Basic income is a particular form of guaranteed minimum monthly income, which gives all people access to some income irrespective of their current work performance or their past work performance. A guaranteed minimum monthly income in this sense is something which has existed in several European countries for a number of years, but basic income differs from the existing guaranteed minimum income along three dimensions: first, basic income is strictly individual, given to all people ( 18 + ) on an individual basis irrespective of their household situation; second, it is given to all irrespective of income from other sources (labor income or capital income); third, basic income is not subject to whether people are willing to work or not. It is not restricted to the involuntarily unemployed, but would be paid to everyone, including people who choose not to engage in paid work (for example, housewives, househusbands, volunteers, students, and many artists).

Funding solutions could involve a combination of the following tax increases for the wealthiest 20% or possibly redistribution of all household income above $500,000:

  • Income tax
  • Capital gains taxes
  • Inheritance taxes
  • Luxury taxes
  • Pollution taxes
  • Lottery / gambling taxes

This would coincide with the elimination of current income support programs, social security, and tax deductions

Dreaming , as in Star Trek credits , is just that , Dreaming !

I don't want anyone to starve or have no roof over them or no clothes , but living wage work is the only way I see things will get better !

Besides , I don't want to have to work so you can sleep in and watch T.V. all day , that wouldn't be fair to me !

Redistribution of wealth is stealing .

You can't steal from some one , who doesn't have the consciousness to care that they aren't paying the cost of living to their employees , to make things right .

You must convince the employer that a living wage is beneficial to not only the employees , but it comes around again to all of society .

I like it. I think people should get bonuses if they volunteer. So many people dedicate their lives to picking up after the politicians already. They feed the homeless, rescue the stray dogs and cats, wash oil-covered pelicans. These people need compensation. A guaranteed income would also encourage more volunteerism. Some just don't have the gas or money to help those in need.

Great idea and it should've been done long time ago. But you're doing it wrong. Basic income can't be funded by hard work of other people, i.e taxing the rich, they just gonna tag you as socialist and let a crowd shred you to pieces. You can't feed off other people. Basic income can only be funded off things that don't require someone to work for every $ of it. Like money from automated production, harvesting oil and other natural reserves, energy production. It doesn't matter how much money the wealthy have, IT'S NOT YOURS. That's how government is funding itself, they can just take whatever they want, from anybody they want. You are not the government, you don't have that kind of power, need to be more subtle.

I'm of the opinion that the natural resources of a nation belong to The People, that the profit that is presently going to corporations should be returned to The People. Corporations can make a tidy profit for serving The People as functionaries in extracting these resources, oil, minerals and the like, but the shareholders should be The People and the returns should revert to all such social welfare programs as are now supported by taxes. This would go some way toward relieving taxes on these industries while supplying necessary funds for our important social needs.

So I can just spend my day fishing and drinking beer, while the working stiffs pay taxes so that I can enjoy a life of leisure? Sign me up.

"possibly redistribution of all household income above $500,000."

All of a sudden there wouldn't be any household income over $500,000.

I'm so feeling this too. I can shut my business, sleep till noon, and go to the beach . Then I can do it all over again the next day.

Some of these posts never fail to amaze me .

You don't have to trust them. Watch their actions. If they jail the banksters who did these crimes against the 99%, then they are OK. If not, we keep ramping up the protests.

Don't you get it? The US is 15 TRILLION in the hole right now, we are going deeper in the hole at the rate of 1.6 TRILLION more per year. If you took all the assets of every US billionaire and the next 400 multimillionaires you would get 1.6 trillion, yep just enough to pay the deficit for one year.

Who will give you your free shit then?
