Forum Post: The United States of Disturbia.....Where Trolls Go To Live And To Die.

This content is user submitted and not an official statement

When did America become so fragmented? Why are solutions so difficult? Why can't our leaders compromise?

One word: Suburbia.

Since World War II, this nation has been financing the means of our own destruction. We have built highways and expressways that made it possible to live in a manner that is simply not compatible with democracy.

Consider this, in no time period since permanent dwellings can be identified (10000 BC) has man resided in this fashion. And, the reason, I would postulate, is because suburbia is a snake swallowing itself tail first.

In, "Bonfire of the Vanities," Tom Wolfe describes the innate flaw in our new normal. "Insulation! That was the ticket... 'you've got to insulate, insulate, insulate, meaning insulate yourself from those people. ... If you could go breezing down the FDR Drive in a taxi, why file into the trenches of the urban wars?"

The problems I currently see in America are problems derived from this insulation, this disconnect of people. Business transactions are now corrupt because they take place with the keystroke of a terminal....or where parties will never know one another, let alone trust one another. Politicians now shout at each other across television networks rather than doing the difficult work that is compromise.

Every problem has become someone else's problem. Suburbia has made it possible for someone to exist in his own fiefdom and never know his neighbor, never know the difficulties others face, and never realize that the system can be brutal. "There but for the Grace of God go I"" has been replaced by "There goes a deadbeat."

Rather dramatically, many Americans have shifted their reference group. The disadvantaged, minorities, and the poor have become only abstractions upon a television screen. Crime is only newsworthy when there's dirty laundry....or blood. And, "if America could just go back to it's roots, all would be OK." (Never mind the fact that exburbs didn't exist in the time of Franklin.....Benjamin or Roosevelt).

There has, therefore, developed a callousness--a de-empathization--that has strangled our progressive impulses. Yes, it is fostered by Fox News and talk radio, but it is has also been accepted by our religious institutions.....even cultured in our new suburban churches.

In an age of diverging incomes, this callousness might have been predictable, even necessary. "When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it," wrote Frederic Bastiat two hundred years ago. Sadly, plunder has not only become a way of life....it is THE way of life.

Suburbia has created it's own subculture and generations have existed there without knowing anything else. It is a throwaway mentality, very expensive to maintain, and it's contributions to the dilemmas we face in energy use and climate change cannot be underestimated. It has created it's own institutions, where communities are built upon an artificial consumer model. Shopping malls and megachurches have replaced main street and the town square. (I have written on the "New Christianity" elsewhere). The mixing of the masses has become the mingling of the same.

Most ominous of all, suburbia has spawned an entirely new breed of politician. Representing a very homogeneous, affluent, population, these skillful manipulators have created a new history of America, a new meaning for the American dream,, and innovative methods of playing upon our fears. They are, for the most part, Republicans and conservative.

But, every man for himself carries a price. We cannot all be little kings and we must learn to live together once more. Fate, and an economic collapse, have produced an era in which we must again reexamine our interrelatedness. We must learn to take note when politicians tailor their message to this electorate. We must understand the thoughts and fears of Clark and Ellen Griswold. And, we must find a way to reach out to them before it's too late.

Good article. You make some noteworthy points.Speaking of megachurches in the "burbs" .When I first moved to N.VA,I was attending a small country church. Being a city girl and locating to the 'sticks" I enjoyed the small church. The church I attended in the city I left had gone mega. Well within 10yrs time, the country church, went "mega" and I left. Within a 5 mile radius there are 3 megachurches and a 4th coming. Needless to say with the traffic and all,Im ready to get the hell out of N.VA..

I don't go to church anymore. I don't mind and I don't miss it. These megachurches do nothing to help or bring the community together.

OWS has done more for communities with "occupyhood and foreclosed homes in 2 months, then these megachurches have done in 5yrs since the foreclosures began.

OWS is the People's Church!

