Forum Post: Please, Please, Think about this

Food banks are low and demand is high. It’s the season of the year when donations to the homeless are urgent. Winter is here and it’s cold. If you have a home and resources of your own, please do not consume what would otherwise be useful to our hungry, homeless population. Do not take a meal, a blanket, a tent, gloves, socks if you are able to provide for yourselves. Please let these limited resources go to those who really have an urgent need. This will be the downfall of public support for the OWS movement if it is seen that you are taking from the desperate, poor and homeless just so you can make a political statement.

Food banks ARE low. Why doesn't the OWS take the over HALF MILLION they have in donations and perhaps FEED and HELP the POOR? That's what people do. They HELP each other.

I was astounded to find out that OWS is requesting donations of paninis, vegan foods of all sorts FOR THEMSELVES. Do you know the cost of that food? They could take that money, buy the protesters hot dogs and peanut butter sandwiches and donate the MONEY to the local food bank.

The selfishness of the donations that OWS is astounding to those of us watching it from the outside. Those in NEED are much more important than the 1%.

I agree

Priorites are definitely misplaced..........How sad. What keeps going through my head is that this is "all about me"...."gimme gimme".....and they are blind to it. Make a difference. Stop worrying about the 1%. You can not change that no matter how hard you try. BUT you can make a HUGE DIFFERENCE in the life of the homeless/poor/needy.

If I were there protesting and I received blankets, warm clothing, warm food, etc...........I would immediately march down the block and give it to someone who has less than me. I have a HUGE HEART.....which is so seldom seen anymore. This OWS protest proves it every day it goes on. It brings tears to my eyes to see and hear this selfishness.

Please have the courtesy to re-donate the clothing. I work with the homeless and they are suffering right now.

Food banks will accept any sort of contribution. They don't "special" order vegan, organic or free range. Anything you can give is accepted.

Support food banks not OWS

Use the power at OWS with signs to alert people to donate to food banks. Not for the OWS protesters, for the hungry. If a sign like that is picked up by the AP it can have a great impact all over the country. Instead of bickering about using the donations to OWS inspire people to do something in thier communities. INSPIRATION That is also the power of OWS.

It would be nice to see a table at OWS where OWS participants can put their money where their mouth is and donate to the less fortunate. How about the bottom 1%? How is this movement helping them?

Like it or not, the trolls have brought up a good point. Instead of banning and silencing them to get this post out of sight and out of mind, you should have a discussion about this.

"Trolls"... what? Is that someone who has a different point of view?

[-] 1 points by SSJHilscher (75) from Madison, WI 12 years ago

Here, pretty much. Have you read the forum rules? It forbids any alternative opinions.

[-] 1 points by Scottsdale (6) 12 years ago

Yikes! I just read them. Sounds like the moderators are open minded so long as we all agree with their point of view. Anyway, I have a big heart for the poor and the homeless. I hope this movement does not lead to more suffering this year due to lack of food and warm clothing donations.

I believe in helping those who are NOT of able bodied/mind, the sick and the elderly. Unfortunately, others take resources away from these folks simply because they can. They dilute the effectiveness of charity. I see a lot of students at OWS with cell phones, iPads, iPods, etc standing in the food and services line. Obviously, they could provide these things for themselves. They need to be very careful not to take a meal from the mouth of a truly desperate person. I fear that the food banks will be starved due to all the resources spent at OWS.

No, voluntarily helping others is bad, didn't you get the memo? We need the government to coerce the 1% into helping them.
