Forum Post: Who remembers the usenet before dot com took over?

I happened to have been online in1994, then got sent an email from a list which corrupted the EPROM on the seagate hard drive I ran, which accessed that part of the drive which handled the IO from the modem port on my Mac.

At the time I was also on the usenet communicating with English writing people all over the world. Learning how people live and meet their needs where they are, and using some of that to improve the way we meet needs here.

It was a year before I replaced that HD, when I returned, the usenet was gone. The place I had visited after getting online through the usenet was dot com. In 1995 dot com was all there was.

It was creepy. I saw BIG money making "cool" imagery with a sort of closed circle group of followers who were always more or less on the same subject/page. It has gotten nothing but worse.

Who remembers the "Global Village"? Such was the term gore used to sell it to congress for DARPA to develop. From that came the usenet.

What of there was another project which used dot com very much against human interest?

In any case, I need the usenet back. It was hosted on university servers which observed free speech law.

Global village forgotten. Gone, free speech on the Internet.

It also appears people here do not know what free speech is for.

There is a saying about "not knowing what you had until its gone"; we it doesn't apply to Americams. They still don't know what they lost.

Eh? Usenet still exists. Occupy had a group not too long ago. It has since folded. You can still use telnet, gopher, etc... Nothing forces you to use the browser to reach a .com. Open up your terminal.

Here's a list to get your started:

Congress sold us a global village then turned it into a strip mall. I could have done what you suggest then. i didn't because I need to go where the people are and a special trick to get there means lot of people in the village get left out.
