Forum Post: Worry Wart

Is anyone concerned that this could start a riot? If the assembly is not respected by the police and people get worked up, it just worries me. I am concerned that people looking for trouble could turn it into trouble. The ability to form a mob can happen so quickly. It just seems like more structure needs to be in place. Forgive me if I am behind on conversations I have just been told about this and am reading as fast as possible.

I think the internal self-policing is a good idea. If you will protest our internal police I will in turn protest your protest.

But will you keep your protest non-violent? If so fine I can respect your counter anti-protest position.

I think it is ironic we will have an internal police for our group. If that happens I will protest the internal self-police force.

I absolutely agree with the person above (or below?) me. If those among us who understand the negative implications of allowing any violent action to be tied to our group do our part to stop anyone from doing so, we will be that much stronger and more efficient in effectively purveying our message[s]. In this way we will also demonstrate the superfluity of police forces, as well as bolster our reputability and sincerity. Certainly I understand the mindset of potential looters and those who merely wish to destroy commercial/government property, but we must each do our best to tell those who are willing to listen why their desire for violent action is outweighed by the purpose of the occupation itself. And that's the best we can do. -Calum

One only needs to look at the WTO situation in Seattle to see that regardless of the desire to remain non-violent there will inevitably be looters, rioters, and others who believe that violence is a means to achieve an end. The best advice I have is to have some people who are willing to "self-police" the group. People who are willing to step in and stop people who are breaking windows or looting. The more willing the group itself is to confront violence the less likely it will be that the police will be required to step in.
