NAACP and ACLU Invite the U.N. into the 2012 Election

By Charles C. W. Cooke

October 22, 2012 1:51 P.M.

From the Hill:

United Nations-affiliated election monitors from Europe and central Asia will be at polling places around the U.S. looking for voter suppression activities by conservative groups, a concern raised by civil rights groups during a meeting this week. The intervention has drawn criticism from a prominent conservative-leaning group combating election fraud.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), a United Nations partner on democratization and human rights projects, will deploy 44 observers from its human rights office around the country on Election Day to monitor an array of activities, including potential disputes at polling places. It’s part of a broader observation mission that will send out an additional 80 to 90 members of parliament from nearly 30 countries. . . .

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the NAACP and the ACLU, among other groups, warned this month in a letter to Daan Everts, a senior official with OSCE, of “a coordinated political effort to disenfranchise millions of Americans — particularly traditionally disenfranchised groups like minorities.”

The request for foreign monitoring of election sites drew a strong rebuke from Catherine Engelbrecht, founder and president of True the Vote, a conservative-leaning group seeking to crack down on election fraud.

“These activist groups sought assistance not from American sources, but from the United Nations,” she said in a statement to The Hill. “The United Nations has no jurisdiction over American elections.”

And that is a damn shame. It really is.

[-] 1 points by WSmith (2698) from Cornelius, OR 12 years ago

This is what Cons and Voter apathy have wrought. Yet the Unicorn Chasers keep whining that Cons and Dems are both the same. Please, if we aren't going to smarten up, can we at least hold off Idiocracy for a few more decades?

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 12 years ago

Unfortunately - Idiocracy is exactly what we have been suffering through - it is the reason for the current world wide protests.

[-] 1 points by WSmith (2698) from Cornelius, OR 12 years ago

People around the world have been in a sort of sleep (shock and awe) as a NASCAR field of events have raced by post 9-11. And in mass confusion criminals get very bold. Now with the help of social media and the proliferation of communication technology, tyrannical leaders and states of tyranny are blatantly recognizable, disliked and shared. Protests ensued.

While "we have been suffering through" a Dancing With the Stars, Fox Lies, 24/7/365 RW Hate-Radio Brain-Drain ~ because a dumb, unorganized, disenfranchised people are only a crab-mentality threat to themselves ~ we still have choices available that can save us. That's why the Big$ Power Elites still blow sooo much money, time and effort to keep us from making the "correct" choice.

People, make the "correct" choice, just do what Big$ doesn't want you to do! VOTE!

Conservatives Panic Over ‘U.N.-Affiliated’ Election Monitors

[Oh, SNAP!]

By Hayes Brown on Oct 23, 2012 at 3:45 pm

Polling board members in Arlington, Virginia, demonstrate touch screen voting machines to OSCE observers in 2004

Conservative blogs and news media are all buzzing about a team of international election monitors coming to observe the presidential elections in November. The observers are arriving at the invitation of the State Department and the behest of a number of civil rights organizations, including the NAACP, ACLU, and others.

The latter groups’ call for an international team to keep an eye on the U.S. elections focuses particularly on states that have enacted strict voter I.D. laws and other curtailing of voting rights. An NAACP delegation visited the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland in September to bring attention to the issue. The NAACP’s move, and the idea of foreign presence in the U.S. to observe elections, has infuriated many on the right.

The response at the state-level is varying. Alabama Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard is, in protest of the monitors’ presence preparing legislation to have all poll watchers in Alabama hold U.S. citizenship. “It’s bad enough that Alabama remains trapped under the provisions of the Voting Rights Act,” Hubbard said “So we certainly don’t need anyone from the United Nations coming into our state and meddling in our elections, as well.”

Catherine Engelbrecht of True the Vote appeared on Fox News on Monday claiming that the monitors’ presence was actually intended to prevent and discourage U.S. voters from exercising their rights. Fox’s Megyn Kelly readily agreed, stressing the left-leaning nature of the civil rights groups, seemingly unaware of the State Department’s role in inviting the monitors. It’s worth mentioning that True the Vote, itself a Tea Party group voter suppression effort, is currently under investigation for possible criminal conspiracy. This story is sprouting legs!

Serously, isn't that enough of a reason to make sure these bastards have no seat of influence in OUR government? And then there are the other million!

You actually have to cover your eyes and ears and hold your nose to not see the glaring and dangerous differences between Cons and Dems!!

