Forum Post: martial arts, yoga , and meditation not guns in the schools.

This content is user submitted and not an official statement

Many people proclaim the character building and personal growth benefits of martial arts, the physical health and mind body connection developed through yoga, and the mental clarity and focus achieved through meditation. I don't really hear these things about guns.

agreed,. they remove music and physical education and push military propaganda on the kids these days. Culture must be remade into something human instead of this mindless corpo-military drone system.

[-] 1 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

oh don't even get me started on the military recruiters and rotc bullshit. i am an adult student(34) at a major university (university of memphis) and they have a very obvious presence on campus. every time i see them doing some activity on campus i feel like going on a rant with a blow horn.

[-] 1 points by jph (2652) 11 years ago

Do it!

Public voicing of our concerns, and open opposition to those things we know are wrong, are what help others realize that they too have these same concerns and oppose these same wrongs. Just be respectful, we can be angry and respectful, and get out positions out into the culture.

[-] -2 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

Why are you upset by the presence of the ROTC? Do they harass you? Are they stalking you?

[-] 3 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

well manipulating young men and women into thinking that the armed services are an honorable and exciting career path seems to really get under my skin. maybe i just don't like the idea of more kids being used as cannon fodder.

[-] -3 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

have you ever spoken with ROTC people? Have they spoken with you? You do realize that a career can be had in the armed forces, , a skill learned. Most commercial pilots learned to fly in the service. But beside that, by saying that your fellow students are being manipulated , you give them no credit to be able to think for themselves. choose for themelves. what are you studying in school?

[-] 4 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

civil/environmental engineering. you can have all of those things with out being a cog in the machine of death.

[-] -3 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

" a cog in the machine of death" Those " cog(s)" liberated europe from the fascist stranglehold of hitler. hitler had big plans after he and his allies conquered the world. one was the division of the USA between japan , germany and italy. Without those " cog(s)" that stopped him, you probably wouldnt be alive.

[-] 2 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

the war that the banks financed. you know both sides. fuck man do some reading. without american corporate support their is no nazi death machine.

[-] -3 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

america is the recognized leader of the free world, without a strong military the usa is at a great security risk.

[-] 2 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

dude that was 30 years ago it is not the case now.

[-] -1 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

wrong dude, the usa still is the recognized leader of the free world

[-] 2 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

leader? the only things we lead in are debt, drug addiction, economic, and moral decay, mental disorders, imprisoning people, bombing people, and stifling dissent.

[-] -1 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

none of that stops millions of people.legal and illegal from coming to the US for a better life.

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Help me out here. I can't seem to recall the last time the USA was invaded by a foreign force.

Who was the force?

Neolibe(R)tarians excluded, of course.

[-] -2 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

200 years ago, the british and they havent been back . i dont agree with all the wars,......or "conflicts" that the usa has been involved in but that doesnt negate the fact that strong military is a necessity , not an option.

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Fine strong military - keep em at home - ready to defend the country against invasion. Meanwhile while at home they can be incorporated ( really not a bad word ) into renewing rebuilding improving our infra-structure = roads - bridges - power plants - wind turbine or solar energy farms - building sea walls or relocating housing off of flood plains or making them livable with regular flooding - etc etc etc etc.

[-] -3 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

those are jobs for the private sector.

[-] 1 points by Gillian (1842) 11 years ago

The DOD is an endless hole of wasted taxpayer money. It blows my mind how much they inflate the price of everything just to secure funds for the next budget. DOD is a buffet for anyone who wants to funnel millions into their own pockets via subcontractors. We don't take care of our soldiers like we used to, we don't even take care of them when they are at war. We just drug them and their kids so they'll tolerate injustices against them. I was a contractor for the DOD and was used to spend their money on a huge construction project that was torn up 3 days after I completed the project. They have absolutely no respect for money or their jobs and they sit around sending dirty emails to each other all day and eating donuts. As much money as I could make, I will NEVER work for them ever again.
My neighbor went to Kuwait, sat on his ass for an entire year doing absolutely nothing and now he's loaded and took retirement. He laughs about it. He deliberately used the military to secure his future but he has absolutely no concern about his country or any country for that matter. He's all about himself.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

U Bet - but there is no reason that the military could not be teachers as well as implementers/trainers while on the job - individuals cycle in and out of the military - give them good private sector skills - while training the military to be a positive force in the world.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

They charge WAY too much.

This way would save zillions of tax payer dollars.

Besides, the "private sector" are the ones refusing to pay their fair share of taxes.

SCREAMING and yelling over every single dime, while the country falls into a shambles..