Mimi, I feel and have felt for a long time that belief in God is a great thing, but organized religion is one of the worst. Why is the Catholic Church so wealthy? With all the ills of the world and what Jesus Christ was about, how is it Christian to have so much material wealth that isn't used to help the poor and suffering? I have a pretty good theory as to why, so my reply is strictly rhetorical. Has any faith pledged solidarity with the OWS movement? Sure seems like they all should've by now. Hmmm... ~ Thunderclap

Let us not forget the TV churches. Suburbia is only one small part of the booming cult of materialism which came out of the WW2 death factories switched over to mass-manufacture of consumer goods and toys. How many people in suburbs and in cities attend TV churches? I knew one such 'born again christian'.... and the propaganda these TV churches spewed for decades created the political right-wing movement, which then radicalized the republican movement. Don't like one TV church? Switch to another channel... don't like that one? Switch to another channel: As if all religions are consumer products.

The selling of status and affluence as happiness through ownership of property, material possessions being idolized into icons of cultural sacredness happened because of centralized mass media which is 100% COMMERCIAL.

This commercial consumer-manufacturing vicious cycle created the culture you were born into until now, the only form of human communication left is buying and selling and gambling.

This mass sociopathic insanity has advanced to the point where if you are not trying to SELL something to someone else:: the person you are trying to communicate with cannot understand what you are saying. You brainwashed masses only understand something being 'sold' to you: not communicated or shared or told or enlightened or revealed. Your brains are so programmed by the consumer automatic selection process of the supermarket mentality going down the aisle as you automatically discount and ignore the thousands of products being offered to you to buy and swallow... that if something on that shelf is not being SOLD to you... for a profit.... by people with a hidden agenda... you don't even see it as not a consumer item which someone is trying to SELL you on... You actually believe if something doesn't cost any money: it's worthless. Water is worthless, air is worthless, life is worthless: only diamonds and gold are worth anything. That is how sick and insane your worship of money is.

This sociopathic insanity of consumer mass manufacturing culture has created the insanity of the religion of 'consumer choice'. The TV, the radio and now the internet, the supermarket, the stores, the shopping centers, the mall, are your only forms of interaction with each other as consumer 'choices'. called buying and selling. Likewise your religions are a matter of personal preference and consumer 'choice': Don't like one church? Go to another. Don't like that one? Leave..

What this does it is destroys all COMMITMENT to anything. You are not committed to anything. You do not commit yourself to a church, or a community or a company or a consumer product or a religion or a belief, or an ethic, or a human value, or an idea.... unless you 'like' it... and if you don't 'like' it... you LEAVE... Which is exactly what all of you do here on internet forums: if you don't like what someone else says? You LEAVE. You run away: and convince yourself that you are leaving because you are so SUPERIOR a selective consumer that you have the FREEDOM to 'choose' to go somewhere else, the FREEDOM to 'choose' who to speak with... the FREEDOM to have your own personal Kingdom, your own personal home, your own car, your own TV, your own clothes, etc etc ad nausea...

This in turn creates you as a mass bunch of snobs: each one snubbing and turning up their noses at the others because they don't 'like' what the other person says or is or how they behave or what they believe in...

George Carlin informed you boobs a long time ago that you have no 'freedom' the only freedom you have left is to choose which flavor ice cream you want. What he failed to mention is that the ice cream is being SOLD to you in order to keep you fat, lazy and stupid.

The fact is: as long as all of you keep on fooling yourselves about how much 'freedom' of 'choice' you have, and as long as all of you 'choose' to LEAVE every time someone says something you don't like: None of you will communicate with anyone. The only person you are communicating on these internet forums is yourself. Nobody else listens to what you say, and you do not listen to what everybody else says... but all of you want to have the ILLUSION that you are being listened to, and the ILLUSION that you have something to say, and the ILLUSION that all of you are 'educated' ... so all of you fools continue to babble to one another while not listening to each other and not reading the drivel which is being posting: In one eye and out the other, in one ear and out the other'. Garbage in, garbage out .

