One of the big lessons we learned during the Civil Rights movement was that registering new voters gets you some local clout. By itself helping register people might not get you everything you want, but it never hurts.
PLEASE VOLUNTEER !!
-- Love democracy.
-- Connect to community values
-- Avoid turning into a cult.
-- Be happy to serve others.
Democrats, Independent and Republicans are all served with voter registration efforts.
The King Center and Southern Christian Leadership Conference are happy to help with these efforts. We have liaison arranged to support any Occupy site that's up for cooperation.
Physical requirements are minimal. What is needed is sitting at a card table and talking to would-be voters. Registration forms are acquired online for most places. A qualified registrar can go in and get multiple forms, usually from county governments. Filled in forms need to be mailed in.
There are other resources at TKC and SCLC too. Heavy on the non-violence.
(I've also heard from some that voting doesn't matter. Imagine if civil rights people had believed that in 1954. We might still have segregated schools and buses.)
On the subjects you mention of "not get you everything you want" and "local clout" consider, if you will
--voting political campaign equivalence with beauty pageants
--PUBLIC VOTE OPTION of COMPETING VERSIONS of a Congressional BILL http://occupywallst.org/forum/public-vote-option-on-competing-democratic-vs-repu/
Volunteers are appreciated. Thank you.

Everyone should take basic exam to show they have the knowledge to vote. Exam should be basic and focus on govt structures and roles, basic understanding of economics, constitution. We do it to obtain a drivers licenses. Every five years.
