South Minneapolis Grandmother Wins Loan Modification

After a public pressure campaign through the Eviction Free Zone of Occupy Homes MN, Gayle Lindsey, a nursing assistant and grandmother in South Minneapolis, who was facing imminent eviction, has won a modification of her mortgage from M&T Bank. Her victory marks the seventh for Occupy Homes MN and the first in the Eviction Free Zone, a project that brings neighbors in the Central,_Minneapolis) and Powderhorn neighborhoods together to refuse to leave their homes without a fair negotiation.

Lindsey, whose renegotiation came a month after her redemption period ended, is the first victory in “the Zone.” With the help of Occupy Homes MN, she organized a series of actions, community potlucks, and press appearances. Lindsey received a call, while sitting at her kitchen table, from an executive at M&T Bank. The bank offered to write her a new and affordable mortgage.

“It shows that Occupy Homes MN works,” she says. “I want to move on to more victories for the community.”

Broadly, it is time to embrace what has been set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The right to housing is the right to an adequate standard of living.

Stand up, occupy, and find a local group with which to organize through the Occupy Directory.

MayDay is coming. Are you ready?

Occupy Homes Minnesota is another great affinity group to go along with Strike Debt, and Occupy Sandy

Gathering community support and then taking their recalcitrant stance against the corrupt status quo is what Occupy is all about

And forcing these banks to renegotiate the sub-prime loans into long term fixed rate loans is the very least that should be acceptable

Wow. Nice to see a small victory in a sea of foreclosure.

Solidarity with Occupy MN, Showing us all how to take direct action without using the corrupt political system or being discouraged by the critics.

While affintiy groups like OHM, Strike Debt and Occupy Sandy may only be having "small victories"

Like you implied though, these affinity groups are showing the rest of us what can be done when good people look beyond the corrupt system for remedying their neighbor's plight

They deserve our praise and support

Agreed. This is the most valuable activities we can perform. Small (ut growing) actions by people, for people. & of people.

Politicians should see and be ashamed of their failure, & their submission to monied interests (banksters in this case)

And people should see these efforts and conclude that pols are corrupt if they do not support these people centric actions.

Shaming our politicians for their failings in proritizing their special monied interests over ours is a nice by-product in helping our fellow man/woman

"The people united can never be defeated." Yes, I have been in more than one protest where that chant was used

Chants are good.

Here's something not necessarily an Occupy effort but certainly occupy supportable.

From many people one goal.

That's a great initiative the Lynn City Council put into effect in bringing homeowners together with lenders in trying to renegotiate unaffordable, I would guess sub-rime mortgages mostly

And there is little doubt in my mind that it was inspired by Occupy Homes who have reclacitrantly brought this to the fore-front of the public's conscience

What has been done by direct actions has awoken people in the belief that we do not have to adapt to a screwed-up system that prioritizes profits over people

There will be many victories like this, as well as defeats, on our journey to the sea change we so desparately need. But for that systemic change it will require Occupy staying outside the putrid political system

Exactly, I agree. Occupy may not be directly involved with Lynn City, but the occupy actions/efforts have made everyone think & act.

We will take credit for this as well. LOL

Agreed, anything good we will take credit for ;-)

And in reality, concerning intiatives like this, it is not a reach, as for far too long we have wrongly thought that we have to adapt rather than RESIST

We've been adapting long enough!!! Time for THEM to adapt.

Not adapting, but RESISTING is one of the main tenets of Occupy
