You are correct. They don't know who they are fighting. They are pawns in a vicious game of chess being played by horrific and immoral groups.
They aren't meant to fight people like you and I, because the people pulling their strings know they can't win that way. They are meant to be the tinder and the spark that ignites the fire that will consume them first, so that their shadow puppeteers can step in when the smoke clears and take over what is left.
Evil is too stupid to realize it always loses in the end. And too stubborn to stop trying anyway.