[-] -2 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

the job of the armed forces is the defense of the USA. they are trained for that and train at it.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

200+ years ago, WE were the invading force.

PS: We "won", but that doesn't answer my question.

It didn't seem like that hard a question either.

[-] 0 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

the war of 1812,...the british invaded the USA.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Get real

That was actually the last battle of the revolution......

Their navy didn't stand a chance against Perry on the lakes.

So you're expecting them to come back and try again?

[-] -1 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

cornwallis surrendered at yorktown in 1781. THAT was the end if the revolution.

[-] 1 points by FawkesNews (1290) 11 years ago

We have not been fighting WWII for a long long time now. Wake-up and smell the coffee.

[-] -1 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

without a strong armed forces the usa has no security.

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

That may well be so - but - that being said - we do not need to be sending our children all over the world in support of corpoRAT conquest/control.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Gymnastics - dance - wrestling - performance arts - choir etc etc etc - oh - yeah - morals ethics empathy fellowship etc etc etc ......................

Find feed and support positive desires. Will they ever be a stellar dancer or singer or wrestler etc etc etc - NO ? - But "THEY" have a spirit calling desire anyway? - GR8 - help them be the best they can be.

[-] 1 points by cJessgo (729) from Port Jervis, PA 11 years ago

These are all fine things.Guns are a tool.No more no less.I do not know why the NRA thinks we should have police in the schools. When my kids were in school the district wanted to put them in uniforms. This was twenty years or so ago. What a Jack assed idea then. And this idea of armed police or Teachers is just as bad. This is not about gun control it is people control.

So you believe that martial arts and yoga will defend young children from a murdering madman?

Please enlighten us all and illustrate just how you think this could work. Thanks, really appreciate it.

[-] 2 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

obviously you misunderstand. they would not have had to defend themselves because homeboy would have never gone maniacal had he been taught the life coping skills that martial arts, yoga, and meditation provide.

[-] -1 points by Shayneh (-482) 11 years ago

Well, your focus needs to be on "parenting" not Yoga, Martial Arts and meditation. Provide us with inof on how we can teach "parents to be more responsible for their children"? Any ideas?

[-] 2 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

martial arts, yoga, and meditation will help the parents become better people and thus better parents to.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Healthy mind in a healthy body.

[-] 1 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

ex-fucking-actly. even temperament, balanced judgement, and clarity of mind.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Confidence and control of ones physical abilities tied to proper reasons/reasoning for the need and use of self defense and in extension defense of others. Operating from a logical calm training/pre-consideration - not reacting in untrained panic.

[-] 1 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

and yes we need to reinvest in the arts and music big time in schools as well.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Yes - creative outlets - food for a healthy spirit. In the doing - one grows and does not diminish.

[-] 0 points by town (-374) 11 years ago

use the union dues to pay for it.

[-] 1 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

integrity, respect, the ability to deal with confrontation and rejection/loss. you know in other words a healthy, balanced, well adjusted human being.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

No sheep - but peaceful as circumstances permit - and not afraid to stand-up for what is right.

[-] -2 points by outlawtumor (-162) 11 years ago

I understand perfectly. You are not interested in dealing with reality but would rather waste time with fantasy and Utopian wet dreams.

[-] 2 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

so martial arts, yoga, and meditation don't teach valuable life skills and values that people today are in desperate need of? you small minded types are going to run this country into the ground.

[-] -2 points by outlawtumor (-162) 11 years ago

I'm sorry.

If you wish to talk about a complete other subject,by all means but I was under the impression the subject was protecting school children in their classrooms from another madman.

[-] 2 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

yes it is what about this are you having a hard time understanding?

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

In compliment :

http://occupywallst.org/forum/for-our-childrens-future/

To protect - we must also teach.

[-] -1 points by outlawtumor (-162) 11 years ago

Like I said I understand you perfectly, I'm just surprised you went of the tracks so quickly.

[-] 2 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

no, i don't think you do.

[-] 1 points by Theeighthpieceuv8 (-32) from Seven Sisters, Wales 11 years ago

I think so; this was about protecting children from madmen and you're encouraging the "downward facing dog" pose while humming to yourself. You're probably one of those wackjobs who seems to think we should no longer teach Jesus, too, aren't you?

[-] 1 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

we teach jesus? how come none of these so called christians do what he commanded?

[-] 1 points by Theeighthpieceuv8 (-32) from Seven Sisters, Wales 11 years ago

I think a lot of them do.

