Forum Post: OWS Core Purpose?

I'm a bit confused, I'm a half supporter, big pro for parts, vehemently against others, but these seem to be periphery causes of OWS. What is the core, central ideal, or is this movement merely trying to be a cure-all?

It's one thing to post a list of concerns on a web site (that pretty much only supporters will ever visit). But when there is virtually no support of that agenda in the broader public protests, it's pretty meaningless.

I've said all along that I thought the majority of Americans would agree with the basic principle of reforming campaigns and cleaning up corruption. But that's not what they're hearing because, for the most part, that's not what's being said. The message is diluted and scattershot, and comes off as nothing but whining.

No support? LOL

We should get the declaration out to the public so that everyone can see it and can stop saying "they don't have any goals." I am sick of hearing the media say that no one knows what we want. I know that people who follow OWS know what it stands for but I think the problem is that we are hoping that more people are going to do their HW and find out what this movement stands for objectively. It is clear to me that people are so used to being feed the information and told what to believe that they are incapable of doing their own research. I don't blame the masses because they have been conditioned to behave this way so that they are helpless and easily convinced. So, even though I hate to say it but I think we have to feed the people the information because otherwise they will never come around. The main stream media is going to continue to negatively portray OWS and the middle class Americans, the full 99% will remain living in the darkness.

I went to schooland seem to remember that 100% is used as a whole thing. Remove 1% and we have an absolute which is 99%. Now please clarify in a simple pie chart the entire 100%, split into slices that equal what % of the American population by income. If this is to hard, pleaseput up a comma or tab delimited data file. I am a believer that numbers if cant lie. Only people lie. The purpose of this for me and many others is to be able to put your data on this info alone alongside other data so I can compare. I can't put my mind towards an idea! Your umbers don't add up and before a rational person makes a life altering desicion they should be able to analyze! I am mathematically part of the 99 %. I am not seemingly part of your group if I don't agree with you? I can't feed my family with an idea, please find a non partisan group and put forward numbers. The way to support starts with trust building and you need a lot more trust from me to gain support. If you want to win you need every oneyou can get on board.

Since you went to school then you should know that you question EVERYTHING and me throwing stuff at you wouldn't be the correct way of teaching. I want to remain as unbiased as possible but since you asked for numbers here are some you can check out:

So I looked at your list of gripes. Looks like DC is the place you should direct your anger as they facilitate and encourage many of the actions you oppose. Of course, some of the claims on the list are rather ridiculous like your student loans claims which only detracts from this movement.

beyond superficial - the movement needs a creed. I suggest that all members of the movement pledge to consider issues beyond the typical, superficial analysis prevalent in this day and age that guides much of the actions of the populace. A prime example of action is voting.

The senate needs to reflect the needs of the people. It cannot do this with 2 senators for each state regardless of size. It is insane that states as big as NY have the same number of seats as small states with less than half the population. The electoral college should be a thIng of the past now that we can easily count the popular vote. None of this matters though if we do not get wall st out of Washington and stop the 1% from buying elections.

Read the Principles of Solidarity:

The Declaration of the Occupation:

if you seriously want to know what the movement is all about.

well - this way of life is not "working" for about 99% of "us". people are waking up to that and starting to think and starting to talk.
whats next?
IMHO - OWS is people thinking and talking and hopefully coming up with new "ways"
I hope we can all remember there is not going to be "one" right way for everyone to walk away from this current "way" we call all walk away to something different. yes we can!! beautiful right? its hard to see where a revolution is going when you are in the middle of it -

I have read the "Principles of Solidarity" and I agree with everything written there. You have a long way to go from those statements to any change in American culture and society. The Declaration of Independence states "all men are create equal" but it has taken 200 years of struggle, court interpretation and political action (voting, passing laws, etc) to get close to that ideal. Since the group who makes up most of OWS doesn't vote, your goals will never bet met.

OWS is mad... That's the main message. But we already get that from Tea Partiers.

[-] 1 points by lookingfortruth88 (75) from Chicago, IL 12 years ago

really? thats all you have to say? no backing up of anything? is this the way your parents taught you to think?

[-] 1 points by FiddleDeedee (23) 12 years ago

Everyone's mad. They see the double-dealing coming out of Washington, they see a president say one thing and do another, they see the whole country going down faster than the Titanic and everyone is playing a gigantic blame game.

Does that sum it up to your satisfaction, fascist?

[-] 1 points by lookingfortruth88 (75) from Chicago, IL 12 years ago

you have a very positive outlook on the future. if we let people like you do all the talking we might be led to believe that it is worthless to live another day. thanks for showing us what you really are here to spread.
