Forum Post: What is wrong with the Police's use of force against protesters?

Number 1 There has not been one person killed who has been killed in all of the protests. There have been people killed in the Occupy camps through drug use on the other hand. There have been only a few serious injuries, but nothing permanent.

Number 2 The police are widely criticized for using pepper spray, but my question is why criticize them for using it. Out of all the tools the police have, pepper spray is the only tool in their box which will not cause permanent injuries. I would rather see the police spraying the pepper about then using clubs on protesters.

Number 3 The OWS protesters have been very aggressive towards police. In some videos, I hear the OWS protesters yelling profane insulting language and even crazy stuff like "shoot me now". For the most part, the police did not lose their temper. Most videos I see is of officers keeping their cool.

I would be very thankful for having the police force we have today. Is it their job to control crowds and did they do their job during the protests these last few months? They most certainly did. They not only protected the general public, but they also protected the protestors. It is the job of the police to keep things safe and orderly. If they were not there, then we might have seen something in NYC similar to what happened in Oakland...burning buildings...

When you see a member of the NYPD, do not disrespect them. They are the heros of 9/11...they protect 8+ million people. If you got hit with a little NYPD pepper spray then be thankful. Pepper spray is a weapon of peace which does not cause permanent injury although it may hurt like hell. Thank god they are using it otherwise think of what they could be using to control a rowdy crowd.

In this video below of the Wheeler street party, you can see the tactics employed in these protests have been standard crowd control techniques.

Dont hold anything against them.

  1. Yet. There have been serious injuries requiring treatment in ICU.

  2. Pepper spray (tear gas, etc.) can and has caused permanent eye damage.

  3. Corporate media coverage of OWS and other occupations is focused on denigrating and destroying the movement. There was NO media coverage of 500 Oakland police in riot gear attacking a peaceful assembly.

The police face the same problems as ordinary citizens, and many support the movement.

Police are PAID not to lose their tempers. Their badge is not a licence to attack! No mater w ho yells what. Did you see th e pepper spray attack on two women who were obeying the law? The police inspector was PUNISHED by the NYPD for what he did - why was he not arrested for assault? He has a badge. 99% of police are NOT like this.

If you want the truth the fact is that the Police should be occupying with us. They are union members. They are city employees. City budgets nationwide have been crippled because of the subprime market losses and the wall street mess.
