The Senate is poised to vote on a bill that would end the internet as we know it.

If it passes, the "Protect IP Act" would give corporate copyright holders the authority to demand that the government shut down any website without a court order. All they would need is to allege that the website contains copyrighted material.

This bill has been rushed through Congress because big corporate interests like Comcast, Pfizer, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have spent millions of dollars lobbying for this censoring legislation.1

This bill is an outright attack on our free internet. If it passes, the government could shut down a website like YouTube if a member does something like post a video of themselves singing a copyrighted song.

This gives corporations and the government the ability to determine what information you can consume on the internet -- a dangerous practice which, when committed by the Chinese and Iranian governments, is denounced by the American people and almost all of our elected representatives.

Internet companies including Google, Mozilla, Facebook, and Twitter, say that "the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action, and technology mandates that would require monitoring of web sites."2

Right now, only a small number of Democratic senators are standing up to corporate interests and voicing opposition to the bill. And the only way we can stop this outright attack on the free internet is to have more senators commit to vote against the legislation. No matter whether your senators are Republicans or Democrats, it is important that you urge them to take a stand for internet freedom.

We solved that problem years ago- when our data was removed- we just started mirroring the data- it takes 10 minutes to create 10 mirrors- most of them outside of the us. like on this site http://tinyurl.com/6lkzgbk

The biggest supporters of SOPA & Protect ID are ofcourse Hollywood, The Music Industry, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In addition to this list of companies that support these bills. Please see these links, ignore the title of the first one. http://theoriesofconspiracy.com/2011/11/list-of-major-companies-supporting-sopa.htm Also, check out these tech companies that are for SOPA. http://www.sfexaminer.com/politics/congress/2011/12/house-bill-ends-public-financing-elections?page=0%2C0%2C0%2C1 Even NBC supports SOPA and demands their that their partners support it as well.http://www.webpronews.com/nbc-wants-partners-to-support-sopa-or-else-2011-11 We need to keep with the petitions/campaigns, meltdown the Congress phone lines, and engage in mass protesting in front of Congress and in other strategic places. I also think there should be mass boycotts of Hollywood, the Music Industry, and NBC. Hit them where it hurts. We have power--don't forget it. The American people need to fight this or else goodbye freedom!

Wow, Thanks for the info.

Yes, this goes passed copyright infringement and is really a censorship law. If SOPA passes then we will have something similar to China's great internet firewall. Pinch me, am I still living in America???

Not trying to get off the subject, but check this short commentary on how the Government is taking our freedoms away daily. We are now living in an Orwellian Society. http://www.wpix.com/videogallery/66806863/News/IT’S-ALL-ABOUT-CONTROL#pl-62886862

What is wrong with protecting copyrights? If a website is doing something illegal, like disseminating copyrighted material, it should probably be shut down, no?

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

Hold the website responsible, or the poster to the website - don't shut the whole thing down. That's the point.

What if the person hosting the website is in Uganda or something? How can you really hold them responsible for anything?

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

we got bin laden didn't we?

[-] 1 points by Mooks (1985) 12 years ago

True, but I don't know if it is worth sending in the Navy SEALS to take out someone streaming a movie from Uganda. Maybe add some wording to the legislation that makes it pertain only to websites where the US cannot go after the person through the current legal system.

I agree that websites should not get shutdown without a court order but our Copyright holders need to be protected. Creativity drives progress. For the move streamers in Uganda or wherever else this may be the only way.
