The First Amendment is not meant to protect just any large gathering of people. It’s meant to protect peaceful and lawful assemblies. Sorry OWS
Tell that to the families that tried to bury their , (our) , fallen warrior who's final goodbyes were protested down from across the way !
The U.S.Supreme Court said it was O.K.
All speech is allowed at any time any where ?
I didn't vote that way !
Common sense needs to be made law ???
Also ;
Don't forget that "any large gathering of people." = "The People"
Conundrum or common sense ?
ropeknot, the justices suggested using local laws to create buffers around the funerals to keep the military funeral protesters away and protect the funeral. These protesters (Westboro Baptist Church) are disgusting but as far as i know haven't been violent.
This is why we are here this is why you are needed.

A statement from Memphis authorities reaffirming their policies relating to their citizens' right to lawfully protest, could help prevent another abuse of power. Quotes below are from the epilogue of the book "Protectors of Privilege: Red Squads and Police Repression in Urban America" by Frank Donner (a civil liberties lawyer)
"...Mayor Wyeth Chandler ordered the police to burn all the files of the Domestic Intelligence Unit (DIU, as the local red squad was called) and to abolish the unit altogether."........"In compliance with the mayor's order, 180 boxes of files were reportedly destroyed on September 10, 1976, at the very time the ACLU was in court to obtain a restraining order to preserve the files..."..............."embarrassing documents were unearthed in the basement of a building formerly used by the red squad that had escaped the mayor's destruction order..."...........(result:) "...a restrictive settlement decree used as a model in other litigation and legislative efforts." Jojobean, The world is upside down for you, the protesters are violent, the police peaceful. The conservatives giving and charitable, the lefties, selfish and lazy.
Who's livin' in a fool's paradise? The world turns day by day.
The mere fact that Bloomberg picks and chooses what demonstrations get megaphones shows his disrespect for the 1st Amendment. Furthermore, the permit system was meant to merely facilitate logistics, approval was supposed to be 95% automatic. Lil' Nappy Bloomberg thinks his thumbs up/down is his royal right.
Sorry carlitini99.
I don't think and city mayor of any city ever any approved for any group to camp out in public city parks. Come on you know what OWS really is, a bunch of sissy anarchist, college students (and profs) who like to dabble in communism.
