CHARAS served the low-income, activist, and artist communities of lower east side for over 20 years, providing artist's space, performance and gallery space, after school programs, workshops, English classes and meeting space for countless neighborhood organizations. In 1999, despite a community use restriction & widespread opposition, the building that housed CHARAS was auctioned off to private developer Gregg Singer, who immediately moved to evict them. After a hard fought battle, CHARAS was evicted on December 27, 2001. The building, still zoned for community use, has sat vacant and derelict ever since. This Sunday, it's time CHARAS gets their community center back! Event Page

CHARAS/El Bohio Cultural and Community Center was founded in 1965 by Latino youth leaders of notorious New York City gangs who resolved to organize to improve the Lower East Side. CHARAS was born from the awareness of the need for change, namely by addressing the broader issues impacting the community such as racism, police brutality, the lack of economic resources, services, quality education and housing.

Please join us to mark the Ten Year Anniversary of the Eviction of Charas Community Center with music, food, friends and a community speak out! Dance, speak out, and help us to create a community center in the street. One day the developer's blue wall will come down, and that community center will be back inside where it belongs. With a General Assembly and performances by Great Small Works, Hungry March Band, Rev. Billy & the Church of Stop Stopping, the Peoples Mic and kid friendly activities including face painting, dance, and art making! Its a Potluck! Bring a dish to share!

CHARAS/ El Bohio Holiday Party and Community Potluck! Sunday, December 18 12pm - Rally at Tompkins Square Park 12:30pm - Process to CHARAS 605 East 9th Street (bet. aves. B & C)

I thought that OWS was about the disparity of wealth, Money out of politics get crooked politicians out of office, etc etc. Things that will help America first , Then work on the smaller local problems , All you seem to be doing is taking on the local problems in NYC. I hope you use the well educated people in the movement to work the problems of America first not much time left before the election.

OWS makes mistakes. Humans are running it, ya know.

But fact is, there's a criminal element in the 1% that has brought enormous damage on this country. The total to these smash-and-grabs runs to $7.3-trillion for 2003-2011 between mortgage crimes and pension/investment frauds. The biggest organized crime operation of all time.

(The whole country books at $55-trillion.)

Our kids miss a bath here and there. Sure thing, kiddo. The protesters are following Dr. King's nonviolence, but otherwise it's Feral City if you must believe it.

They of the criminal 1% are thieves.

Way back I had a letter published in The Village Voice on behalf of the People, the community and this school.....http://www.villagevoice.com/2006-06-20/news/letters/ Now http://youtu.be/Z49Zi8TCZbo I stood in front of 60 Wall Street and screamed my guts out...I alerted the NYPD before hand I would be there for 5 minutes and leave...it was about Deutsche Bank’s role in financing Auschwitz and the mass murder of Jews along with others and what set this off was trying to meet with Occupy Wall Street Healthcare at 60 Wall Street Sunday...and I was harassed by DB’s private Nazi army -- I refer to Amanda the People’s Burden City Planning demanding 60 Wall St. open’s it toilets back up -- so Nazi of them... It is really frightening that DB has hired their own private military dressed in black with no identification what so ever. John Penley tells us in this YouTube http://youtu.be/kK5odi345tc how DB’s private security said I f///ed your Mother and you are sh/t to OWS housing guy. This insane abusive foul mouth also told me he isn’t a civil servant so he doesn’t have to tell me his name and who employes him. He repeated that a lot before telling me I would have to leave a public space.

Don't believe right-off that the foul-mouth thug is a DB contract hire.

You are seeing on-somebody's-payroll rightie thugs showing up at protests and Occupy meetings all over. One blockbuster example was Patrick Howley and Mike Stack inciting a riot at D.C.'s Air & Space Museum on October 8th. They started with a diversion, including pushing a guard, then Howley ran around the metal detectors into the exhibit area. The whole Museum had to be shut down, plus a crowd of mostly-elderly-Quakers getting pepper sprayed.

Getting shadowed by thugs ??? Don't be surprised.

Think of these guys as modern Sturmabteilung, the SA. The Brown Shirts. So far thankfully we don't have 3,000,000 of them running around.

Take pictures. Get good documentation for dates and times. (Don't act so (*&^%%^& helpless. The law is on your side here.) Then when they show as agent provocateurs "provos" at protests and try to incite more riots, the criminal complaints can include conspiracy. Ruin their whole afternoons.

Keep occupying. The building should be used by the community as it once was. Clearly the "owner" is simply speculating and doing nothing of any social value with the building.

How's this for a letter to DB ???

DB administers a privately owned "public space" at 60 Wall Street.

The anti-crime protests called Occupy Wall Street have been trying to use this area for meetings. New regulations have announced DB's nonsupport - such as lowering the lighting level and locking sanitary facilities.

More critically, black uniformed thugs have started showing up in this space challenging the Occupy volunteers. They claim to be contract employees of DB. there is no reason to believe that claim. They resemble the early Sturm Abteilung apart from wearing black instead of brown.

Occupy's anti-crime focus relates to the astonishing $7.3-trillion of mortgage scams and investment/pension frauds perpetrated 2003-2011. History's single largest smash-and-grab. These kids' futures have been damaged so that a very few could steal.

Occupy follows this:

Pledge For Nonviolence

  1. As you prepare for Occupy Wall Street, please open yourself to life, love and the blessings of faith, hope, and charity.
  2. Refrain from violence of fist, tongue and heart.
  3. Walk and talk in the manner of love; for truth and love are the core of life, neither ambition nor the temptations of control.
  4. Sacrifice personal wishes that all might be free.
  5. Observe with friends, with false friends and with your foes the ordinary rules of courtesy.
  6. Perform regular service for others and the world.
  7. Pray or simply ask within to be moved so that all men and women might be free.
  8. Remember that nonviolence seeks Justice and Reconciliation – not victory.
  9. Strive to be in good spirits and in good health. We are the 99% and we must go in peace.

Perhaps you could follow Voltaire.

These kids support your civilization.

Thank you.

Sufficiently polite ?
