Forum Post: ALEC's Most Wanted

Posted 11 years ago on May 6, 2013, 12:24 p.m. EST by shoozTroll (17632)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

Resembling Snyder's secret education "skunk works", ALEC, in spite of it's first amendment calls, doesn't want the first amendment to apply to them.

Money is now the more important component of freedom of speech.

http://www.prwatch.org/news/2013/05/12096/alec-assembles-most-wanted-list-and-oklahomans-say-alec-not-ok

They don't want you to know what laws to control you they are writing for their loyal (R)epelican't adherents.

To be forewarned is to be forearmed, and they hate when that happens.

But don't forget the State Policy Network (that's it's real name). That network of evil, GOP think tanks and front groups, that pave the for ALEC.

'Today most Americans live in suburbs conceived as staging areas for consumption. They move about in the enclosure of cars and shop in the anonymity of malls from which community activities are largely excluded. Politics consists mostly of negative ads shown on television screens. Then people wonder why they feel lonely and depressed, and why the sense of community has vanished.', from your link. Sigh. Yet we can still be a http://www.nationofchange.org/ working for 'The Common Wealth' too.

'“The highest interests of the community and the indispensable things of life have no exchange value and are neglected if supply and demand are allowed to dominate the field,” & “The supporters of the market economy do it the worst service by not observing its limits and conditions.”' (Wlhelm Ropke, 'Austrian Economist' & Ludwig von Mises acolyte)

I found the idea conveyed in Michael Sandel's book, "What Money Can’t Buy," really demonstrates how we have evolved from a market economy to a market society. All hail the new god of man, the invisible hand of the market. This type of thinking should really be contemplated and scrutinized.

In compliment - oppose BS carried out by the ALEC supporters ( cadre ?) :

Yesterday, I sent the alert below urging you to email your Senators to support the confirmation of Gina McCarthy as the new head of EPA.

This morning, we've learned that Senator David Vitter (R-LA) and other Senate Republicans are boycotting today's Environment and Public Works Committee vote on McCarthy's nomination, denying the committee a quorum.

This is the kind of political obstruction we've come to expect on environmental issues, and we need your help to stand up to it. Even if you've already taken action in support of McCarthy's confirmation, please help us deliver a message today urging the Senate to vote to confirm McCarthy. She is a highly qualified public servant. She deserves a clear up or down vote.

Political obstruction, is exactly what congress has been doing for at least the last 6 years.

Or at least nothing good.

[-] -2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

And IMO the obstruction in some cases could well be construed as treasonous.

[-] -2 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

It is in my book, as it's concerted and purposeful, in an astoundingly negative way.

It is obstruction, just to obstruct, and it hurts us every day.

I figure they are helping to keep this off the front pages.

I still don't agree with the neuro-linguistic implications of the first syllable of the term, but it's intent is very accurate.

BTW, The brothers Koch and their allies, have helped the World reach a milestone that ALEC legislation has made possible.

As you might suspect, it isn't a positive milestone.

It's a milestone that got zero attention in the US press.

Now this is funny ( kinda in a way ) because: ( look at this e-mail )

Break out the tin foil hats, folks.

House Speaker John Boehner and the chairman of the House Science Committee are both unsure whether the science behind climate change -- the stuff that shows pretty clearly that carbon pollution produced by humans is damaging our environment -- is real.

Instead, they're on the record saying things like this:

"The idea that carbon dioxide is a carcinogen that is harmful to our environment is almost comical. Every time we exhale, we exhale carbon dioxide. Every cow in the world, you know, when they do what they do, you've got more carbon dioxide." - John Boehner, April 2009

As long as our members of Congress continue to develop their own theories behind climate change, we will fall further and further behind in our ability to make actual progress on this issue.

Make them do better. Add your name to join OFA's team that will hold climate deniers in Congress accountable:

http://my.barackobama.com/Hold-Climate-Deniers-Accountable

We owe it to our environment and our economy to start having real talk on climate change.

Join us -- and we'll be in touch with next steps soon.

Thanks,

Messina

As Americans push their state lawmakers to increase the use of green energy sources, the oil industry is not politely stepping aside to allow a transition from dirty fossil fuels to clean energy sources.

Instead, Big Oil is trying to derail efforts in a dozen states to transition some of their energy production to green energy. The American Legal Exchange Council (ALEC), which is the premier front group representing polluters like the oil industry, is helping state lawmakers write bills that would repeal the states' previous commitment to clean energy.

Please join me in demanding that state legislators ignore Big Oil by leaving their committment to clean energy intact. Clean energy provides jobs and can help turn back global warming.

Thank you,

Drew Hudson Environmental Action

From Environment America Executive Director:

It’s a simple enough idea: Cut pollution from our cars and trucks and save thousands of lives each year. That’s what the Obama administration has proposed doing this summer, but Big Oil is of course up in arms.

For the sake of our health and environment, let’s be louder than Big Oil.

Tell the Environmental Protection Agency to cut pollution from cars and trucks.

Our cars and trucks are a lot cleaner than they used to be, but they’re still a major source of air pollution that triggers asthma attacks and even premature death. EPA’s new standards would help address this by reducing sulfur levels in gasoline and by requiring lower emissions of other pollutants from our vehicles.

But despite projections that the standards will prevent up to 2,400 premature deaths each year, Big Oil is lobbying hard against the standards. We have public health experts, environmentalists and even the automakers on our side, but not Big Oil -- and Big Oil has big sway in Washington.

