Well, chumpsky is still regarded as a friend of the Palestinians in the West, which goes to show, I guess, how nearly friendless they are here. I don't know how Palestinians regard him now with the BDS slanders he has thrown around, but I'd suspect many will still tread softly regarding him, as they may look at him as all they have in these parts of the world.

This attitude, I'm afraid, is indicative of a deeply ingrained cultural problem we face. Those who have a little bit hating those who have nothing, and for what? How is this not the ultimate example of class warfare? Why shouldn't we complain about abuse of power, at least in that case we can't say the powerful have unequal bargaining power, but why would the middle class disparage and marginalize the most venerable in our society, people who are already disenfranchised. This is a striking example of lack of empathy, and yet it is a popular sentiment. How did we arrive in this ugly place? If someone really thinks that this is the way to inspire the poor to strive for a better life, I would suggest before trying to counsel anyone on anything, you do some serious introspection, and evaluate yourself. Take this as friendly advice put as kindly as I can possibly put it.
I can only speak from my personal experience. I've been to several different occupations and while I would hardly characterize myself as a full time occupier I have spent several nights over night at different occupations both before and after evictions and while I have seen very strong disagreements at occupations, I've never seen the kind of personal insulting at a physical occupation as goes on at this forum. At no actual occupation, for example, have I ever seen anyone call aother occupier or visitor an idiot.
I've never had any man talk to my face like I've read many of the dregs here freely keyboard to strangers.
I don't expect it to start happening anytime soon either.
THis is a gathering place, a "home" of OWS. You have decided to come in here and shit on the rug. And you wonder why people respond to you with hostility?
Why don't YOU try to do that in person, to people's faces? How far do you think YOU'LL get? GO to a GA and find out how your behavior is responded to.

Or that your bile won't be condemned in the strongest possible terms? That your obscene selfishness won't be met with obscene language?

Perhaps, but that's no reason to act that way in kind. After all it only encourages that sort of dreadful behavior.
I can promise you if any of these people felt compelled to speak how they do to me or mine, at my house or in public, they'd be put on notice one time only.
After that, things would become much more assertive and prejudicial.
At the encampments most people who are full time occupiers think of the encampment as their home and they are very protective of it. I've still never seen the kind of insults at an encampment either from occupiers or from opponents of the movement as I've seen here on this forum and whenever any argument begins to escalate in that direction people typically intervene to de-escalate it.
Exactly and I can promise you that the most flagrant and bold keyboard commandos here would be the most demure and fearful cads cowering in dark corners, especially after they got their butts kicked for a few city blocks if they truly thought such behavior would fly in a grown up world.
People don't "cower" at encampments, not even from the cops. In fact the very concept would be alien to them, which is exactly my point. Even when you are not using four letter anglo saxon words, your position seems couched in a kind of hostility and defensiveness which is not only absent at encampments, but alien to them.

That's the nature of electronic communication, it's not as personal. Sometimes comments sound worse than intended, but other times, people will tend to speak more harshly, simply because it's easier to call someone a douche bag (or whatever) on the internet (versus face to face).
I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but it intuitively feels like a negative. Nevertheless, nature didn't select for the ability to engage in civil discourse over an electronic medium, so in a sense, humans are still acclimating to this technology.
That said, I personally try to exercise as much civility as possible. In my experience (at least in most cases) we get back what we give. If we don't allow ourselves to get angered by disparaging comments, and we respond with a well framed, civil, and intelligently articulated comment, then we'll find that even those we strongly disagree with, will respond in kind (although there's exceptions to every rule).
Strange things happen on the internet. A liberal once claimed that the Tea Party was anarchistic. Go figure.
