March Guidelines

Posted 12 years ago on Sept. 25, 2011, 12:23 p.m. EST by OccupyWallSt

  1. Stay together and KEEP MOVING!
  2. Don't instigate cops or pedestrians with physical violence.
  3. Use basic hand signals.
  4. Empowered pace keeps at the front, back and middle of every march. These folks are empowered to make directional decisions and guide the march.
  5. We respect diversity of tactics, but consider how our actions may affect the entire group.

I have to say that this post sounds a little defensive. The cops tried to provoke the marchers into rioting by spraying young women in the face with mace and by making violent arrests but what they had hoped would occur did not happen. The headlines in the corporate media did not get to say that 'The Occupy Wall St. Protests Turned Violent Yesterday' . As Chris Hedges stated in his interview with you, civil disobedience and disruption of the machine is what they are really afraid of. These kind of actions must continue but not just on the weekend but during the business hours of the week days.

They are desperate to have you look like violent radicals instead of normal folks with all the same economic frailties as everyone else simply fighting for economic justice.

Your chests should be swelled up with pride and your voices should be full of demanding language.

You need to state publicly that the cops tried to provoke the protest into violence because it is true. But that the marchers passed the test of not being provoked by the police and conducted themselves with pride and dignity.

Call a press a conference and accuse the police of attempting to provoke violence in what was a peaceful march. Put the police on the defensive. Put the oligarchs on the defensive. Use the video evidence collected yesterday against them.

Remember Dr King in the 60s follow his lead, the manner in which he demanded peaceful protests from the multitudes. Remember also, those black people back then had unsurmountable unspeakable odds to work with given the police tactics. Stay strong, stay peaceful and stay courageous. This IS your country.

Create signs that let the police, fire fighters, public workers know we are on their side!!!! Demand High wages for police officers! demand higher wages for the working class! Carry a sign and demand high wages for police officers and see how many we can get on our side!!!

[-] 3 points by johnbrown1936 (3) 12 years ago

If we oppose those of the ruling class, then we oppose their footsoldiers the police as well. The police as an entity only exist to serve and protect the rich and propertied classes. This isn't some debate about whether cops are good or bad... but this is about what social role they play within a capitalist society.

Whether they as individuals are personally our enemies does not matter. The institution of policing is the protector of our class enemies.

[-] 5 points by erikzb (5) 12 years ago

Have a little imagination. Think what could happen if the police broke rank en masse at a grassroots level. Would you spurn their support? I hope not.

[-] 1 points by scipio (9) 12 years ago

great retort. This movement doesn't want to be seen as anti cop, to the American public.

[-] 5 points by tdsisti (80) from Austin, TX 12 years ago

This is not what police HAVE to be and I don't think this is what the majority of them want to be. Make signs that cite the average salary of an NYPD officer as compared with the salaries of the bank executives. Maybe then they'll start wondering WHY they are being combative with the demonstrators. Let the elitists (thought they are surely not elite) do their own dirty work. According to nyc.gov the starting salary of an officer is $34970.00 including holiday pay...no bonuses for cops... http://money.cnn.com/news/specials/storysupplement/ceopay/ Check out this sight and see the salaries and compensation of bank executives who received money from TARP.
When politicians claim that it was paid back, do not believe this nonsense. HOW the money that is "paid back" matters more than their gerrymandering of the figures. If they are only lending money to other banks it fails to help those who lent it too them, the American tax payer. This is a debt not owed by the average person.
Lloyd Blankfein's salary and total compensation in 2007= $600,000 Oh, but he was not born rich and Wall Street makes people rich is the defense used by pundits...it makes SOME people rich. In 2010, Blankfein's salary increased by 3.6 million. This is obviously not simply about money, but about how the money is made. Blankfein is not the only person making hefty profits in lean times, but so long as banks and corporations and our government are in the business of taking from everyone and giving back to themselves, we must protest.

Some Guidelines For Non-violent Civil Disobedient Traffic Blocking.

