Fracking for oil and gas poses a direct and immediate threat to our drinking water, our health and our communities. But the oil and gas industry is ramping up its PR machine to try and convince the public and decision makers that fracking is safe. It’s time to fight back in our communities with a Global Frackdown!
There is a tremendous amount of organizing going on across the world to protect our water and our communities from fracking.
Together as a movement, in the past year we have:
- Passed over 200 local measures across the United States to ban fracking (including state-level legislation in Vermont);
- Stopped fracking in Bulgaria and France;
- Pushed for moratoriums in multiple regions in Europe;
- Obtained a moratorium on fracking in South Africa;
- Defeated state legislation that would have expanded fracking;
- Prevented plans to open the Delaware River Basin to fracking;
- Worked to stop pipelines and facilities to export fracked gas from coast to coast.
The Global Frackdown will unite concerned citizens everywhere for a day of action on September 22, 2012 to send a message to elected officials in our communities and across the globe that we want a future fueled by clean, renewable energy, not dirty, polluting fossil fuels.
This Fall as the United States debates its energy future and the oil and gas industry escalates its public relations offensive, it’s critical that our elected officials – some of whom are running scared – hear the truth in a powerful way from their constituents. It’s time to expose the oil and gas industry’s propaganda for what it is. It’s time to hold our elected officials accountable. It’s time for a Global Frackdown!
Participants in the Global Frackdown will be organizing events in their communities to challenge decision makers to oppose fracking, united around a common mission statement calling for a ban on fracking and investment in a clean energy future.

About Fracking
Fracking, technically known as hydraulic fracturing, is a highly water-intensive and relatively new process that injects millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and chemicals thousands of feet beneath the ground to obtain previously hard-to-reach oil and gas deposits. This polluting process is:
- Endangering our drinking water supplies
- Polluting our air
- Releasing dangerous levels of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that can migrate into nearby wells, causing home explosions
- Negatively impacting agricultural communities
- Perpetuating our addiction to fossil fuels

As someone who has spent decades working in the water utility industry, I can tell you that aquifers are more valuable than gold. Aquifers proved better water storage than surface storage reservoirs. But once an aquifer collapses or becomes contaminated, it reduces water storage.
This is a catastrophe in the making.
Moreover, we do not even know what kinds of chemicals are being injected into the ground because they are "trade secrets."
I can also say that even if FRACKING companies tell you that they are not injecting in the area of an aquifer, there is migration. You can find that those chemicals will plume, seep and migrate way beyond the oil and gas fields they are after.
Our health and safety and long term survival are at stake.

Yes - it is one abuser feeding another abuser - this culture of no responsibility no accountability - which says the bigger you are the more you can get away with is a systemic illness - that we the people need to address - by taking back our government and pushing for laws already on the books to be enforced as well as making systemic changes like the implementation of green power fuel industry infrastructure technology.
The danger in that, to me, is that too many proprietary technologies will hold back overall innovation roll outs.
Somehow standards will have to be made and acted on.
After Fukushima, it should be obvious, and that was just an issue with 2 incompatible power grids.
There are industry standards. New equipment added to the power grid would have to meet existing standards.
Take a look at the proprietary issues Tesla itself is creating with their own cars.
Such a charging station needs to accessible and effective with all such cars to be successful.
They are setting themselves up in the position of leasing access to designs to other manufacturers as well as setting up their parts suppliers for growth. They are positioning them self to be the industry standard.
We'll see how it goes.
Others will be attempting their own "standards", and this is a lot more important than Beta vs VHS.

Yep - there are some epic battles upcoming. Tesla is going for a market advantage by starting out with free recharging. The cable industry got a boost in a similar way by starting out with no commercials. Once a market has been captured changes will no doubt be introduced.

GR8 it is wonderful to see these new reports show up and get posted. Anyone who supports a healthy Environment/World - would support fracking protests - and replacement of fossil fuel with new clean power and fuel technology.
Surprising to me, is that instead of throwing the protesters in jail. The RCMP actually helped them out.
Could we get a little of that down here in the US?
Maybe the RCMP could reach out to the Police of the USA in solidarity to sanity.

