Kid decides to go to school. Kid is willing to spend $150k, and freely chooses a liberal arts degree. Kid parties and does weed for 4 years. Kid is somehow surprised he can't get a job upon graduation. Kid protests, blaming the "rich."

Parent sees other parent buy McMansion, so Parent wants one too. Parent puts down 0% to 5% down on a jumbo mortgage, leveraging up 20x plus. Parent does little to no research but signs the mortgage contract anyway, speculating at the top of the market. Parent can't pay so Parent breaks his contract. Parent protests, blaming the "bank."

Kid creates Macintosh, becomes world's favorite icon.

Kid hires slave labor in china and puts common parts in shiny package. world rejoices

[-] 1 points by RillyKewl (218) 12 years ago

also true. Mike Daisey shows Woz. World cries.

Thank god we had him. Unfortunately, he just died. Note that he made his fortune based his interest in electronics and computers. Not "political science," "history," "gender studies," "English," or "psychology" (unlike the masses of students at these protests).

Jobs was a liberal arts man. Sorry.

[-] 1 points by darkhound (66) 12 years ago

In 1974, Jobs took a job as a technician at Atari, Inc. In 1975 Jobs joined a group known as the Homebrew Computer Club. Jobs founded NeXT Computer in 1985. He founded Apple, today's biggest technology company.

If a "liberal man" includes all that technical related work, cool. Then, I wonder how many such "liberal men" are among those protesting miscreants. Likely 0.

Techies are statistically the first to join grassroots movements. The movement started on the web and this website was up in concert. Should tell you something.

[-] 1 points by darkhound (66) 12 years ago

Tells me they have jobs. Dunno about the rest of the followers tho.

[-] 1 points by equazcion (688) from New York, NY 12 years ago

That's probably the truest thing you've ever said. You definitely dunno.

[-] 1 points by RillyKewl (218) 12 years ago

You're gonna tell me Jobs' resume?
Liberal arts. And yeah, it is cool. Boy, what you don't know could fill the internet. and the libraries. and the streets.

This is what democracy looks like. Once again, Sorry, Hon.

[-] 1 points by darkhound (66) 12 years ago

Sorry? Nothing to be sorry about. I am banking 450k+. Not quite top 1%, but I'm not whining. Out of sympathy, I'm just trying to impart some common sense into you underachievers.

[-] 1 points by RillyKewl (218) 12 years ago

by trashing education?

[-] 1 points by darkhound (66) 12 years ago

I'm not trashing education. I'm just trashing degrees that give you no marketable skill but charge you $150k. And I'm trashing the idiots who would somehow buy into such a system, putting themselves and their families at financial risk. At the tuition rates, the goal CAN'T be philosophical enlightenment. For most people (unless you are a Mozart or think you can be one), there has to be a risk/reward calculation with a goal towards a job. That means a degree in "family studies" or "journalism" is useless. Peace out.

eagerly awaits darkhound's list of approved interests that are most likely to yield a successful career

[-] 1 points by darkhound (66) 12 years ago

No need to wait for my list. People just need to use common sense.

[-] 2 points by equazcion (688) from New York, NY 12 years ago

But... but without you to guide us, how will the world survive? We need you, darkhound! Your high-horsed wisdom is our beacon! Without you, we will all follow the wrong path forever! Don't foresake us!

[-] 1 points by darkhound (66) 12 years ago

Unfortunately, that's what it looks like. But I am busy making my millions, so I don't have much time. Besides, to educate you miscreants would be increasing my competition. Out of sympathy, you have my few minutes and general guidance. Work with that.

[-] 1 points by equazcion (688) from New York, NY 12 years ago

No, that's not enough. There are just TOO MANY of us who seem to disagree with you. There is obviously a very serious problem here, and only you can force us right. Step up! We need you! THERE'S JUST TOO MANY OF US!

This movement is justified, it just has not gotten its voice yet. Read the following article from a Wall Street trade Journal.

YOUR NOT REVOLUTIONARIES UNTIL YOU DO SOMETHING. STANDING OUT THERE WITH SIGNS DOES NOT MAKE YOU A REVOLUTIONARY! When your done there will be a new discussion at the presidental debate but nothing that they will uphold. You will have to change things from the inside out. You need to get a hold of a Senator, and congressman in order for there to be change. They have fixed the system so that the average joe has no voice. Your votes and actions means nothing unless your on the inside. I speak the truth dont shoot the messanger.

capitalism does not support liberal arts

because it can not be made into a product that can be sold

[-] 1 points by darkhound (66) 12 years ago

Well, it can. E.g. actors, novelists, artists, playwriters, performing arts, academia. But only the very top make it because the supply demand is so out of wack in the liberal arts (every high school dummy chooses it by default).

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

it's not like the workforce needs more science majors either

[-] 1 points by darkhound (66) 12 years ago

Yes it does. Just go to silicon valley these days. You're basically guaranteed a 100k plus job if you have an engineering degree. Science is similar. Our domestic supply of such people is so weak that we have to import engineering and science majors from India and China (we don't pay them any less than their domestic counterparts). H1B visas typically max out every year.

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

I have family in san diego

[-] 1 points by darkhound (66) 12 years ago

And what's your point?

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

right so stop begging

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

I don't want to move to silicon valley for a job

[-] 1 points by darkhound (66) 12 years ago

Well good for you if you have a job.

For the rest of the fools protesting and looking for a job, remember this "beggars can't be choosers."

To be fair, most of you should have been protesting years ago.

[-] 2 points by equazcion (688) from New York, NY 12 years ago

To be fair, hindsight is 20/20.

To be fair, a good sign of a cynical attitude is waiting until someone does something positive to tell them they aren't doing enough, or should've done it before.

We're protesting now, bitch. If you've got a time machine contact me immediately. Otherwise shut the fuck up.

[-] 1 points by frankchurch1 (839) from Jersey City, NJ 12 years ago

Time machine? We've had crony capitalism, illegal wars for decades.

[-] 1 points by equazcion (688) from New York, NY 12 years ago

Keep crying about what could've been done. Meanwhile, we'll be over here, doing what we can now.