[-] 1 points by quantumystic (1710) from Memphis, TN 11 years ago

Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.--------------John 13:33-35

[-] 1 points by Theeighthpieceuv8 (-32) from Seven Sisters, Wales 11 years ago

It's not so much what others are doing but what we are doing: we need to set an example.

[-] -2 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

TSA/airport style security on ingress and egress.

Scanners, rubber gloves and all.

It would employ more folks and leave the corridors of the schools as safe as they could be............:)

Plus we could DEMAND all scanning equipment be union made in the good old USA, thus helping ease unemployment and wage issues.

Fuck the gun nutterz...........perhaps even literally...................:)

[-] 2 points by stevebol (1269) from Milwaukee, WI 11 years ago

So, outlaw, what's your response to people shooting firefighters? Enlighten us.

[-] -1 points by outlawtumor (-162) 11 years ago

Beyond the obvious sadness for the Fire Fighters and families. The anger at the piece of shit perps.

I certainly wouldn't advocate for the disarming of the American people or the further regulating and restriction of Constitutional rights freedoms.

There's no correlation between the two issues.

[-] -2 points by beautifulworld (23772) 11 years ago

Exactly right. Teach children about the beauty in the world and the joy they can find within themselves. Do not teach them fear and ugliness.

[-] 2 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

I don't really know how to think about this. I have been corrupted by alcohol for instance. I know alcohol, drinking to getting drunk, drinking to hang overs and headaches ... separates me from other people, make me want to lay in bed for example.

But in the 1950s while households might have had no idea that black people where beaten by police, suppressed & oppressed by Police, .... and I think up to 1970s the Detroit Police ruled with an Iron hand against the black population.

Perhaps we are talking about hiding our own Shadow. The shadow side is the side we don't want to look at. All of our secrets are hidden in the shadow. In the USA this means we hide all kinds of issue about sex within and outside of marriage, alcohol use in the family, drugs use in the family, physical abuse, sexual abuse, workaholic parents, obsessions within the family, overeating, body issues, sexual identity issues, gay memebers of the family or just the confusion about .... Seems like we can't deal with issues that are hidden in shadow.

How about national issues of shadow? Corporate Welfare. Tax Abatements for Corporations, ratings agency conflict of interest, Accounting firm conflicts of Interest, Off Balance sheet Transactions, Government Subsidies to fortune 500 companies, Corporate Lobbies, Foreign Agent Lobbies to Congress, Insider Trading by Congress, Conflict of Interest of Court Judges and Congress, Revolving Door to Industry from Government Employees responsible for Regulating them.... Bribes, Promotions, Sexual Favors...

These are all Ugly Part of the USA.

[-] -1 points by beautifulworld (23772) 11 years ago

Absolutely. The ugly works in the micro and the macro. Oftentimes, I think what is macro (say, in the world economy or a nation's economy or morality or society) can also be found in the micro (the household economy, the household's morality, social health, etc).

Do I think we can turn all of this around? Yes. I do. Will it happen overnight. No, unfortunately, maybe not even in our lifetimes. But, certainly, the human race cannot continue living in such vapidness. Living lives of materialism, fear and greed is, indeed, a sorry way to live, and I think it contributes much the "shadow" you speak of. Overall malaise, perhaps?

[-] 2 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

I support you. Thanks for brining progress.

i fail to see how korea or vietnam protected my safety. you don't need a semi automatic weapon for protection. a high caliber revolver or pump action shotgun are plenty of fire power.

no 30's. i fail to see how iraq or afghanistan protected me either.

[-] -2 points by Shayneh (-482) 11 years ago

Your point is very well written - The younger generation don't have a clue when it comes to "United States Loyalty". They don't understand what previous generations have done to make them safe so they could voice their opinion.

You should be thankful that you are where you are in life. 20 years from this country won't be what our forefathers fought to keep.

The younger generation are no longer "manily" and are pussy wipped by the very woman they cater to. It has been proven that the younger generations testorone level is lower for that reason.

Getting peticures, manicures, hair curles, being "metromen" really says a lot about them.

I will put any Viet Nam Vet against any of todays younger generation and the Vet will always win. Can't be denied.

I grew up during that era and can say that I never received a hand out from anyone - not like todays society.

They are too lazy - let me take that back - they don't know what it takes to succede. They have been trained that "everyone should be equal" and everyone should have the same regardless if they work or not.

They have been listening to Obama - and if they take his lead thinking that he is the best leader in the country they will not succede just as he has failed. So shall you reap what you sow - I doubt very few here here understand what that means.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Real men and women have one identity in an online forum. So shall you reap what you sow.................