Human communication is not something you can 'choose' to ignore. It is not something that is 'sold' to you, and it is not something for you to 'buy' or 'swallow' or 'sell' it is not a fucking advertisement made glamorous to lure you into agreement. Human communication is not something that is mass-manufactured. Human communication and humans should not be EXPECTED to be identical to each other... yet each one of you imbeciles becomes upset and LEAVES the discussion the instant you discover that the one you are communicating with does not hold the exact IDENTICAL views you have. Your kind of mass lemmings expect 6.8 billion human beings to be a homogeneous quart of milk: all lumped together: all agreeing on everything, all one single mass... when in reality not one of you fucking zombies agree with anyone else but yourself, and not one of you dolts listen to anyone but yourself.

The idea! That an internet 'forum' is based upon dolts dropping their worthless comment... and then LEAVING the forum: never to come back... makes any human sense... the IDEA of hiding who you are so nobody knows how old you are, where you live, what race, ethnicity, religion, culture, nationality, etc you have... The IDEA of 100% anonymous fools hiding from each other, thinking that this medium of secrecy will do anything but spawn more paranoid idiots who are terrified of telling anyone ANYTHING but lies...

Is an example of how far your mass-consumer culture of personal 'choice' has led you all astray from the goal of becoming a human being: not an identical machine.

All of you are are consumers: none of you create anything or make anything or build anything... but that is only HALF of your life: the other half you don't want to look at: the other half of eating is SHITTING: the other half of buying consumer products is industrial waste and pollutions and garbage and landfills and smog and poisoned oceans and mercury contaminated fish. Did you know that all the fish bigger than sardines in the ocean now have toxic level of mercury in them?

What else do any of you do except eat and SHIT? drink and PISS? The other half of your stinking life is taboo! We must never mention what you produce from all your consumption... Horrors... those forbidden words! Mustn't look at them! Mustn't look at what you CREATE and PRODUCE. Garbage in garbage out. What do you think internet forums are? They are landfills of the toxic shit and piss coming out of your consumer brains, filling up the internet with trillions of meaningless toxic words every year... And what do you do after you dump your loads of mental shit and piss on these forums? You LEAVE... never to come back again to the site of your dumping grounds except to dump more loads of bullshit, until nobody reads or cares what you write or post anymore, because billions of other imbeciles are doing the exact same thing and expecting to be recognized as the wisest most enlightened creatures on earth.

Your problem is not looking at yourself and what you do and what you produce. Your problem is the shit you create, the ugliness you create, the death you create, the devastation and destruction you create, the selfishness you create, the hate you create, the STUPIDITY you create, the arrogance you create, the smugness you create, the snobbery you create, the hypocrisy you create, the dishonesty you create, the lies you create, the misinformation you create, the disinformation you create, the propaganda you create, the dogmas you create, the narrow mindedness you create...

The internet has created THOUSANDS of trillions more lies than existed before its invention, it has created billions of sick diseased twisted people detached from all reality, it has created billions of virtual fantasies which all you zombie are living inside....

And this fucking idiot thinks he has made a 'brilliant' discovery... that the invention of suburbs degraded the quality of your society? DUUUHH. Pete Seeger noticed this over 50 years ago and sang about it in his famous song: "Little boxes'... which was before any of you freaks were born. Was he listened to? His existence was covered up as quickly as possible so the next generation of brainwashed drones wouldn't discover that life before their time was a thousand times BETTER instead of worse.

I agree with you. Is it possible that it can be re-worded so that you are not insulting US but informing US. Most of US here on the website understand where you are coming from, but insult to OUR already current injury is not neccesary. Unless you want to sound like a troll....Calm it down a bit.

[-] 1 points by MiMi1026 (937) from Springfield, VA 12 years ago

I totally agree. I said to my husband today" I wish there was one day that I could step out my door and not spend a penny" That day is coming soon.

