Sneak amendment would strip pesticide protections

Call your Senator now

Senators will vote TODAY on a bill that would strip EPA’s ability to protect our waterways from pesticides. Your call will make a difference.

Dear Mary,

Right now, the Senate is considering a bill that would strip critical pesticide protections from federal law. This proposal has appeared before as stand-alone legislation, and was put on hold by outraged Senators who understood what was at stake.

In a blatant end-run, it’s now appearing as an amendment that’s been tacked onto — of all things — the China currency legislation that’s up for a vote today.

Take Action» Please call your Senator right now, their offices will be open late! Let them know that exempting pesticides from our nation’s strongest environmental laws is unacceptable.

Pesticides are mostly regulated under a notoriously weak, industry-friendly law: the Federal Insecticide Fungicide Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). But stronger environmental statutes like the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act also address pesticides in ways that allow for better science, more locally appropriate solutions and less industry influence.

The pesticide lobby wants to keep all regulation under FIFRA, because they know how to sidestep and subvert this statute.

Call your Senator now» Without public outcry the pesticide lobby may get away with their maneuverings to exempt pesticides from the Clean Water Act. The Endangered Species Act could be next.

Thank you for joining us in this national movement to hold the line against pesticide lobbyists, while calling for better science and more – not less – protection.