Never plan where and at what time you will do an action. Create groups of ten to twenty or more activists and have each group elect a coordinator who will pick a time and location for an action and only announce the action moments before it occurs. While waiting for the coordinator to declare an action the group can choose a flash mob approach and receive a text of the time and location allowing the group to disperse locally before the action or the group can just picket on the side walk with the coordinator before the action is called. This approach prevents undercover police from knowing exactly where and when the action will take place. Once the action begins it will also take time for the police to arrive and get organized for the arrests allowing for the greatest impact on the traffic. The more time your are sitting on the pavement the more the traffic will be snarled.

Do not lock arms or go limp when the police begin the arrests. When police reach down to make the physical arrest give them your arms and let them help you up and walk with them to the paddy wagon. This approach allows less injuries to occur to the activists and the police. It is also important that the coordinator does not participate in the action so that he or she can let the police commander on the scene of the action know how the activists are physically prepared to be arrested. This will put the police at ease knowing they will not have risk injury in the arrests.

When doing an action do not step out into speeding traffic. Wait for a lull in the flow of traffic in the street and then walkout remaining in a standing position until the most immediate cars are halted by your action. Once the traffic has clearly stopped because of your blockage then and only then will the coordinator give the ok to sit down. Safety is of the utmost importance in all these type of actions.

Only activists that know and understand that they may be brought up on actual charges and may have to spend some time in jail should take part in these actions. Always give your name to the police so the legal team that will represent you can find you in the system after the arrest

When doing these actions always keep a smile on your face and good cheer in your heart so the police can see your not angry at them. Your traffic blocking is the general symbol of our collective anger but that does not have to translate to anger between you and the police.

As Michael Moore stated on Olberman last night a cop on wall st. told Michael that "These guys (Pointing at the exchange.) destroyed the police pension funds'. letting Michael complete his film shoot on wall st.

As soon as I can find some cash I will come down there and be with you folks.

Mr Hart, a voice of wisdom given these times. Heed his words. I venture to say he's an elder and experienced in these matters. A peaceful demeanor is paramount if we want to make change happen. History has proven that. Again I harken back to Dr King and the Civil Rights Movement. Learn from those who have gone before us.

[-] 1 points by NonNarrowMindedProtester (1) 12 years ago

Soooooooo...if you are going to block traffic, what becomes of people who have to get to work? What happens to the school buses going to and from the schools? What about the ambulance tied up in traffic because of this kind of protest? Ya know....your "right" to protest is now violating my "right" to get to work, or the doctor or to school... So are your rights more important than mine are?

FOCUS...FOCUS....FOCUS People!

You can't March on Wall Street and talk about 10-15 "demands." No more than 3 very laser-like issues. For example:

  1. Prosecute and bring to justice the big banks like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, and Bank of America. Prosecute people like Angelo Mozilo, Joe Cassano, Win Neuger, and John Mack for their roles in the sub-prime mortgage scandal.

  2. Repeal Gramm-Leach-Bliley which made sub-prime mortgage scandal possible.

  3. Raise the tax on the people getting wealthy in the stock market. No more paying 15% on capital gains. Raise this to 35%.

[-] 1 points by Javier (283) from Villa Maipú, Buenos Aires 12 years ago

ONE issue

Right on. Folks, you want to be heard and change minds. In order to be heard, people have to want to listen. Please present yourselves in such a way as to be taken seriously and people will listen.

I'm proud of you guys. I'm hearing your call for liberty and equality, unfortunately, I can't be there with you, since I live in Iran, but my heart is in the streets with you. I don't think I've any practical suggestion for you, as you may know we face a really different brutal kind of police forces, but I can say under any circumstances be calm and use your silence as your weapon. Never let your smiles fade, for liberty and equality

[-] 2 points by valfulford (2) 12 years ago

Bravo young protesters! You are making a difference even if the main stream media doesn't give you credit. I am sure the British Press was less than enthused by the protests conducted by our hero Gandhi and look what got accomplished when the non-violent non-cooperation movement took hold.

[-] 2 points by lonelyDonut (2) 12 years ago

Don't wear hippy-looking clothing! Don't wear very bright unnatural colors! Wear normal clothing so people could relate to you!