SHIT. You've got my write in vote for President of all of this SHIT! PS:My brother had a couple of Pete Seeger's records, wasn't there also a woman folk singer that wrote a song about 'tiny little houses full of ticky tacky?' I'm 47 and think I remember my Uncle playing it in his van when I was really small.

[-] 1 points by economicallydiscardedcitizen (761) 12 years ago

Same response from the government, same candidate up for vote who is a member of the one party, two party system. So what's the point? SHIT

[-] 0 points by turak (-812) 12 years ago

So what are you going to do about it? Go complain to someone who listens to whiners. Not here.

[-] 1 points by economicallydiscardedcitizen (761) 12 years ago

OWS is mainly about waking people up first and then getting them to act, whether it is by demonstrating, petitioning, signing petitions, contributing and participating in the forums here and at www.occupytogether.org or anywhere that participating and interacting with others allows for discussion about the status quo and doing something no matter HOW small to effect change and elimination of SHIT.

[-] 1 points by turak (-812) 12 years ago

Well I'm beyond that crap: I prefer doing to talking. talk is cheap. talk is worthless. You want to keep on jabbering and do nothing: don't do it with me; do it with others who will spend the rest iof their lives jabbering and doing nothing.

You're wasting your time because you're all a bunch of cowards afraid to do anything.

This is your unspoken hypocrisy which all of you believe in like a religion...

You are 'hoping'.. 'dreaming'... that if you 'talk' to enough people and 'enlighten' them... then there will be a huge groundswell of a MAJORITY of the populationi... which you can HIDE inside, and thus escape all notice and be free form being picked out as standing up alone as an individual who has any guts and does anything. That will never happen. You're a scared herd animal: waiting for your imaginary herd to hide inside: it ain't gonna happen. Only if you stop waiting for a herd will you ever do anything by yourself.

Words without action is what all trillions and trillions of the blogs and posts and text messages and cell-phone calls ars all about. You see anyone of those brainwashed ninnies doing anything except talking ? NOT NOT NOT NOT

[-] 1 points by MiMi1026 (937) from Springfield, VA 12 years ago

I don't just talk, I walk. I believe in action and have taken it.

[-] 0 points by turak (-812) 12 years ago

Good. Let us know what you're doing: maybe we can do the same thing and take action with you...

That is... if you have done anything... and if you can tell us what you've done and are doing.

If you haven't: then you're just another blabbermouth troll.

[-] 0 points by economicallydiscardedcitizen (761) 12 years ago

I disagree. Because of OWS I've signed a number of petitions started by participants here at OWS's site and elsewhere. Small steps to change are better than none whether as a sole practitioner changing one's lifestyle or as a group doing the same. Also, change is not static but evolving and experimentation with awareness can allow for positive change or else why do you think intentional communities from The Shakers to several in the 1970's up to now were started with some existing to this day? While change and interpretation of what desired change occur individually and communally in several places it allows for future possibilities if the military industrial complex and pathological individuals within it don't destroy us first.

[-] 1 points by MiMi1026 (937) from Springfield, VA 12 years ago

Those crooked politicos on the hill don't even look at petitions. They throw them in the waste pail, just like hr's TRASH resumes'.

One must take action with their feet, their pocketbook. I no longer buy gifts,I make them. I grow a victory garden. I don't shop walmart. I don't pay my dues to megachurches,I give to the needy, the real "needy" living on the streets and in shelters.

Action speaks louder then words! However I do write my words,MY THOUGHTS here and on other blogs to encourage others to take ACTION!!

[-] 1 points by economicallydiscardedcitizen (761) 12 years ago

Yes, we can all make changes no matter how small. I emphasize small because unemployed people ( like me) and my husband (work injured) and barely surviving on $985 per month for the last year and 11 months have limited resources but we do the most we can even receiving cash assistance from a long time friend who believes as we do- help the people right in front of you, share your food, clothes etc.