That’s why this public comment period is so important. We need to show President Obama and his administration that Americans are counting on them to stand up to Big Oil by keeping these standards strong and finalizing them this year.

Let the EPA know you want strong pollution standards for cars and trucks finalized this year.

And many thanks in advance. With your help, we can cut pollution from our vehicles today, securing cleaner air for our communities today and for future generations.

Margie Alt Executive Director Environment America

So when OWS protests ALEC, or the brothers Koch, or the XL they don't meet with you approval

No, they don't. I think OWS spread it's wings much too broadly. Unfortunately, it was infiltrated by politically hungry people like yourself. OWS would have worked better if it had stayed close to its anarchist roots. Back in the early days in Zuccotti Park we really had something going. It started getting messed up and more political as more and more non anarchists joined our troops. People like you ruined OWS. It's almost a political party now. Extremely sad. Perhaps one day we can start another anarchic protest and keep it to stuff like civil disobedience, and playing outside the system.

They are also strongly pro union, yet I don't hear a single word of support about that from you.

I don't like unions because it's another way to place to power into the hands of others. I like anarcho syndycalism where all the employees control their fate.

[-] -1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Well then, it's nice for all of us to know that you don't approve of OWS.

No wonder you spend almost all your time here attacking forum users instead of discussing actual issues.

Now if only you would embrace the truth, you might still be of use..

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Shit 4 Brains Shill

[-] -2 points by LoneRanger (-307) 11 years ago

I don't believe OWS should play into politics at all. I believe in civil disobedience, and anarchy. Furthermore, I don't care for country specific legislations. OWS is an international protest, and US is not even my country. ALEC does not interest me viewed from my OWS eyes. OWS should concentrate on anarchy and global issues. This site is supposed to be the hub of Occupy, and international protest. Unfortunately, it has been taking hostage by talk of US politics which is entirely anti-OWS. Protesters (real activists) don't use this site because they know OWS is not about politics. If you went to even one OWS event you would know as well.

So when OWS protests ALEC, or the brothers Koch, or the XL they don't meet with you approval??

I'm sure they don't care about your approval, or mine, but protest these things they do.

They are also strongly pro union, yet I don't hear a single word of support about that from you.

Let alone the amount of space you take up disparaging and discouraging, people on this forum.

You should probably just go now. Your assumptions and presumptions are not useful in any way, shape or form.

Yank their power cord and they no longer have power.

"Does ALEC Really Support Freedom of Assembly? " - Its not up to them to decide that. Its up to the people to simply take it.

Have you quit buying and using Koch brother products in your house flipping "business" yet?

Do you have any plans to make a supportive on topic comment any time soon?

Oh yes, I forgot, you constantly minimize ALEC's activities.

And you don't give a fuck about what's happening in the States.

Plus you support the NRA and it's ties to ALEC's castle doctrine.

OWS?

Not so much.

http://interoccupy.net/occupythenra/

They even quote stuff from the daily Kos.

haha. Here is my post on ALEC:

http://occupywallst.org/forum/alec-board-members/

Let me know what you think.

[+] -4 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

I think you like the Koch's and ALEC too.

I think you constantly cherry pick and refuse to accept information, other than what has already been spoon fed to you.

I also think you do most your research at "conspiracy" sites like Alex Jones and Zerohedge.

On the other hand OWS, IS aware of the works of ALEC, and unlike you?

They don't care for them.

Readers want to know.

"In anticipation of protests at ALEC's recent meeting in Oklahoma City, state legislators were handed a set of talking points that read "The American Legislative Exchange Council recognizes the first amendment rights of free speech and assembly, and asks that _ do the same," apparently to prepare legislators for press questions about citizen activism. But ALEC didn't live up to those spoon-fed talking points: ALEC assembled a dossier of disfavored reporters and activists, kicked reporters out of its conference who might write unfavorable stories, and managed to boot a community forum critical of ALEC from its reserved room."

I must have stepped on a few "right" wing toes.

The ALEC lovers are apparently legion.

Here's another tweetable for you.

I wonder how many points I'll lose for posting that?

Good food for thought. Thx.

Excerpt:

Along the way, he discovered that our definition of “progress” was seriously misleading, because our statistical indices, such as the Gross Domestic Product, count almost everything business does as progress: i.e., each tree cut down is counted as a plus, while the downside of all those trees lost is not taken into consideration.

Before it's over, there's even a quote from Mises in support of the collective...................:)

"Ropke, according to the Ludwig von Mises Institute, “devoted his career to combating collectivism in economic, social and political theory.” Yet in a book he wrote called A Humane Economy, Ropke confessed that his beloved market was not to be entirely trusted. “The highest interests of the community and the indispensable things of life have no exchange value and are neglected if supply and demand are allowed to dominate the field,” he wrote. “The supporters of the market economy do it the worst service by not observing its limits and conditions.”

I like it.

"In what might be the biggest anti-ALEC rally yet, the ALEC legislators and lobbyists arriving at the Renaissance Hotel on May 2 were greeted by a wave of protesters that outnumbered the conference attendees."

Pretty cool, but it got "right" around zero national press.

They "pre"-covered their tracks too.

no point in letting the "little" citizens know what they are up to, after all they only write legislation to aid the BIG citizens.

Fighting ALEC has been on the OWS agenda, almost since day one.

There's a bit too much Alec Baldwin here for my taste, but the rest of the photos are telling.

Don't forget ALEC's close ties to the Koch's.
