OWS has entered american consciousness. The '99%-1%' idea is part of our language now and this in just over a year. Great start OWS! Thank you for this very interesting article.

[-] 5 points by beautifulworld (23824) 12 years ago

They were in there faster than the Red Cross.

[-] 4 points by Ache4Change (3340) 12 years ago

The Red Cross do good work worldwide but the better question might be, where was our government? OccupySandy and OWS can show how we the 99% can and must seek to organise ourselves and we are making a good start.

[-] 0 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 12 years ago

More like bounced off America's unconsciousness. 98.5% of the 99% voted for the duopoly. Nothing has changed.

[-] 4 points by Ache4Change (3340) 12 years ago

I see that your glass is 98.5% empty, so if you'll allow, let me top you up there and please read this - http://occupywallst.org/forum/i-do-not-believe-you-can-build-a-movement-on-a-lie/#comment-874847 & happy holiday. OWS IS making a difference - you're here after all! The 99% need you, so Go Occupy!

[-] 1 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 12 years ago

No, I see reality clearly, not through a rose colored glass. In 2008, 1.5% voted for third party and independent candidates. In 2012 the same. Looking at the numbers it's clear that Americans are nothing more than sheep, carefully herded into two pens by party propaganda. They have completely disregarded OWS's message. Nothing has entered their consciousness. If you can't see that, I would have to assume that you are safely at rest in one of those pens.

[-] 2 points by NVPHIL (664) 12 years ago

I agree with you but this post is about occupy sandy. If we can work it right this action can help build the ground swell that is needed to make any changes in govt. Reading the nytimes article and following the occupy relief efforts has made me so proud of occupy I have to tell everyone I know about it.

[-] 1 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 12 years ago

Admirable work by these people.

[-] 1 points by NVPHIL (664) 12 years ago

It is. I'm amazed by how much they have accomplished already.

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 12 years ago

Oh darn.

People just wont vote for Ron Paul.

There is a very good reason for that you know.

[-] 0 points by Ache4Change (3340) 12 years ago

That is quite an insulting and negative comment really isn't it? Perhaps you feel superior to us sheep so :-p right ba-ba-back at you! The rest of us will keep concentrating on your 1.5% - the 37% who did NOT vote for POTUS, the 99% as well as the many millions who'd actually want justice and change along the lines that Buttercup implies! 'Reality' clear or otherwise, is subjective & why is it that you are here gain?

[-] 2 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 12 years ago

Most Americans find it insulting to be told their government is not democratic but a corrupt plutocracy. Or that there young men sent to far off lands have shed their blood for a lie.

The statements are not meant to insult or be negative, just to show reality. When people prefer to believe a lie, the truth is always negative and insulting.

Occupy has been calling the sheep to leave their pens, but most haven't left. The numbers prove it.

[-] 1 points by Ache4Change (3340) 12 years ago

Most Americans don't realise that 'their government' is a 'corrupt plutocracy' or that we are an Empire! Education is The Key and there are ways and means of doing that. I liked Buttercup's m.o. but 'truth' is lie in these Orwellian Times! Good name for a radical paper or web-site, I think, lol.

[-] 2 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 12 years ago

Yes, education is the key weapon in our fight for real democracy and a fair economy. To realize that they need to stand as human beings on two legs without the support of the two party legs.

Orwellian Times. Great name for a paper!

[-] 1 points by Ache4Change (3340) 12 years ago

Two Parties - BAD! Four (or more) Parties - GOOD! Only Together can we achieve our goals. Hope you could relate to Buttercup's fantastic comment. Solidarity!

[-] 1 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 12 years ago

How can we achieve our goals together if we further divide ourselves into parties? Democracy doesn't require more parties to be successful. It needs well informed people who are able to make common sense decisions without belonging to any party and being told how to vote.

[-] 1 points by Ache4Change (3340) 12 years ago

Duopoly is making a mockery of our democracy, so when you say that - 'Democracy doesn't require more parties to be successful', I disagree. Get the corporations and their money out of our democracy and watch democracy and politics thrive in this country because yes - 'common sense decisions' do not need any party affiliation but they DO need an informed electorate. It is not so much a question of 'being told how to vote', it is much more a point of being presented with real facts and not just b.s. propaganda!

[-] 1 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 12 years ago

When I said "Democracy doesn't require more parties to be successful", I meant that Democracy doesn't need parties period.

Explain why you think parties are necessary at all?

[-] 1 points by Ache4Change (3340) 12 years ago

Democracy doesn't need parties and I agree with that but that is how we seem to organise our political systems and affiliations. I went of what you said not what you now say you meant and do you know of any country where they have 'pure democracy' and no political parties?

[-] 2 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 12 years ago

Nebraska is the only state in the union to have a non partisan legislature.

Today I heard someone call our form of government "Participatory Fascism".

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

This altruistic urge was initially unmet by larger, more established charity groups, which seemed slow to deliver aid and turned away potential volunteers in droves during the early days of the disaster.

That right there is beautiful and damning all in one sentence. Hell, yeah!

[-] 7 points by beautifulworld (23824) 12 years ago

Thanks, GF. I'm a little emotional about this because I was in the area the very next day as a close family member lost everything and I went to help salvage the little that we could. So.......yeah. Go Occupy!

[-] -3 points by Nowsmichigan (-310) 12 years ago

Chris Matthews should have gone down there also to apologize to the victims for what the dirtbag said last week on his show

[-] 5 points by beautifulworld (23824) 12 years ago

He apologized quite profusely himself. I saw it. Forgiveness goes a long way, Nowsmichigan.