If the so called 'elites' would take a cue from kindergarten and learn to share, play nice in the sandbox and help your neighbor the world would be a better place!

i gave you the lyrics because I know you like to read and below is the youtube for the thinking impaired. enjoy one of the best songs I have heard in a while. lyrics by, malvina reynolds -

little boxes "Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of ticky tacky,1 Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes all the same. There's a green one and a pink one And a blue one and a yellow one, And they're all made out of ticky tacky And they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses All went to the university, Where they were put in boxes And they came out all the same, And there's doctors and lawyers, And business executives, And they're all made out of ticky tacky And they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course And drink their martinis dry, And they all have pretty children And the children go to school, And the children go to summer camp And then to the university, Where they are put in boxes And they come out all the same.

And the boys go into business And marry and raise a family In boxes made of ticky tacky And they all look just the same. There's a green one and a pink one And a blue one and a yellow one, And they're all made out of ticky tacky And they all look just the same.

[-] 1 points by JesseHeffran (3903) 12 years ago

the first time i heard it was five years ago, and i put it there more for all the forum roamers than for you. I like to believe that there are people out there as interested as I am to learn new things. I guess I sent it to you for you to know that not all thirty year old Americans are as simple minded and having low attention spans as you may believe.

[-] 0 points by turak (-812) 12 years ago

so? Connect the facts. You're not connecting the facts.

[-] 1 points by JesseHeffran (3903) 12 years ago

i believe the facts are that it is advantageous for special interests to make us think we need big business and big government to take care of us. but the truth is that we are able to take care of ourselves. And we have the power, non violently mind you, to shape our own futures with out big institutions and fake choices. BUt by your standards I'm probably wrong but fuck it a gave it a go.

[-] 0 points by turak (-812) 12 years ago

Now connect your words to your actions. Be a man of your word. Do what you say and say what you do: otherwise you're just full of bullshit.

The word belief is used by people who are brainwashed into 'believing' in a religious dogma or 'believing' in political propaganda. Either you know something or you don't. Stop believing: stop using the word 'belief'; it's for suckers and zombies: not doers who connect their words to their actions. You either do it or you don't do it. Talk is cheap. Talk is worthless.

Thanks. Yes, I feel that these megachurches, talk radio, Fox news, and exercise centers attact people because they produce this sticky form of artificial community that is so lacking in suburban life. Believe me....I'm one of them.

I have never seen half of my neighbors from the waist down. They open their garage doors remotely.....illegals care for their yard.....they don't go to the park in our development....they work 10 hour days and their kids are in daycare.....

Have we become victims of the American dream? Suburbia is all about "NEW." And, the problem with that is that things can't stay new.

There is a transience that pervades the entirety of it. There is a provincialism that I find almost other worldly.

No, we have become a suburban society that requires automobiles, long commutes, traffic delays, and expensive highways.

[-] 1 points by JPB950 (2254) 12 years ago

There are some issues that do not allow for compromise. Blaming societies complex problems on suburbia seems simplistic. You could probably make a case for blaming any other change that has occurred over the last few decades, population increase, or women working outside the home for example. The fact that two events happen simultaneously doesn't mean causation.

Not that it matters much, even if you're right, what do we do? There is little chance of going back to the way things were at the beginning of the 20th century. Do we force people back to the relative isolation of farms, where over 90% of the population lived a century ago? Move them to the congestion of the city where emotional or psychological isolation seems to be the rule?

There have been three fuels for the neoconservative movement that has turned politics into war and our nation the battleground.

These are money, race, and abortion.

These are suburban predilections and they are now fueling a secondary, more radical, intransigence in the form of the Tea Party.

Occupy the 'burbs!

Maybe you should watch the film "Brazil". I think we are closer to that sort of society than we might think. It is all taken to extremes for sure but the underlying theme seems to be pretty close to today's situation.

[-] 0 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

So did Timothy McVeigh....are you sure you want to make that comparison?

