Dear friends,

Tomorrow I will swear in as a Peace Corps volunteer in Togo, West Africa. It turns out your protest movement began the day after I left the US for this country. September 17th, 2011, was the first full day I spent in Togo. I write to you from a hotel in Lome, awaiting tomorrow's ceremony and my village of 600, who are anticipating my arrival Friday morning.

I would be in New York City right now. You are doing the work I was working toward for the last five years in the US. You are doing the work I would be doing with you if I was still in the States. You are doing the work that will give me a reason to return to the US in two years, to work alongside you.

Until then I am with you in spirit, in enthusiasm, in shared experience. THANK YOU so much for making this happen. I was seeking this for so long, and it's such a comfort to know it's happening, even if I can't participate in the way I would like to.

Peace and good hard work to you all!

Have been to parts of West Africa myself. You will see true poverty and come back a different person. Hope you have a great experience and meet lots of wonderful people.
