Aimless anarchists if they do not produce a leader who can take a true protest movement in a valid direction.

Perhaps you would consider our group's proposal of an alternative online direct democracy of government and business at http://getsatisfaction.com/americanselect/topics/on_strategically_weighted_policies_organizational_operating_structures_tactical_investment_procedures-448eo , for this is a small-business-bottom-up approach, not today's big-business-top-down approach, so if agreed, join our group's 20 members committed to that plan at http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/StrategicInternationalSystems/

It is a protest movement but it would be the latter (they aren't what I call anarchistic, just hating the banks whilst being directionless.) OWS may survive the winter, but I can see it becoming actually part of the furniture unless it finds a core ideal (or small set of ideals) to serious revolve around, because it doesn't really have one. Compare OWS to the civil rights movement for instance and see the difference. Perhaps it needs to find some effective leaders or good public speakers from its rank to help mould the process.

"Becoming part of the furniture" - thanks, that's a good way of putting it.

Our local peace group here in town became "part of the furniture" a long time ago. I don't mean to mock their convictions about how they ought to do things (ie, standing around with placards in small groups every once in a while), but nobody pays attention to them any more.

There is just so far that clever and witty signs can go. Eventually you do need leadership figures who can inspire and galvanize. Unfortunately, the "consensus" in OWS is that they shouldn't have any leaders because everything is going to be done through faceless general assemblies. I think the game plan is to just camp out forever until the whole world sees the rightness of their cause. Oh, if only revolutionary movements worked that way. Not even the Christians have managed to produce such results and they've been at it for 2000 years (and had a pretty awesome leader who made great speeches).

I honestly think OWS is torn between people camping out who want to start a new "religion" (way of life, lifestyle, whatever - I'm not mocking them), and people who want to actually get things done politically, which requires icky things like having articulated messages and leaders to lead them. I personally just wish that the people who want a new religion would just start a commune and get out of the way of people who still want to achieve political change.