Otherwise, you discredit the whole thing. Please.

[-] 2 points by SupportFromFL (3) 12 years ago

Exactly. This is about being heard and taken seriously. Maybe appearance shouldn't matter, but it does. This is about Wall Street. If you want to be take seriously on Wall Street, dress Wall Street. Don't let your pride keep you from being effective in this protest.

[-] 1 points by agent139 (13) 12 years ago

Yeah. Unnatural colors might really freak people out.

Also don't make quick movements. And it would help things if you're not black.

Seriously though, it would probably be most effective if everyone was wearing a $3000 suit just for the sake of irony, but that seems unrealistic. And if we can't hear one another and take each other seriously on account of being human beings, then the whole thing is just pissing into the wind anyway. Be yourself.

[-] 2 points by Peacefulprotests (2) 12 years ago

'They want us to get violent. Then they know how to handle us.' -John Lennon. Please keep this peaceful. The whole world is watching. Anarchists who resort to throwing bricks are giving the media more fuel for the conservative fire. 'Look how dangerous these protestors are! The police are correct to tackle and mace them!' We don't want that.

Note to you: In Egypt, some protesters fought off Police to give others space to peacefully demonstrate. My Proof: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/01/29/18670645.php

[-] 2 points by rescat (2) 12 years ago

Keep in mind all the police aren't a problem. Most are just there to keep traffic from being blocked. The more I study the videos, I see there's a difference between those just keeping the peace and the few thugs that are being brutal. Think of them as individuals. Just like any other group of people they've individuals. Also bear in mind people don't become police officers because they want to harass demonstrators.

I think it's very important that you don't let this become a conflict between you and the police force. There's no need to provoke them. The thugs among them will show themselves.

On the video where the women got pepper sprayed, I watched over and over because I saw a comment somewhere saying the women faked it. But the officer who did it was very quick. I doubt some of the other officers even saw him do it. It happened in the space of 2 seconds and then the spray was out of sight again. Why did he think he had to be so quick? Because he was probably doing something they would disapprove of as well. So be nice to NYPD (without pestering them), AND watch out for the thugs among them. Be safe. No one out here wants you to get injured, or even arrested. We'd rather see you there peacefully showing the rest of the world what you stand for.

Ghandi, MLK, Thoreau, these are the people in history that the world looks up to for their peaceful revolutions, values, and methods. Not the thugs.

"Be the change you want to see in the world." -- Ghandi

Banks use NYPD deposits to speculate on commodities. If they win, they keep it, if they lose, the NYPD pays.

USE IT!

Good job, protesters. Remain peaceful and focussed and your cause will grow. There are a lot in solidarity with you because this is affecting the vast majority of us! Nonviolent resistance is your most powerful weapon. Train your protestors in nonviolent strategies and, most importantly, get organized. You have the numbers, now you need to organize them. Look at successful past movements. The sit-ins of the 1960s, Freedom Riders (these guys were beaten relentlessly yet they remained nonviolent), the Berkeley Free Speech Movement, etc. With peace and persistencee, your message will be heard.

ORGANIZE & FOCUS YOUR MESSAGE. THE MOVEMENT WILL GROW.

I want to say something: we don't live in democracies. We live in oligarchies. Voting one per 4 years don't give the power to the people. So we have to show that we are not in democracies. After this, in creating real democraty and in delegitimizing governements, we'll be able to choose directly what we want, capitalism or not. But first, it's about creating democracy!

All talk about national debt, deficit reduction, tax reform, and our repeated financial crises for that matter misses the mark unless it addresses this shameful fact:

Billionaire Warren Buffett paid 11% "total taxes" (federal, state, local, indirect taxes - including corporate taxes) on $8 billion annual investment gains while a single minimum wage worker pays 37% "total taxes" from her $14,500 annual salary. See http://fairsharetaxes.org for details.

[-] 1 points by AbraxasCcs (3) from Caracas, Dto. Capital 12 years ago

Violence must not to be an option. If someone wants to react with violence he/she must be considered as an infiltrated.

