Protest and Persuasion #198: "Dual sovereignty and parallel government"
Humanity in Libya and Syria formed parallel governments in open competition with the recognized regime. The Libyan NTC is now in place and the Syrian National Council is poised to enter. They even made different flags from the recognized national government, and have changed, or are changing, the official name of the country--from "Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahirya" to simply "Libya", and the SNC probably aims to replace the name "Syrian Arab Republic" with simply "Syria".
Here in the heart of the Empire, why not form a parallel governance, bring a new flag and a new name, and peacefully overthrow the United States?

One of the goals of the Occupy Movement is to structurally end the Corporate State through the enactment of the Separation of Wealth (or Business) and State. This will mean the Occupied Economy would be distinct from the Occupied Governance, with Occupied Businesses flying a Solidarity Economic flag, and Occupied Governance organs flying a Democratic Rights flag. And those civil society organizations and cultural/arts/educational initiatives who ally with the Occupy Governance would constitute the third power: the Occupied Socio-Cultural sector flying a flag symbolizing a Diversity Culture. The idea is tri-sector regime change in America.
Who is with this Idea?
There HAS to be something better - many are working and thinking this over. Please engage in groups, forums such as this, etc. We CAN and MUST make this Worldwide Revolution happen ! We are not JUST dreamers - we are slowly making this happen - worldwide and we CAN do it non-violently. There may be something better, there is never a guarantee when you're looking into an unknown. You mention the Iron Law though, do you believe oligarchy is inevitable?
If you wish to test the validity of the Iron Law, you need two obvious things. A better concept and people following you (or at least agreeing with you) to get it put into effect. Parallel governments in the United States already exist. They are often extreme right wing, but anyone can say they have formed a "nation". Most are laughably small in number and it's only their arsenals that make the authorities take any notice.
Numbers are a serious problem. Currently I don't see the support needed to make a parallel nation much more then a sad joke. Looking only at the US, compare the largest Occupy group with the population of the city it's in. You can call any group you want a nation, making it actually work requires more support then you currently have.
One fundamental to achieve sovereignty is for Occupy to start printing its own money, and getting others to use it.
Until we can break free from the dollar money trap we can never be truly free.

i do not feel that oligarchy is inevitable IF everyone is centered on sustainability with fiscal responsibility. Maybe direct democracy in smaller groups and representational democracy for larger groups with term limits on any/all elected representatives ? This plus publicly funded elections just might counteract that iron law of oligarchy. USA economy - like what we have - capitalism with a mix of socialism - obviously not the best system, so how can we improve it ?
Before we modify Democracy, we need to get control of it first. We have to get the non person influence out of congress. If the people don't have influence, none of our reforms will ever happen.
We can improve the American Economy by making all businesses, labor unions, and financial institutions have their own field of action--an Economic Forum and entrepreneurial Economic Manager equivalent to the political Congress and President. This sovereign American Economy will have its own capital and embassies, and will issue the currency. Economic corporations (including unions) will fly an Economic flag distinct from the American Government flag:

In my opinion there is no way to overthrow a government with a peaceful protest, let alone America. Consider when the south tried to retreat from the union and the civil war

I ask anyone in this conversation who says this is impossible to consider: What is OWS trying to accomplish? Is the goal to enact a few laws to make Wall Street a bit more regulated? Is the goal to practice police-confrontation tactics in the hopes of making America a little more liberal?

In order for this to work the people in government would have to surrender. In America i can't see the government stepping down unless they had to. You would need tens of millions of protesters all refusing to work. You would have to cripple the economy for the government to even consider stepping down

As far as I know there is no stopping anyone or any orginization from doing it - Have at it - start getting it organized. Maybe it will get someones attention down the road and who knows - things might change.

Secession was tried and failed 147 years ago. The Feds are not going to tolerate a parallel government. Separate but equal is outlawed, or any other heading it might go under.
NO government tolerates a parallel government. That's why it's called "revolution", and why Gene Sharp wrote a detailed strategy book for non-violent regime change.
I read the book. His list of successful examples were real short. Things are going to have to get very worse in order to garner the support for something meaningful like a parallel govt.
