Forum Post: "Stomping out capitalism"?

The OccupyWallSt.org repository's description is "Stomping out capitalism, one line of code at a time".

I couldn't find this on the "about" page, and most of the OWSers I've talked to are actually in favor of capitalism, so is this really the goal of the movement?

The Oakland protestors marched behind a banner that said "death to capitalism," the web site wants to stomp it out, but every time I have brought this up in these forums, I'm told that I'm making too much out of one person's opinion, and the movement is really broader than that. Sorry, that doesn't cut it with me any more. OWS, you will be held accountable for the words you use, and we will assume that you mean what you say. Deal with it.

Capitalism and money is the root of all evil!

Government should be able to make sure everyone has an equal share...

I'm not sure, but I suspect that "EXPOSED" is trying to create a bad name for OWS. Have you ever asked what is the root of money?

To me, "death to capitalism" means "death to consensual agreements, cooperation and private property", a notion I cannot endorse. I had a socialist phase in my early days, but it was getting harder and harder to defend it morally and pragmatically. Compassion, not compulsion. You don't get any moral cred from me by forcing people to do what you think is right.

Well said.

The love of money is the root of all evil.

Our money should be created by our government and spent into circulation. We should not borrow the use of our own money and pay interest on it to the private 'banksters." Our money is OUR asset not the asset of private banks - who create it out of thin air,

We should be chanting "WHOSE MONEY - OUR MONEY! ! !"

Capitalism is great, but the people need to keep it in check ! If we all had gotten together like this years ago, we would have the type of unions we need in this country, not the no good ones we have now, after all, this movement is a union, just not a corrupt one. It is a union of the people for the people and by the people. If the companies decided to go elsewhere for cheaper labor, then it is as I've said before; Start new companies here and don't buy from the ones that have left!

There are many in the movement who are anti-capitalist. The idea being that "corporate greed" is not just some deviation from the properly functioning economy but is a necessary part of our economic/social structure.

No. I think the movement is about more fairness in the economy. In other words, a living wage, fair taxes, money out of politics, reinstate Glass-Steagall, etc.

No, it's the goal of socialist-leaning AdBusters.

That's right. Justine Alexandra Roberts Junney, the author of this site's software, has chosen that as the "motto" of the project.

I couldn't disagree more.

Alright, then. Thanks for your reply. I guess I'll take my demonstrations against corruption elsewhere.

It is the goal of adbusters, moveon and Soros

"most of the OWSers I've talked to are actually in favor of capitalism"

Well you haven't spoken with me or a large group of us...

[-] 2 points by freedomplz (11) 12 years ago

that's because you probably confuse capitalism with corporatism or crony capitalism. We have NEVER had capitalism so how could we stomp something out we never had..

freaking OWS crowd is getting as bad as the tea baggers....everyone is so stupid....but I guess that's what public schools do to you......