[-] 1 points by GandhiKingMindset (124) 12 years ago

Many have said these things but let me try to collect them here in one spot. We are gaining momentum and the world is waking up to this incredible protest. We have remained non-violent. Many in America are sympathetic and are grateful that we are taking a stand. But occupying the park and marching by themselves are not enough. The world and our supporters will get energized if we get tactical and take action: FIRST - The videos of police using brutal physical force and pepper spray against peaceful protestors do an incredible job displaying the brutality of the power structure. King, Gandhi, Abbey Hoffman and countless others who are / were professionals at non-violent action and peaceful provocation would absolutely be calling a press conference denouncing these actions and showing these videos at the press conference. This puts the police on the defensive. SECOND - King and Gandhi were successful in part because they were experts at tactical non-violence. We can follow in their footsteps by blocking the entrances to Wall St. offices this week. As we know, police have set up what amounts to a Green Zone around Wall St. But the suits have to enter somewhere. They have to leave the public street and enter that Green Zone somewhere. That point where public meets private should be the very center of our focus for non-violent resistance and occupation. Even as the location of that intersection shifts, we can always identify it. By definition there must always be an entrance and that entrance should be our focus. THIRD - OUR ONE DEMAND - We should make one single demand: "Shut Down Wall St." Why are we shutting down Wall St.? "Because Wall St. is hurting Americans, hurting citizens of the world and ruining our environment." When they fail to shut down Wall St., we do it for them in a non-violent way using peaceful non-violent resistance. And when the press asks, why.... We answer "We shut down Wall St. for a day so America and the world could breathe for a day, be free of the plutocracy for a day, be free of the exploitation for a day, be free of the greed for a day. Many will ask "What good is a day?" and we'll answer: "You call it a day. We call it a pretty good start. If someone has their foot on your neck for years and years and you non-violently force that foot to be removed for a day, that allows you breathing room for all sorts of options. FOURTH - HOW - To shut it down, we need human chains of 30, 50, 90, 150, 300 people linked together (think zip ties) blocking the various entrances. The police will find it almost impossible to deal with these human blockades. This will create the largest pedestrian traffic jam New York has ever seen and the people who have been trading on the world's misery for so long simply won't be able to get in to do it that day. It will help if we don't go in as a march but instead go dark as regular old NYC pedestrians from all directions and then show up there at the same time. I am aware that now protestors have found access to a large cache of civilian clothes that will allow many of the new people arriving to blend in (suits, ties, the works). This new donation will make it much easier to blend in up until the point of protest. And it will also gum up the works even more, making it easier to shut down Wall St. because now the police can't tell who's who and they need to stop EVERYONE, even the suits. Their Green Zone will then break down. FIFTH - THE RESULT - The result of this direct non-violent action, this just protest, is that the front page of newspapers around the world will show images peaceful American youth shutting down the financial district that has wrought so much destruction around the world for so long. They'll be inspired by the ingenuity, the success and the courage and the movement will grow EXPONENTIALLY. Gandhi and King have given us the playbook. It's peaceful non-resistance. And it works. We have the stage but that's not enough. It's time for direct action. It's time for civil disobedience to bring the truth into the light. They are not equipped to deal with it. They don't know what to do with non-violence because all the cameras are rolling and whatever they do makes them look bad. We will confound them if we take direct action. The spirit of Abbey Hoffman, Martin L King and Gandhi is with us. It's time to use their playbook. It's time for ACTION!!! Civil disobedience. Our disobedience will be consistently blocking the entrances to Wall Street’s offices. They will find us coming together to block these entrances wherever they move them. Because there is always an intersection where public meets private. No matter where they move it, we’ll be there. We will be there.

