Forum Post: We need to get a list of demands finalized

When is the Occupy Movement going to get their thesis together to nail on the door of Congress? This lack of a single focused list of demands is beginning to hurt the movement.

This...

...shows we are making an impact, but the it still leaves too much power in the hands of congress. It's like saying the kids get to regulate how much candy they eat. We have to make a cohesive statement of what WE want before TPTB decide what we want for us.

I also think when we do finalize these demands, we need to stay focused on ending corporate corruption of our government. This needs to be lazer surgery separating conjoined twins. The adding of demands, which a more conservative friend of mine called "a liberal wish list" only dilutes our message and turns off people who otherwise agree with and support us. We're wasting momentum. Let's get our government back. We can decide what to do with it after wards.

I respectfully disagree with your last 2 sentences. Now that many of the Arab nations have taken their old regimes down they are scrabbling around "deciding what to do with it". They are falling into tribal fighting (which is no different than left versus right etc.) and have no plan.

Syrian rebels, on the other hand, are working to formulate a plan now, BEFORE they storm the gates. They are formulating goals and objectives because they want to achieve something. They want to be successful.

Don't we?

False analogy. They are designing an entire government systems that they overthrew. We are just trying to take ours back. The framework of our republic is still workable, we just need to strip it of the special interest B.S.. I'm sorry, but these liberal wish lists: legalize drugs, forgive student debt, close all foreign U.S. bases, etc. I've seen it all, is not getting us anywhere and is alienating conservatives who are with us on the principal cooperate corruption issue. And I am Green Party and saying this. We can't move this government forward unless we end the corruption, and we can't end the corruption with these unrelated demands dragging us down. Lets get our government back and let the people vote on these other issues.

There is one demand that seems to be supported by many in the #OWS movement: End Corporate Person-hood. To learn more about a proposed Amendment to the Constitution to accomplish this demand, go to: http://occupywallst.org/forum/human-worth-amendment/

Agreed. That is the spear tip of the focus OWS should have which is ending cooperate/big business influence in our government. But we need to be very specific about how we end that, becuase the legislation suggested above still gives the politicians too much power in deciding how much is too much. There are other issues round that focus as well: Ending the revolving door policy, limiting the influence of lobbyists, re-regulating industry, etc. We need to really sit down and think about this specifically, or the government is going to throw us enough bread an circus to mollify the rest of the U.S. populace the OWS will loose support.

You sound really smart. You should be the one who goes on that Daily Show interview if you can do it.

We need a list of specific demands. This general ranting and trying to work a system that is broken is not getting us anywhere.

"DEMANDS" implies gimme!

How about "We, the people, demand and commit to work to achieve..."

Look for the Constitutional Amendment WG in a few days

I believe our democracy is broken - by money - but is not disposable.
use it or lose it

Three organizations – AMONG MANY- NRA and AARP and Tparty have been enormously successful and powerful – by using their votes- WE MUST TOO !

TOP OF MY ( long ) ISSUES LIST:

Constitutional amendment: Corporations are not people & Money is not free speech

An absolute minimum corporate tax of at least 20% , excluding all deductions

End Bush tax cuts for earnings over $250,000

Tax capital gains as income

Medicare for all

Select your issues & FIND YOUR REPRESENTATIVE & SENATORs CONTACT:

https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml
http://www.house.gov/
http://www.senate.gov/

Then, “grass roots” your issues :

get at least 2 of your friends to also email their congressman & get them to “grass roots” this through repeated generations – till Washington is covered in grass!

The key, of course, is republicans in congress

You can use www.whitepages.com/person
to look up people & addresses & zip codes. Especially in republican districts

Important Note:

they will only pay attention to zip codes in their (House) congressional district or (Senate) state

DEMOCRACY IS FOR SALE ONLY IF YOUR INACTION ALLOWS IT !

YOUR MESSAGE IS:

VOTE THE WAY I WANT ON MY ISSUES

OR

I WONT VOTE FOR YOU

Demand mark to market accounting.

[-] 1 points by JenniferBurnham (8) from Greenville, NC 13 years ago

That has nothing to do with getting corporate influence out of government. (In fact, I'm not economics expert, but I think mark to marketing/fair value accounting was what caused part of the problem with the housing bubble.)

[-] 1 points by Ooga (2) 13 years ago

Wrong! Current assets are marked to fantasy, if they are marked to market then bad banks will be insolvent. For e.g. all foreclosures are still marked to their original loan values even though they are way underwater.

[-] 1 points by JenniferBurnham (8) from Greenville, NC 13 years ago

Uhm...how does that make my statement wrong? That was what I was saying.

[-] 1 points by JenniferBurnham (8) from Greenville, NC 13 years ago

I'm afraid there are already too many small groups floating lists around that are just confusing the issues. OWS needs to come up with their lists of demands for the movement. I can't believe in all this organization, they have not had a committee settle down and sort that out.

Bullsh*t. This movement doesn't need a list of demands, it needs a single coherent theme that will rally the masses of Americans behind the movement. At that time, we can start making demands. Here is the movement's theme: Corporate greed is destroying America. It's destroying the standard of living for the middle class and those on the lowest rungs of the economic ladder.

[-] 0 points by Joeschmoe1000 (270) 13 years ago

Do you mean it needs a theme song? Or what.

No demands!

Themes!

BTW, from whom, and on what authority, do you propose to demand what ever it is that you decide on demanding?

Beginning to hurt the movement? hahaha! Beginning...

Don't forget to demand the forgiving of school debt while leaving the 98.9% holding the bag for foreclosure debt.....

[-] 1 points by JenniferBurnham (8) from Greenville, NC 13 years ago

I think I already addressed that in the "wishlist items." The focus of this movement is the separation of corporation and state, and it needs to stay that way.