That's why the "Both-Samers" are saboteurs!

[-] 1 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Correct. And with 2 weeks to go they are gonna ratchet up their efforts.

Challenging them should be a high priority.

[-] 3 points by WSmith (2698) from Cornelius, OR 12 years ago

If they were smart, they'd shut the fuck up. But...

Like dousing a hemophiliac with itching powder!

[-] 2 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

I'm envisioning a Shatneresque character controlled by the huge alien triple head of Kochs/Rove.

I'm gonna have nightmares now.

See the Frontline doc and get new and fresh accurate images.

They actually brag about defeating pro-environment legislation!

[-] 2 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

On the Kochs or Rove? Or just rightwingers in general.? Probably seen it.

[-] 1 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Oh right. I missed it but will see it.

Thx

Spoke like another guy with no clue about why OWS got going to begin with.

Thanks for all your sabotaging and attempting to turn this into a pro establishment site, the very thing that over 50% of the people are sick of.

[-] 3 points by WSmith (2698) from Cornelius, OR 12 years ago

OK Tampon Big-Biz wannabe, GOP plant!

[-] -1 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

The debate on whether to support corporate backed politicians or make a stand against them as a sign of solidarity for all those who suffer is one that has been going on for a long time.

You WILL end up on the side of "FUck this, Im not doing this anymore" side of things eventually, because neither one of your corporate shadow parties are even willing to talk about what is needed, much less risk their lives to get it passed.

And that last statement goes for your little friend below too.

[-] 2 points by WSmith (2698) from Cornelius, OR 12 years ago

Republicon denial will put Tampon under water.

Go bother someone else, RACIST!

[-] -1 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

^melting down... hahah, you establishment Cons and Dems are all the same. Get aggressive, spew some disgusting metaphors, and then throw out some random claims....

[-] 1 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

You got nothing!

speaking of racism, did you hear about this?

I blame the Cons and Fox news.

[-] 2 points by WSmith (2698) from Cornelius, OR 12 years ago

The RepubliCon Zombies that do these things ~ however influenced ~ don't deserve freedom in this country. The 24/7/365/every city RW Hate Radio should at least be labeled and restricted like cigarettes and, wrongly, harmless porn. Hitler would be envious of Fox Lies.

[-] -2 points by marvelpym (-184) 12 years ago

holy shit. I can't believe that worked. HC, you can do the honors if you'd like.

[-] 1 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

I've heard Pres Obama talk about real change in regards to many issues I consider high priorities.

I've watched repubs water down, obstruct, & defeat those anti corp efforts.

I've experienced the neglect of the American public that is only stirring now w/ OWS recent creation.

And I have witnessed the corp entities you claim back Pres Obama squeal against the policies he pushes, and contribute their money to the repubs.

So if we grow OWS and protest/pressure for change that benefits the 99%, & replace pro corp conservatives w/ pro 99% progressives we will make progress.

Until the new system emerges. Then everything will be perfect.

[-] 0 points by LetsGetReal (1420) from Grants, NM 12 years ago

I've heard Obama talk about real change too. He can talk the talk, but he doesn't walk the walk.

[-] 0 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Sure he's walked the walk. The repubs obstruction, and the people lack of protests have made it a crawl, did you read the rest of the comment?

I'll cut n paste for you!:

[-] 2 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

OWS was started to protest financial crimes by the 1% banksters, the resulting economic inequity. OWS began a street protest movement to pressure change that benefits the 99%. Free college, debt forgiveness, tax the wealthy, prosecute fin crimes. public healthcare option, green tech.

OWS embraces all political persuasions who support the progressive solutions needed to correct these problems. Ows supports all non violent tactics including reforming within the system, as well as especially protesting outside the system to creata a new system.

We got it right!. You got it wrong. You think this is about being against one politician (Pres Obama).

It's about pushing progressive solutions.

How about the RICO law? Treason?

This used to be a joke, UN monitoring our elections, now it seems long over due.

This is what Republicons have done to this country, among the plethora of other deliberate disasters we are trying to clean up and recover from. And yet the Unicorn Chasers keep whining that Cons and Dems are both the same!! If they are successful, these days will be the lead-up to realizing true Idiocracy!

[Removed]

[-] -1 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

Inviting the UN to monitor our elections is like asking the burglar whose broke and fresh out of the joint to watch your house for you :)

I would prefer the Carter Center monitor them instead of the UN.

