Using analysis from a former Treasury economist, the New York Times reported that Apple “paid cash taxes of $3.3 billion around the world on its reported profits of $34.2 billion last year, a tax rate of 9.8%.”

only 17 percent of American's own smart phones - but they would have you believe it's more - but judging by the sheer amount of news coverage and partnering you can tell Wall Street has got all their stock in them.

And why should Apple pay any more taxes than it is legally necessary for it to pay? Is Apple a charity?

absolutely

tax that money from them

I want social projects the people can control

Frankly it does not matter what you want or you think. Yes, you have the right to form an opinion but others do not necessarily need to agree to it, much less follow it.

Yes. These companies pay taxes by the law!

...the law they pay the politicians to write.

[-] 1 points by monetarist (40) 11 years ago

I am pretty sure Apple did not pay Nevada to write the relevant laws that exempt companies from taxes there. Besides, some of the laws this article talks about are also present in other countries in more or less similar form.

I wonder how many millions Apple spends on lobbyists to advocate for these low taxes?

We've been talking about Apple for months on the threads below and throughout many of our other discussions. And, I agree, that this new statistic about how little Apple paid in taxes is just another unbelievable example of corporate greed.

Apple is on my boycott list. Never had one, never will.

It amazes me people think Apples are essentials! Cellphones are not a need. They are a health hazard. I-pads are toys, a means to sell you silly dorky games. "Oh my God, I can't live without buttons, must have more buttons..." People need to take a good luck at what passes for living if that's living.

The Apple fetish is ridiculous. How did they get people so hooked? It's as bad as a drug. I get infuriated when my nephews come to visit and your trying to socialize, and they're sitting there texting in the middle of a conversation! It's maddening. And disrespectful.

I don't buy into Apple, I'm not a fan boy. I know some people are but I don't have money to burn so I own an apple nothing. In fact, I don't have a cell phone at all. Its just hype. Pricey crap for snotty people. Ubuntu is free if you like the mac OS. I love Ubuntu, free OS!!! Now that's cool, a whole gift economy! Linux and the copyleft is something people should really get into. Its free! I need to upgrade and dual boot. I'm using an old Wubi install right now. No its not Windows, windows comes with your computer fine, keep it, use it for games or whatever. But at least look at what people bothered make to give away! The stuff isn't half bad they even have educational stuff for kids and its all free. A store is built right in and packed with free programs. Bite me APPLE!

If a company spends billions of dollars on research and development so you can have a better computer and smart phone, they get tax breaks because there is no guarantee of success. Having these devices are essential for the way we live and give us the ability to communicate with other like we are doing right now. How much is that worth? Would you be upset if you had to pay 800.00 for a basic phone and 5000.00 for the smallest computer? I think there would be some protests with lots of shouting regarding basic rights.

I'm just saying that there are greedy bastards out there and then there are companies we need to be worth billions so we all can benefit from it. Use a scalpel and not a sword.

No one needs an iphone or an ipad. I manage to live a fulfilling life without either. If you want to over pay for a product, Apple is a safe bet. Why not take a sword to consumerism? Plant a garden, discover Ubuntu, shop at a thrift store, go to the farmers markets, by food from road side stands, cook whole foods and avoid processed junk, let your hair grow. Don't take out insane loans, don't run up a credit card bill, don't pawn your car title. Drive a used car. Just because you can afford it doesn't mean you need it. Take your savings out of the market. People can make a huge difference! Walmart hasn't a clue what it means to really live better! People who plan to social climb and get ahead based on brown-nosing, they need new cars, fancy clothes, fancy hairstyles, to buy their way into the right churches and golf clubs. The rest of us don't have to try to keep up with the Jones or put on a show. We don't have to choose to work two jobs for a car. People choose to work more and more for less money to buy things they don't really need at all. I think that's gonna change. Maybe you should adjust your portfolio just in case?
