I tell you the more I think, the more I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.

I don't know of any person who was more driven, more obsessed to DO their art. It permeated him in every respect and on every level. I have read his biograqphies and that of his friends. I appreciate his work on only a very superficial level and, as a painter, I find it a little scary to contemplate how completely it consumed him. Since I have no talent, nor schizophrenia, there is no way that it could happen to me. In any case, I would never want to live his life.

I see much more than sorrow in his work

Well, I don't think I said that. His work was the only thing that brought him anything that looked (to me) like pleasure. But it more often brought him relief from the torment, from the firestorm going on in his mind. And frequently it brought him frustration because he couldn't get it just right. Sometimes three canvases a day. He probably destroyed more art than any other painter. That was done out of frustration.

One of the reasons I can't fully appreciate him is that he was driven by color and light effects that I can't see as he saw them, because I am color blind. He was using the eye's preprocessing effects to blend color using the computational mechanism that we have only recently discovered somewhere between the retina and the brain. I either don't sense color the way others do or I process it differently. What I see is consistent, it always the same. But what I see isn't the same as yours or his. His work is unlike the other Impressionist's work, which I can see and process OK, for the most part. A lot of his work, especially his later work, diverges from what I can process as representational, as real. I could, up to a point in his body of work, after which I start to lose the emotional connection. Many tell me his work gets better for them chronologically. Monet, who was very driven, made progress that I can appreciate right to the end. It is what it is, for me. But it can't be, what it isn't.

What I see and feel in his work...is such an intensity of love,...sometimes with sadness.. manifested in a sublime, wild, beauty. Words fail me. I diminish the paintings by the attempt.

sorrow, love and beauty...are often inseparable

"I cannot help thinking that the best way of knowing God is to love many things. Love this friend, this person, this thing, whatever you like, and you will be on the right road to understanding Him better'

Interesting documentary recently
He did not commit suicide,
he was probably killed accidentally by a teenager playing with a gun

"Oh, I am no friend of present-day Christianity, though its Founder was sublime —

I have seen through present-day Christianity only too well. That icy coldness hypnotized even me, in my youth — but I have taken my revenge since then. How? By worshiping the love which they, the theologians, call sin, by respecting a whore, and not too many would-be respectable, pious ladies. To some, woman is heresy and diabolical. To me she is just the opposite."