[-] 2 points by WSmith (2698) from Cornelius, OR 12 years ago

I just told you. Instead of using the group that likes to bomb people and manipulate elections for the west, use the independent group Carter Center.

How do you consider that whining?

If we are talking about this current system, here is a slew of solutions that would have over 50% of the public support for:

JC endorses BO for POTUS reelection.

[-] -2 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

He's a democrat, what would you expect? He's also stated this too:

"The United States is abandoning its role as the global champion of human rights.

Revelations that top officials are targeting people to be assassinated abroad, including American citizens, are only the most recent, disturbing proof of how far our nation’s violation of human rights has extended. This development began after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and has been sanctioned and escalated by bipartisan executive and legislative actions, without dissent from the general public. As a result, our country can no longer speak with moral authority on these critical issues."

[-] 3 points by WSmith (2698) from Cornelius, OR 12 years ago

It's a messy world, and no one, NO ONE knows where the reset button is!

[-] 2 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Abandoning our leadership in Human rights. Nah I think Jimmy said that about Bush II.

"The Human Rights Campaign" group endorses Pres Obama.!

Woo Whooo!

[-] -1 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

He did say it about Bush. And now he's holding Obama just as guilty. That quote was recent.

http://www.nation.com.pk/pakistan-news-newspaper-daily-english-online/letters/21-Oct-2012/us-not-above-the-law

[-] 2 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Gotta Love Jimmy. He's the best.

Glad he endorses Pres Obama. We should trust him, and the human rights campaign, Sanders, and others.

They no better than you right?

[-] 0 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

Each of us are our own person with our own orginal thoughts. Stop bowing down to people. Last I knew, they worked for us.

[-] 2 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Who's bowin down.? Not me. You use Jimmy's quote against Pres Obama, I respond with the fact that he endorsed Pres Obama.

You rail against Pres Obama with one sided campaign attacks I say there are smarter people than you who endorse Pres Obama.

Get over yourself. You attack the Pres & can't handle a challenge, so you have to personally attack me by suggesting I "bow down".

Please. LMFAO.

Stick with the substance, please.

[-] 0 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

The fact that presidents are endorsing Obama in one breathe, and then slamming him in another should be setting off alarms in your head. And not alarms about Obama, but alarms about how the entire system functions.

Im assuming you put them on a higher scale than yourself? You do, right?

Which is what you seem to think is natural. So how is that an insult?

[-] 2 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Higher scale than me? Nope. As I already said I submit that they know better than YOU!

Don't make me repeat myself again!

LOL

[-] -1 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

So who else to you place them higher than?

Perhaps all the people whom you think are "suckers" because they have to work?

[-] 2 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Flip insulted me by asking if I knew what it meant to work. He got what he deserves. He's a sucka because of his insult to me. Get it?

I suggest the opinions/endorsements of Jimmy, Sanders, the Human Rights Campaign are more intelligent and better informed than YOU!.

I might believe them to know better than others but I would have to consider that other individuals opinions, knowledge and so forth.

Don't you think that is fair.?

[-] -1 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

I dont think that someone calling someone else a sucker for havig to work is what this thing is about.

[-] 1 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Who cares what you think. You are clearly just here to attack Pres Obama. And try to push the fallacy that the parties are the same. The parties are vastly different.

You're focus on my justified ridicule of someone who suggested I don't know what it means to work hard just reflects the impotence of your arguments.

[-] 1 points by stevebol (1269) from Milwaukee, WI 12 years ago

Why not use both?

[-] 0 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

Unfortunately, most people would think the UN is a more honorable group than the Carter Center, and would probably be able to sweep a lot of stuff under the rug.

[-] 0 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

So you and the tea party true the vote, along with Fox news disagree with the UN election moniters.

Would it make you feel better if the Carter center approved of the UN effort?

[-] 0 points by Renneye (3874) 12 years ago

Hear hear!!

Carter says that Venezuela has the most above board voting practices. Mainly because, though they use voting machines...when a person casts their vote into the voting machine, the machine prints off a paper receipt as proof of who they voted for. How hard can it be for the US to put this into practice?

Though the machines are only one part of voter fraud...the implementation of machines that produce receipts would be an undeniable improvement.

[-] 0 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

Exactly. A group that is willing to report the truth on Venezuela would be a nice addition to our own voting system.
