Outlaw all campaign contributions
Some argue it can't be done. Some say even if you do it they will find ways around it.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/campfin/stories/op031897.htm
This guy says it will continue so long as government is big. Grover Norquist will say he is doing it for the better of the people but I will let you decide for yourself on that.
I say we outlaw ALL campaign contributions. Anything that can be considered a gift, service, or promise of later gift, service, payment or even future employment.
They should be held to at least equally stringent standards as federal employees. http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/restrictions-gifts-federal-employees-46809.html http://www.justice.gov/jmd/ethics/generalf.htm
And because their power is so much greater they should be held to an even higher standard of not being able to work in any industry that has benefited from legislation they have passed. Why does the government put such strong requirements on all of their employees except the elected officials. The elected officials have shown they are getting ever more corrupted by the influence so we need to remove it from them. They will not do it to themselves.
Further anyone attempting to gain favor with a current or future elected official should also face jail time. Lobbying elected or appointed officials (judges for example) should become a crime with jail time just like bribing an official because that is what it is.
There shall be an independent review of actions taken and revisions needed every year to keep the legislation as air tight as possible. The revisions to this will be put to vote by the people every year as they cannot be trusted to manage this themselves.
So how would the candidates fund their race. The US Government would provide a set dollar amount for each candidate to use during his election. Every candidate would get the same amount and they CANNOT use funding beyond that provided for their campaign. They also cannot use employees of any company being organized by that company to do their work. Each legitimate political party will also receive the same set amount of money to hold their conventions. Yes we the tax payers will carry this burden as it is the only way to make sure that our elected officials only WORK FOR US! I think we will find it is a good investment.
Under this policy there will no longer be paid for advertising. If the candidate receives any benefit from anyone the person providing the unauthorized benefit will face jail time (there are not authorized non campaign fund paid benefits). This is to prevent some one from putting on a TV ad in the opposing candidates name to get him kicked out of the election. The budget should only allow for travel expenses, a few staffers and a basic office. The candidate who runs the best campaign fiscally will win most of the time as he has to budget properly to have money to the end. Any money left at the end will be returned to the fund. Every candidate will be audited during the campaign and after the campaign and if they are found to have broken the rules their position will be for-fitted and they will go to jail. At that point the legislation should decide what happens next. So long as the jail time is stiff enough and the audit required and independent I doubt many will break the rules.
The political parties will still exist but they will no longer be able to have money beyond what they receive each year for organization and their conventions. This money will be provided by the US Government and unspent funds will be returned. They will also be strictly audited. People will still belong to parties if they want but we should see minor parties bloom allowing more options.
We do not have a national referendum here in the US so I suggest we go to each state that DOES have a state referendum and put this legislation on the next ballot in those states. If we force all of those states to have this type of law the other states will follow suit. Once all the states pass it stating that all citizens of their state can't do either of the above acts regardless of where they are at the time then the other states will have to follow.
As others have said it is that we have allowed the 1% to control our government through gifts and other things like "campaign donations". If we stop the flow of money to local, state and federal elected officials then we will remove the bulk of the influence. All other attempts to gain influence will be outlawed. No more hiring someone's cousin to gain favor. It all stops. Anyone found trying to go around the system will face jail time. We just want them to hold themselves to the same high standard that they hold the rest of the government employee's to. The crooks that choose to be elected officials for personal gain will move on and we will have better representation.
All audits and book keeping shall be held to Sarbanes Oxley Act or higher standards. If it is good enough for our public companies it is barely good enough for our elected officials.
This process does a few things:
It gives every candidate an equal chance regardless of financial resources.
It gives every Party an equal chance regardless of the size of the party. It prevents bombardment tactics and encourages candidates to take part in debates more often to talk about topics.
It will tend to elect fiscally responsible politicians.
It will eliminate outside influence except from us the voters. It prevents home builders from building a future President a home at below cost for future favor. It provides more choice of political parties
There is no more important business to this country than being certain our representatives are representing us the citizens of the United States of America the way it states in the constitution. One man one vote.
nullapars I agree that doing it at the state level isn't very clean but it is something we can actually DO! In some cases we just have to gather enough signatures and it will appear on a ballot and possibly become law! If we get one state it will be a HUGE win.
from http://www.iandrinstitute.org/Quick%20Fact%20-%20What%20is%20I&R.htm An initiative is a proposal of a new law or constitutional amendment that is placed on the ballot by petition, that is, by collecting signatures of a certain number of citizens. Twenty-four states have the initiative process (list). Of the 24 states, 18 allow initiatives to propose constitutional amendments and 21 states allow initiatives to propose statutes. In most cases, once a sufficient number of signatures has been collected, the proposal is placed on the ballot for a vote of the people ("direct initiative"). In some cases, the proposal first goes to the legislature, and if approved by the legislature, is not voted on by the people ("indirect initiative"). For constitutional amendments, 16 states allow direct initiatives and two allow indirect initiatives. For statutes, 11 states allow direct initiatives for statutes, seven allow indirect initiatives, and two states (Utah and Washington) allow both direct and indirect initiatives.

I would like to see a constitutional convention but from my understanding we would have to get 34 state legislatures to all agree it needs to happen. It seems unlikely this will happen at this point. If we start getting this legislation/amendments on the ballots and winning in a few states then I suspect we will start to see a Constitutional Convention as a possibility.
Let me reiterate why I think the state or possibly even lower county / city is the way to go. It is something WE can do. In many states we don't have to rely on a single elected official. We can do it!
Has anyone on here ever run a petition around for their town / city / state? If so then you know what it takes. Want to clean up the politics in your city? This is a good way to start.
YES - THIS SHOULD BE THE ISSUE THE OWS MOVEMENT IS CENTERED AROUND - NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT THIS. IT IS THE SINGLE ISSUE THAT IS AT THE ROOT OF ALMOST ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS. I have a website and have been talking about this for over a year now. www.UWS1.weebly.com I am for 3 reforms. Campaign finance reform, election reform where we dump the electoral college and term limits for everyone. LETS DO THIS. LETS MAKE THIS OUR MISSION. IT WOULD CHANGE EVERYTHING.
I think we should call for a constitutional convention a provision our founders made for the citizens for issues like this. Doing it on the State level would be a good start but having it done on a National level is what we need. There will be so much resistance to this by the "powers that be" doing on the state level would be very difficult if not impossible.