[-] 1 points by paulg5 (673) 12 years ago

Because ignorance is a rampant disease. A disease spread by the psychopathic personalities that dominate the world. Examples of PPs: Gaddahfi. al-Assad. George W. Bush. Saddam Hussein. bin laden. Cheney. Rove. Boehner. McConnell. Ryan. Cantor. Grover Norquist. The Republican/Tea Party governors of the U.S. Tea Party people. Fox News pundits. O'Reilly. Limbaugh. People who work for Wall Street. K Street lobbyists. Most CEOs. The Crazy Target Lady. Trolls.

Did suburbia create income inequality or was it vice versa? oh, and you forgot about the SUV's, you know, the rugged individual's preferred vehicle for prowling the urban jungles of suburbia.

[-] 0 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

Suburbia has been driven by two things......envy and race.

If they were still alive I'd like to see B.F. Skinner and Konrad Lorenz have a discussion about what you wrote...

[-] 0 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

Skinner moved to suburbia and killed himself.

[-] 0 points by economicallydiscardedcitizen (761) 12 years ago

I think B.F. Skinner's 'Walden Two' has some viable and interesting ideas whether or not the author committed suicide.

This was one of the most pointless and stupid societal pieces I have ever read. Please never post again. I like suburbia, I don't want to have to live next to black people and welfare recipients.

Fox news, republicans, and any other people who disagree with us are the devil.

[-] 0 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

Your devil may actually be your savior.

[-] 0 points by fandango (241) 12 years ago

Keep people in cites so the govt can have complete control over them? Are you nuts?

[-] 1 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

No, keep the suburbanites in disturbia so that they will stop screwing up the country. City or rural......that is a nice reality. Suburbia......that is fantasy.

[-] 0 points by paulg5 (673) 12 years ago

A bit harsh to lump all of suburbanites into idealized Clark and Ellen Griswold's lol! Historically cultures throughout the world have been expanding for centuries. In the US the western pioneers were the first suburbanites, they did fine without strip malls. The real problem is corporations need to decentralize and promote expansion and supply jobs wherever one chooses to live. I moved from a suburb 5 years ago to a more rural suburb and in just five years a strip mall and a wall mart super center was built right in the middle of a recession. This is exactly what I was trying to get away from. All we need now in this community are corporations other than retail to set up shop so we can afford to pay our cracker box palace mortgages.

Trolls are not really bad. We're just drawn that way. I did not have a choice. I was infected by a Borg Troll. Now I must mate with 7 of 9.

[-] -1 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

How does a borgtroll clear his throat?

==========================================================

by farting.....

or with a cock.

Feingold shall assimilate the borgtrolls and all will be one.

[-] 0 points by Puff6962BorgTroll (28) 12 years ago

Yes, I agree. I think Feingold is the long awaited Jewish Messiah. Our long struggle is finally over. Israel will become the world leader, after they nuke Iran back to the stone age, with G-d's celestial neutrons and gamma rays.

[-] -1 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

Iran is due for a little hellfire and damnation whether by those of Jewish decent or those of European decent.

When the communists gained control of China in the 40's many communities forced people to come together for the evening meal. They socialized.

[-] 3 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

Lord, how can you twist a very tame message about the drawbacks of our suburban hell and compare it to communist totalitarianism. You must live in the exburbs.

[-] -1 points by MVSN (768) from Stockton, CA 12 years ago

I'm not twisting anything. And "suburban hell"? That is tame?

[-] 1 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

Ok, suburban warm zone.

[-] 0 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

I revised....did I remove the hell reference?

[-] -3 points by brettdecker (68) 12 years ago

Yo Puff, your version of compromise is when Repubs and Conservatives just bend over and take your Leftist agenda without even the courtesy of a reach around.

[-] 2 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

Actually, some of my ideas are very conservative.....Eisenhower conservative.

Of course, Ronald Reagan would be a little Stalin by the current definition of conservatives.

You must be assimilated.

[-] 0 points by puff6962 (4052) 12 years ago

Republicans avoid reacharounds....that would be cheating. But, for some reason, they love to swallow.