Sounds like something right off the cuff of a Wall Street lifer. Occupy Wall Street is for the people is it not, that would include fire fighters and police even people that work on wall street. Sides? Jobs with a respectful wage for one and all who want to work. The police and the firefighters as directed by their superiors are doing their jobs. The people that proved themselves unworthy of the uniform they wear that were wielding power and hate with handcuffs, mace spray, batons and unwarranted force are clearly in need of some serious help. They obviously need to go back to the academy for some basic training and anger management. It comes down to irreverence towards life itself on the part of those in the position to make a difference for thousands but instead choose only to do so for themselves and or a select few from their inner circles. The American dreamscape has reached the point of horrific nightmare and epic financial disaster. The people of this country need to be shaken from their sleep! Occupy Wall Street could be the arm that reaches the release valve without waking the sleeping giant that guards the machine. Rage and anger are not bad emotions or motivators but they should not excel beyond righteousness or to the point of violence. With you in heart, spirit, mind and prayer.. Love and heart to all of you! God bless.

It's not just the folks in the US who have lost or are losing their homes and jobs, but hundreds of millions around the world..

Why do so many people here like Gandhi so much? I mean, India isn't directly ruled by England anymore, but the "Democratic" government of India is still enslaved to the interests of Western companies. He didn't exactly change much, IMO.

Create a sign to remind police they were once young idealists too, surely they can understand why you are marching.
Best of luck.

I think the protesters should carry the flag to show we want our country back and take the symbol away from the tea party. They don't own the flag we all do....

IF YOU WANT CHANGE: Threaten to TAX stocks, bonds, derivatives, etc. like the proposed EU's transaction tax, an overwhelmingly popular proposal in Europe. It will scare and DEFINITELY get the attention of Wall St. A tiny, fraction of one % tax on Wall St. would wipe out the US debt.

[-] 1 points by woland55555 (2) 12 years ago

Guys, "wall street" long time ago moved to Madison and Park, Rye NY, and Westchester NY, and Greenwich ct. That's where you start. Not on wall st. Be ware of your leaders.

[-] 1 points by woland55555 (2) 12 years ago

its funny, I was just reading this article:http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/20/nyregion/a-glimpse-at-bloombergs-lavish-tastes-at-home.html?_r=3&hp

and I see that 80 people got arrested, just popped out. You shoul've organized one from uptown as well. But that one would've turned into a war zone in a matter of hours.

The most effective thing possible? A general strike. Why is this not being discussed with any sincerity?

[-] 3 points by rickied (31) from Worcester, MA 12 years ago

Because no one has any fucking clue what this thing even is anymore. You can't strike if your list of demands is longer than your grocery list. You'll never go back to work again.

[-] 1 points by TheVolunteerWino (112) 12 years ago

equality, the ability of any working family to purchase a home for themselves without predators circling around. . . I know its a long list, . .but its been soooo long since we have been getting ripped off and since our rights have been removed, . . .yes the list has gotten quite long, . ... . How about the demand that they all step down from power now, .. all of em

Our purpose is for peace and equality, to live in a world where the benefits of human ingenuity and creativity can be felt by all people. Our world is becoming smaller with the rapid growth of the human population. Resources face depletion and contamination due to the extreme oppressive greed of the few. The answer is not a violent wave of the masses, but a unified and peaceful enlightenment of humanity that will bring a new age of ideas through tolerance and diversity.

"Any fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction." Albert Einstein

Your site would look better if you changed the word "instigate" in the 2nd guideline to something like "provoke" or "irritate".

[-] 1 points by TruckerTom (11) 12 years ago

The word is starting to get out. Urge people all across the country to contact their local ABC News affiliate station to ask for coverage. This shouldn't be hard now that local channel 7 in New York is covering the March on Wallstreet. Most importantly... if and when you get in front of a TV camera, make sure your message is clear and concise. Tell America your story! Why are you there? Don't speak in broad sweeping generalizations like "we're here to end corporate greed" or "we want to end poverty." Just one or two points! Get everyone on the same page. The rest of America will back you!

[-] 1 points by kaylababe (14) 12 years ago

Use the UK riot tactics. Small flash mobs that can work as skirmishers for the larger group. Never allow the group to stop moving!!! That is key. The flash mobs can be utilized as scouts and to hamper the police ability to quickly deploy and trap the resisters in their march.

