The good done by violence is temporary, the harm done by it can never be undone.

Violence brings violence... it's the one form of civil disobedience the government knows how to deal with effectively. The side that starts the violence gives all the PR credibility to the other side by default.

i disagree it always looks worst when a government responds to the peoples violence with excessive violence

no violence!!!!!!!!

peaceful protests are much more sympathetic to the public.

use your heads!!!

only to a point...after awhile it just causes frustration to the people and they lose respect for them...it is much better to be feared then loved...

the best effect is when one side is completely non-violent and the other side is very violent. have a look at how gandhi got rid of the british.

the authorities are very good at violence, we can't beat them at their own game.

i dont know much about gandhi but that probably had more to do with a people against foreign occupiers this a american on american thing so I would need a better example

If you don't even know then why do you keep pushing for violence. How about you first educate yourself about the power of none-violence and what it can accomplish before trying to promoting a destructive path without realizing what harm it will cause.

ok I have a good idea next time a murderer shoots somebody dont call the cops go confront him and tell him to come along to jail peacefully...the government is attacking protesters and your best bet for the future is to believe you can sit down and tell big bad congress to leave...

I'm not sure what you are trying to say there.

think outside the box (creatively)

Nice clip.

Actually this thread is a good demonstration of the repression of empathy. Without the basic information the basic empathy that should occur is side tracked into apathy and a small focus on one concept.

Why would the movement need to be violent? Did Wall Street Lobbyists need a single cell terror movement to get politicians to act like whores? We can look to the various entrenched special interests, seek commonalities among the lot and use the existing corruption to serve our will. A whore likes money, so does a politician. Why are we trying to sweet talk politicians when all they want is money? Time for OWS to run down the list of special interests groups and make some friends; time to talk to some lobbyists! [giggle]

http://web.archive.org/web/20101205055529/http://sociology.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/change/science_nonviolence.html "But given the freedoms, civil liberties, and voting rights achieved by a long line of American egalitarians and liberals, there is no end that could be justified by violence, property destruction, or armed struggle in this country. Such actions undercut the democratic rights won by past egalitarians and play into the hands of the government, which has the power to isolate and defeat any violent movement. Furthermore, property damage and armed struggle of any kind are overwhelmingly rejected by the vast majority of the American people. Due to their appreciation of the freedoms they do enjoy, and despite the economic unfairness they recognize and experience, average Americans are repelled by violent political acts, whether by right wingers or left wingers. If the goal is to build a larger movement that connects to a strategy to take over and transform the Democratic Party, not just to force the authorities to react to one or another provocation with slight reforms, then violence makes no sense. It is therefore both immoral and counterproductive for American egalitarians to employ violent strategies. Or, as Cesar Chavez used to say about violence when he was leading the farm worker's movement, it's wrong and it's stupid."

Ya know, if OWS becomes even more violent (which it will because some idiots cannot help themselves), OWS will be crushed and taking Obama & Pelousy with it! Go ahead, make the republicans day, OWS-ers. Don't fall into the trap.

We have to try nonviolent methods first.

What are a bunch of latte-sipping hipsters with iPads going to do against the military + republican citizens who are armed to the teeth?

[-] 1 points by Frizzle (520) 12 years ago

why would republic citizens use weapons when the protesters are fighting for their rights as well. Doesn't make much sense does it.