[-] 2 points by NVPHIL (664) 12 years ago

I believe this act will do more show what occupy is made of then anything else it accomplished. I find it awesome that the last I checked occupy did more to help then the red cross.

[-] 4 points by beautifulworld (23824) 12 years ago

Go Occupy Sandy!

[-] -3 points by Nowsmichigan (-310) 12 years ago

He still is a dirtbag

[-] 3 points by beautifulworld (23824) 12 years ago

Okay. LOL.

[-] 1 points by brightonsage (4494) 12 years ago

If I were Romney I would spend the next three months working to clean up and restore NY & NJ and then I would join Clinton's Foundation or Bill Gate's and never vote again. But that's just me.

[-] 3 points by TrevorMnemonic (5827) 12 years ago

A las barricadas http://youtu.be/InIlOPC87VM

Black are the storm clouds that shatter the heavens.. Loud is the thunder and cold the pouring rain.. Though death and pain await us in the hour of our darkness.. Duty calls us onward, for we have a world to gain.. Nothing is so precious as liberty - in danger - It must now be defended with our courage and our strength.. Raise the red and black flag of the workers revolution.. which will carry us to freedom over every enemy..

This is an example of what we can do. For 50 years the people in power have created structures to inhibit and suppress these abilities in order to create dependence. The election has not and will not change this fact. The only change we will see is when the 1% are completely defunded. Yes, I am anti-wealth and not afraid to say it.

[-] 1 points by ridamen (1) 12 years ago

please include supplies/food for pets...they are starving, too. thank you for all the good work...we did our own helping, too, served hot food to Far Rockaway residents...they need lots of help also....(1) (1) FEMA and (1) RED CROSS truck just stationed in one place...never moved around where they are needed most...people are sending their messages to everyone....they need more help.

[-] 1 points by RemyC (1) 12 years ago

It's nice to see OWS and the Guardian Angels work together, considering GA founder Curtis Sliwa is such a right wing lunatic.

Meanwhile QE3 is trickling it's way up the chain to keep the CEOs of major banks collecting pay checks!!!

Words can't express how incredibly proud of the human race you all make me. When you can't count on the very government that the people created all we have left is each other. Thank you for all you are doing and helping to restore my faith in humanity!

[-] 0 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

Time and time again, when the shit hits the fan its the people that make it happen. You can create all the bullshit government programs you want, it comes down to the people. Are they willing to get busy? Clearly they are.

Incredible job to anyone who is actively helping in this. Its a good reminder that when it comes down to it, the human ability to create and achieve is incredible.

[-] 4 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Thank you. We're doing what we can. We can't deliver temp homes & generators like Fema, or Light a fire under Coned like Cuomo. Noe give out free gas like the Feds. But we are filling an inmportant need, and people appreciate it.

So thanks for for giving us some props.

[-] -3 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

You are on here too much to be doing anything, get lost.

[-] 1 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

LMFAO. You are wrong as always!

Conservative policies are at the root of all our problems!

[-] 6 points by JohnWa (513) 12 years ago

The root of our problem is far greater than conservative minds alone.

http://www.alternet.org/world/no-conspiracy-theory-small-group-companies-have-enormous-power-over-world?paging=off

The parasytic super rich psychopaths are gathering ever more hoping to insulate themselves from the crash of our human world which is the inevitable end product of over population and over exploitation of natural resources - the feeding gound of the organized oligarchy who rule out Governments as well as keep the public compliant with lies and propaganda.

Wealth continues to migrate to the hands of a shrinking group who don't give a stuff about the rest and regard us as vermin. The vermin that created their accumulated wealth can do something about it when they clear their heads of the rubbish they are fed and organise.

[-] 0 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Colorful writing. But you didn't show it is NOT conservative policies at the root of ALL our problems.

In fact your description of the super rich caring only for themselves lends itself clearly to the conservative "you're on your own" mentality.

If you know of a liberal/progressive policy that is at the root of one or our problems I'd like to hear it.

[-] 2 points by JohnWa (513) 12 years ago

Colorful perhaps depending on your viewpoint. Psychopaths indeed but not alone as sociopathic disregard for others also features in the destruction of hope for large sections of communities as wealth is syphoned off to the top of the almost feudalistic money power structure.

The conservative mind is more inclined to accept the “authority” of the power structure and defend it.

There are also many liberal minds who are prepared to work within a rotting system but have little progress in changing it. Their efforts end up supporting business as usual.

Where do we go from here.

Added to the mix of growing inequity, marginalization of democratic processes, removal of peoples' rights, capture of the media by the power brokers; there is a greater consequence spoken little of during the election debacle. A permanent state of internal war has been declared on any challenge to the system as well as the wars waged globally bases on justification of greed with a plethora of constructions fed to the tax payer.

We cannot carry on as we have done exploiting the planet's non renewable resources. Population cannot continue to expand. A crisis on many fronts lies ahead.

Business and politicians do not operate effectively with a long term view or plan for societal good nor the future of the planet's biosphere we all depend on.

[-] 1 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Eloquent. But not clear on your proposal.

Are you offering a path forward?

What are you suggesting.?

[-] 2 points by ExNube (4) 12 years ago

Greed is the root of the problems and BOTH liberals and conservatives are infected with the disease... Some just hide it better...

[-] 1 points by VQkag2 (16478) 12 years ago

Greed? Yes! I agree that is at the root.

"You're on your own" mentality =conservative!

"we're in this together" principle= liberal progressive.

If you know of a liberal/progressive policy that is at the root of one or our problems I'd like to hear it.

Fault Lines follows key Occupy organisers through the winter as they continue to build a movement even after violent evictions across the country.