1 PEACE 2 Stay together and KEEP MOVING! 3 Don't instigate cops or pedestrians with physical violence. 4 Use basic hand signals. 5 Empowered pace keeps at the front, back and middle of every march. 6 These folks are empowered to make directional decisions and guide the march. 7 We respect diversity of tactics, but consider how our actions may affect the entire group.

I was reiterating, . . . please, . .REMEMBER PEACE!

And if you like her plan, please consider supporting the 8th USA Parliament, because we have joined her campaign too, and I am running for US Vice President myself to help bring our teams together.

She nominated more than 50 names to the Cabinet: http://usparliament.org/cab-1.php

She is with the Green Tea Party, and I am with the Free Parliamentary Party.

Amazing revamp of the site...much kudos! There are movements on Facebook and YouTube as well to occupy those place so please spread the word. Focus on occupying Wall Street-so if you can get there, do. If you can't, there are other venues in the works to show solidarity and occupation. Knowledge is real power so become contagious!

Create signs that let the police, fire fighters, public workers know we are on their side!!!! Demand High wages for police officers! demand higher wages for the working class! Carry a sign and demand high wages for police officers and see how many we can get on our side!!!

[-] 0 points by kennethl (0) 12 years ago

You can't "instigate" people except through conception. Like, dirty. Just sayin.

[-] 0 points by SupportFromFL (3) 12 years ago

It's important to be TAKEN SERIOUSLY by the police, news media and government officials. Wear a suit. Cut your hair. Speak very specifically about the aspect of this that you're passionate about. Imagine if thousands of professionals were protesting. Imagine if thousands of "them" were protesting! That would really turn heads and get attention.

As soon as you say "facist", people outside your group stop listening. Maybe that upsets you, but it's true.

If you don't appear to be taking yourself seriously, they won't take you seriously. This is about getting attention and, most importantly, getting more people to join you. Appeal to everyone in your image and your words will more likely be heard.

[-] 0 points by exampler (10) 12 years ago

I have an "outlow" protest suggestion. Maybe you can use a martyr protest to attract attention: there is one thing they will be scared of. Martyring the most important thing they have in their life: money. Hold one dollar in your hand and a lighter in the other, then burn it, holding it in your hand till the end. It will mean: money has a vaule till the moment I give it a value. "Don't warry, it is not money we want back from you, simply our life. And when they realize that power to control people needs and values will no more be in their hands, maybe the will start talking and discuss before people all over the world will start burning their bank notes... I know you say...." but I need that dollar!"... At first I would say "No changing can be painless at all" or..."well, first time use self print copy, it is a symbol." . But than I will tell you " if you need that dollar, you as the white collars that "need" one million dollars. More, I don't know how you guys organize protests, but what you are doing is something never happened before and you need to create an international net, as newspapers an TV are not giving reports about it. You need start moving people to all the business center of their own city.

[-] 0 points by rescat (2) 12 years ago

Keep your focus on what you went there for in the first place. Police intervention is to be expected. You are very brave to be there, doing what you're doing. I do feel that you represent me and wish that I could do more. I'm trying to spread the word, because the news media isn't.

Don't blame the police, they're following orders. You may not like their methods, but I think it's pretty much the norm, what they're doing so far.

The focus is Wall Street, to get your message across as peacefully as possible. Do your best not to block traffic, but to be a presence that can't be ignored. I know there's a fine line there, but if you are not the instigators of trouble, if you leave that to only be the police or others, not you, then you should be able to continue indefinitely and get more attention on your message rather than your methods. Peace and love to all of you. The world IS watching.

Thank you for your PEACE !!!

I praise such courage. I need such courage because in this cause I, too, am prepared to die. But, my friend, there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill. Whatever they do to us, we will attack no one, kill no one, but we will not [comply] -- not one of us.

They will imprison us, and they will fine us. They will seize our possessions, but they cannot take away our self-respect if we do not give it to them.

I am asking you to fight! To fight against their anger, not to provoke it. We will not strike a blow, but we will receive them. And through our pain we will make them see their injustice, and it will hurt -- as all fighting hurts. But we cannot lose. We cannot. They may torture my body, break my bones, even kill me. Then, they will have my dead body -- not my obedience.

-Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
