Just weeks after the massive demonstration of the #WalmartStrikers Black Friday day of action, Walmart CEO Mike Duke is visiting NYC on Tuesday, Dec. 11 to give a speech for the Council on Foreign Relations entitled "The Responsibility to Lead" - talking about women's economic empowerment, food security & the global middle class.
That's ironic, since Walmart represents the epitome of corporate greed: from use of sweatshop labor, to the poverty wages it pays associates, to discrimination, to illegal retaliation against workers who organize. Mike Duke has no right to speak about the "global middle class", and IT'S TIME WE TAUGHT HIM THE MEANING OF RESPONSIBILITY.
Join ALIGN, 99 Pickets, Walmart Free NYC, Occupy Bergen County, Retail Action Project, MoneyOut/VotersIn, and allies for an afternoon of action -- picket lines, street theater, and more.
Text "@pickets" to 23559 for day-of text message alerts.
We will publicly hold Mike Duke accountable for:
- The deaths of 120 workers from a fire at Bangladeshi sweatshop producing clothing for Walmart in incredibly unsafe conditions.
- Paying Walmart workers poverty wages, forcing many to file for public assistance, and for retaliating against workers when they began to organize and speak out about working conditions.
- Mistreatment of workers across Walmart's supply chain, especially warehouse workers and immigrant workers at Walmart suppliers
Good work OccupyWallSt.
This is excellent.
TWEETED - CorpoRATions need to be held accountable for their actions.
This is awesome!
Hold the whole family accountable, but this is a real start!!!
Cant stand the company, but only one family member is a chairholder. They are a great family and that company was built by a great man. The people you want to blame live in my city and they come from all over the world to work at that hole. If any place in the world needs to be occupied it is here...where the wal mart home office is BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS
WallyWorld has a pretty long and varied history of malfeasance.
I agree, a good place for actions against that malfeasance.
You have shared very good information about speech. Corporations need to be held accountable for their actions. We would like to get message alerts about women's economic empowerment, food security & the global middle class. There is also another way to get alerts for this important through messages on hold.
Ultimately, Walmart does exactly what it is supposed to do
Ultimately, Walmart does exactly what it is legally mandated to do .
MAXIMIZE PROFITS FOR THE OWNERS
we passed the 13th 14th 15th amendments to stop the profit from certain activities
we need another amendment to sever the link between capitalism & democracy
Hope this goes well today.
Corporations need to be held accountable for their business practices. These practices of outsourcing and exploiting workers under poor and deadly working conditions need to end.
A simple fine is not enough.
Great post OWS