When we launched the Global Frackdown with some of our partners, two of our primary goals were to help cut through the propaganda put out by the oil and gas industry, and to build a broad-based call for a ban on fracking. I think it was a huge success, and I'm absolutely inspired by the actions that happened on five continents last Saturday. But, I also know our work is far from over.
We don't think any fracking should happen, but what makes this whole proposition even worse is that oil and gas corporations want to frack our land and water here in the U.S. to export cheap natural gas overseas for a huge profit. Join me in telling our members of Congress that we don't want to sacrifice our good health and clean water for the gains of the fracking industry.
There are two bills in Congress right now that could help stop the export of gas produced by fracking. If we limit fracking companies from selling gas overseas, we'll help take away the market for fracking, while also protecting our health and our water from this hazardous process. Tell your representative to co-sponsor these bills and help fight fracking today.
We know that injecting millions of gallons of water, sand and deadly chemicals into the ground to extract natural gas through fracking is not how we're going to move toward a clean energy future.

We should not be exporting LNG - Hell we should not be allowing fracking PERIOD! We have absolutely no need to destroy our environment/air/land/water to extract fossil fuel. Not for use here in the USA and not for use elsewhere in the world. Stop the killing of the world for profits.
We have the technology available right now today to end the strife abuse pollution death. The technology to save our world from death by pollution.
Consider - what if instead of throwing billions of dollars away continuously sending money to governments in need of help for their people ( monetary aid that somehow never helps the people ) - what if we were to instead buy products from American Businesses - large and small businesses at market prices not at profiteering prices. These products made here in America domestically could be sent to meet the needs of the afflicted/needy. Food clothing medicine but also and more importantly in many ways - green power/fuel technology that they could be taught to run and maintain - green tech that would be sustainable by these under developed countries. Power to light homes, power to pump water, power to use for transportation - real support for a societies infrastructure and all non polluting.
Poverty/scarcity of resources causes all kinds of societal/world ILLs. We can clearly see the ILLs effects on society of a failing economy right here in the USA and we are a modern and developed country.
We can change all of that - here at home and to the rest of the world. We need not be on a path of perpetual armed conflict.
We have the technology - we have the capability we certainly have the need.
It is all here and ready to use - and this is just what I have stumbled across.

The "Global Frackdown" map doesn't show ANY fracking in Canada, but there is significant "fracktivity" [HA! my word] in Northeastern British Columbia ["B.C."] and in the Sacred Headwaters [Stikine Valley] area also.

Besides the threat to underground aquifers, fracking uses a LOT of water in the operations.
Fracking in an energy-intensive operation too - they use huge pumps powered by electricity, sometimes with their own diesel generators.
The EQUATION: "what do we get out of it - lost water reserves + costs of all kinds" When it comes out negative, as has been the case so far, it is an example of "privatise the profits, socialise the risks" [as with nuclear power, etc etc]

YES - MSM is very good at propaganda/brain-washing. Insidious to put such filth into entertainment. And better then 90% of the population may not even notice.
Wow -- in less than 24 hours, over 22,000 Sierra Club supporters have demanded that TransCanada stop intimidating peaceful Keystone XL protesters. But this is not the only new front against Big Oil this week -- we also need to oppose the expansion of Shell's Jackpine tar sands mine.
According to Chief Allan Adam of Canada's Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, "Our lands and way of life are supposed to be protected by... the Canadian Constitution... It's time [for] both government and industry to ensure our rights are protected."1 Yet bile duct cancer rates in Fort Chipewyan, which sits near massive tar sands mines, are much higher than average.
The Canadian government needs to stop tar sands mining, not rubberstamp plans from Shell to dramatically expand it. And yet the government is poised to approve Shell's request to increase production at the Jackpine Mine by 50% -- a devastating blow to indigenous communities, wildlife, the Boreal Forest, and our shared climate.
The deadline to submit your comment is Monday, October 1. If enough of us tell the Canadian government that Shell's tar sands mine is harming the world, we can make this an international issue -- submit your comment today!
Chief Adam and the ACFN tribe filed a lawsuit against Shell last year -- but they can't beat Big Oil or the Jackpine Mine alone. This is a global issue that threatens us all.
Tar sands oil is one of the dirtiest fossil fuels on earth. Expanding the Jackpine Mine means an additional 1.18 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions poured into our climate, as well as the creation of a new pit lake that, once full, will contain 128 billion gallons of toxic tailing pollution. Furthermore, Shell's own reports admit some species will lose over 50% of their habitat, a catastrophe for caribou, songbirds, owls, lynx, and martens.
Some officials even believe the mine expansion could break the law -- regulatory documents suggest it could blow past the legal sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide limits.2
By opposing the expansion of Shell's Jackpine Mine, you will be helping to increase international pressure on Canada to shut down tar sands mining. Submit your comment to the Canadian government by Monday's deadline!
