Forum Post: Why didn't the Occupiers protest outside George Soros' NYC home?

Soros is a Billionare (definitely one of the 1%)

He was a Wall Street big wig who was convicted of insider trading who was never even punished with financial penalties or jail time, and is now heavily involved in US politics

That seems like the picture perfect target for the Occupy Wall Street crowd to highlight how the "corrupt 1%" do what they want and get away with it

So why did you guys give him a pass???

I can't help but think it's because he's on the left. All of the millionaire homes visited were conspicuously on the right.

Until people realize that all of the people on every part of the political spectrum have to be considered as part of this movement, it will either fail or only serve to put in place something that is just as bad (or worse) than what currently exists.

Apparently Soros is in sympathy with the Wall Street protesters and supports them. He is well known for his philanthropy in supporting liberal causes. “Actually I can understand their sentiment, frankly,” he told reporters while announcing a large donation to the United Nations. “I can sympathize with their grievances.” http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/politics/9269-big-soros-money-linked-to-occupy-wall-street Do you think they should protest Warren Buffett as well?

In case you didn't know, "The New American" is the John Birch Society's news publication. They've called almost every president since Eisenhower a secret communist and are best known for handing pamphlets on how water flouridation is used for mind control.

soros made his money breaking the bank of england and bringing poverty to millions. dont kid yourself

I think Soros earned it more than many of the others because he was convicted of cheating to get to where he is, and his cheating occurred specifically on wall street and he was in no way punished

It isn't as though he was remorseful about having done it, he just appealed the decision recently trying to get it overturned on "human rights" grounds

Charity or not, that doesn't sit well with me from a justice stand point

Buffet is super rich yes, but he hasn't done anything criminal to my knowedge

He's just as bad as all the rest of them. But he's not the problem, just a symptom.

[-] 1 points by Maxwellian (9) 12 years ago

I guess I don't see your differentiation

If an old school inside trader who has moved on to influencing government with his money isn't part of the problem, then who or what exactly is?

[-] 1 points by Maxwellian (9) 12 years ago

I actually want to know

I'm on the west coast so going down there and asking, or trying to get my own crowd to go isn't an option

It isn't like I can fly out there

I'm not trolling, I'm not completely sold on the movement's genuine-ness (I think it is being hijacked by the establishment parties) and this detail is one of the things that makes me think that

If you're worried that OWS is a Democratic front, and you're a west-coaster, find some west-coast libs with nine-figure net worths, and get some people at the LA or SF events to go protest them. There's no excuse not to participate, and I agree -- billionaires that aren't actively fighting corruption are part of the problem, Soros included. That said, nobody is too rich to be redeemed; if they're willing to offer support without insisting on being the bosses, then they, like anyone else, are welcome to join.

[-] 1 points by Maxwellian (9) 12 years ago

With that rationale, the right public speech from enough of the 1% shuts down the entire movement

We all know the rich, and the politically connected, have no problem giving speeches or publishing comments that are beneficial to them and their money, or get protesters to leave them alone

[-] 1 points by ribis (240) 12 years ago

If you actually care (and aren't just a troll looking to spread FUD), go to an Assembly and get some people to march over there. Unless he actually comes out in favor of OWS (and throws some effort into backing without co-opting), he's part of the problem, too.

Maybe the same reasons they don't protest Warren Buffett or Bill Gates?? There's a rather large portion of the mega-rich that advocate the same causes as the protesters.

Or maybe Glenn Beck's right?? Maybe there's a socialist conspiracy between all the jews that Glenn Beck slandered on his show??

Or maybe they just sympathize for Holocaust survivors that, for some reason, are targeted the rest of their lives by conservative bloggers that only advocate free markets when it benefits Republicans??

Or maybe it's because he lives all the way up around Golden's Bridge??

Maybe you should just stop being a whiny pussy and go protest him yourself if it bothers you so much??

As one of the most hated people by the rabid right wing, I have to assume he's upsetting their right wing corporatist agenda and they will do anything they can to discredit him, including installing shills on blogs.

[-] 1 points by Maxwellian (9) 12 years ago

Of course

write me off as some "paid shill" rather than answer me

I guess that is easier

[-] 1 points by tritone (36) 12 years ago

I answered above. If you're legit, I apologize. Read the article I referenced and it should tell you clearly why, in spite of his corporate past, he is a friend of the left.

I mean come on

-Big rich wall street guy -Broke the law to get even more rich -Never punished for it -Now using all that big money to influence US politics and ultimately our government -Lives in NYC

What am I missing? Why didn't he get a front door treatment that others got?

[-] 2 points by Frankie (733) 12 years ago

Screws with currencies causing harm to many of the 99%, buys up farm land in Africa to control commodity food supplies...

He must be stuck in a short dollar/long Euro trade since lately he's been just about on his knees begging the EC to get their act together and form some kind of centralized union to save it.

Why people think that he's on anybody's side other than for his own profiteering is beyond me.

[-] 1 points by TLydon007 (1278) 12 years ago

Nobody is stopping you from protesting him. The rest of us would like to distance ourselves from wild anti-semitic conspiracy theories.

Besides, even if all those conspiracy theories were right, we would support him for secretly (but not really secret because he reveals his tax deductions) channeling money to obscure charities in a diabolical plan that somehow would lead to the protests.
