Retractions

Posted 13 years ago on Sept. 22, 2011, 1:45 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt

Original reports from the Tuesday, September 20th arrests had a false report of protester's tooth being knocked out. The report of the critical condition of another protester with a gash in his leg was also exaggerated in a moment of panic as the police report indicated he was bleeding from the leg. OccupyWallSt.org is strongly committed to providing the most accurate and up-to-date information; please accept our apologies for these inaccuracies.

Exactly, talk about sensationalism. Your first media venue is this blog and you're already exaggerating things

There are other news reports I would like rectified.

1) In this report: http://occupywallst.org/article/whom-do-you-serve/ You write the following:

"Such incidents are unfortunately common. Brutal repression has long been a daily reality for people of color, trans and queer people, criminalized drug users, sex workers, and other marginalized communities. But now that the 99% and the Occupy movement are standing up for social and economic justice, we all are subject to those same violent tactics of repression. How can the police protect and serve the public, when they repeatedly assault the public in the interest of the 1%? What exactly are the police defending -- our right to free speech and peaceful assembly, or broken financial and government institutions?"

This gives the impression that the police at Occupy are targeting minorities, but I haven't seen this to be the case. In a report of Occupy, you shouldn't bring up what police did in past protests. If you do, then it means you are open to the idea that the police or other news agencies can compare the Occupy protesters with any other protesters throughout history. Would it make sense if in an article about Occupy protesters the author would comment on how the protesters in Israel and Palestine are using violence to achieve their means?

2) I don't think it's fair to compare the Occupy police with the Egyptian military. You should write an article on the differences. Egypt and American have different socio/political realities and should not be compared. This confuses matters and only serves to demonize the Occupy police by associating it with the actions of the Egyptian military.

Thanks. (and no more Tiananmen Tanks please!)

Definitely saw a protester with a bleeding leg. Don't know anything about a tooth.
