Forum Post: Violence is needed when the lines are crossed.

Im all for non violence but so far there has been nothing but violence from the cops and people do nothing. When I saw the officer walk across and spray all those students in the face as if they were insects I wondered why the hell did not anyone stand up and attack the cop? at that moment he is no longer a cop but a human who violated another human. Im all for the MLK mentality but when lines are crossed is when Malcom X action should surface. enough is enough. and its obvious that no matter what these cops do that they will not get fairly punished for their actions.

as hard as it is, violence is never needed. always there r other solution. violence perpetuates it doesn't solve

No.

We cannnot commit assault on police officers. This provides the opposition the opportunity to take pictures, and hold them up before the nation, and turn the American people against us.

I realize that if you have been bloodied at the hands of police officers, or if you have friends who have, then you are angry.

You must take a deep breath, think long term, and ask yourself, what is best for this movement?

Will I take part in creating imagery that can last forever, imagery that kills this movement even as it has just begun?

Or will I nurture my anger, and temper it with reason, and press on with this fight?

trust me i truly understand what you are saying, and I fight with myself to think that way, but i dont know if that would be my reaction of another human being violates me. im not calling for an anarchist type revolution, cause that will not help. but when situations like this happen we need to put these cops on their @sses...lets just hope it doesnt happen to me when Im down at the park

The energy and emotion that you feel is useful. Harness it. It will harden your commitment to this struggle.

But you must understand - you know what may be waiting at the park. You must be ready, and committed to doing your part - but do not assault the police, and do not destroy property.

These can be turned into icons against us.

i will never destroy property, and i dont want to be violent. trust me im very passive but there is a line when a man has to protect himself. but thats just me, it may not be the correct response but it will be mine.

if you strike an officer, you open yourself to the possibility that your GA and those who support it will wonder if perhaps you are a provocateur, sent by someone else.

maybe but enough is enough. i just see another person violating another. maybe i shouldnt be protesting

You are being trained with imagery and rhetoric to become violent. You are purposefully being pitted in situations that could very well turn violent. Don't let Occupy get a gripe on you. Think peace.

Compliance is needed to avoid violence.

When the police tell you to get off your ass and clear the area you get off your ass and clear the area!

You live up to your name, sir. The protesters who get arrested make the choice to get arrested. And that is what getting arrested looks like. Don't blame the electricity when you willing stick your finger in the socket.

damn you guys really love the police state and lack of freedom, you guys are gonna love the american dictatorship when it kicks in

[-] 1 points by commonsense11 (195) 12 years ago

Perhaps if we organized and elected independents and stopped electing corporate owned career democrat and republican politicians we could right the wrongs. The problem is the 99% are responsible for electing these idiots so we can blame ourselves.

Ok, I'm glad that I stumbled upon this post, and I ENCOURAGE ALL PROTESTERS TO REMAIN NONVIOLENT. I know it isn't easy, and I know that being a human punching bag is not why we all joined this movement, but self-control, besides massive numbers, is our number one tool!! This is what made MLK's work so pivotal, because when police act like animals, America sees who the "bad guys" really are, and they tend to give support to their fellow Americans. (Which is what happened with worldwide coverage of the Freedom RIdes)

But, the ultimate proof of this are the riots that have taken place in Italy in the past few decades by students and disenfranchised workers. They remained peaceful and were gaining leverage, GLADIO (google it!) infiltrated, committed a few acts of vandalism and violence, then planted weaponry in their camps in order to discredit the movement.... it succeeded!

Please stay peaceful, because any violence you initiate will be exaggerated and manipulated to discredit the entire movement, while making the cops seem like victims although they are the initial aggressors.

If we boycott the cops are powerless.

We have the power to make this happen...The power is in our hands. And a massive boycott will make them listen. Some suggest it will crash the economy because we have been told we need to spend. But we have been spending and it isn't working. This is about more than just economics. December 1st. Let's make this happen. What a great moment in world history to really take a stand against something, and make a difference.

If you were the cop, what would you have done differently? If you attempted to physically remove the protesters, there would have certainly been a higher chance of an injury to a protester or a cop. Once those kids washed their faces I am sure they were fine.

[-] 0 points by xposingfalsehoods (39) 12 years ago

you cant justify assault because you dont know what the reaction would be if you try to remove them. you guys are too passive, the cops are not supposed to use those action only under situations where they feel like their safety is threatened. but you guys dont mind a police state and a lose of freedom. so if I was to punch that cop in the face i would be wrong right? he would just wipe the blood off his face and he would have been alright. stop the slave mentality

[-] 2 points by Mooks (1985) 12 years ago

They obviously all knew it was coming because they had their faces all covered up. They had every opportunity to get up and walk away.

Like I said, if you were the cops there, a hard working member of the 99% tasked with removing the obstruction, what would you have done?

[-] 0 points by xposingfalsehoods (39) 12 years ago

say no...its as simple as that. on thursday i was talking to 2 cops after the march over the bridge, they were very cool and I asked them that knowing that they have to take orders, what will they do if the time ever comes when they are asked to round people up and put them in camps as they did to the japanese americans in the 40's, they said i dont know, i dont want to but I have a job to do...so basically we can go strait to concentration camps and they will do it no matter what.. its then they become the enemy

[-] 1 points by Mooks (1985) 12 years ago

I don't think there are many people in the US who would call the police the enemy because they used pepper spray, which you wash right off, to protect private property.

[-] 0 points by xposingfalsehoods (39) 12 years ago

ok so i can spray a cop in the face to protect my personal space

[-] 1 points by Mooks (1985) 12 years ago

Define personal space.

[-] 1 points by ramous (765) from Wabash, IN 12 years ago

That's what getting arrested looks like.

That guy wasn't a real cop, he is a campus cop who plays big boy policeman when something goes on at the campus. He is inexperienced in law enforcement and has little to no training when it comes to civil disturbances. That being said, OWS using any form of violence is suicide as you are outnumbered and outgunned.

I'll tell ye what, the first little piggy that unleashes pepper spray in my direction gets a permanent reminder of what America is all about...riot gear or no riot gear.
